The WYSIWYG editor on this site does have a few annoyances but you can edit the html if needed. I prefer it over the old BB code editor and I believe most people on this site use it. That is why you struggle so much dealing with it in the BB editor. Your suffering is self imposed.

You can still inject HTML when using the BB Editor.

Do you think this AppleTV "blow everything else away" interface is the result of the "I finally cracked it" eureka moment Steve supposedly had that was disclosed in Isaccson's biography?

I absolutely do. Steve knew that the interface and content were the biggest issues. How to package them in hardware is important, but who doubts that Apple can easily do well at that? Steve was working on the interface magic.

Traditional Content and UI/UX are certainly major issues!

What is different now, is the potential to offer services over and above those expected (HomeKit, HomeServer, etc.).

I wonder if Apple were to offer alternatives to YouTube (MeTube?), FaceBook, etc. where for for a reasonable fee you'd have a user-controlled, stalker-free, ad-free, gated (by the user) access to personal content.

It would need to be drop-dead easy to use and packaged to appeal to the 15-24 demographic.

Apple is in a position to completely redefine "television". With the correct wiring in place, the divide between traditional commercial content and consumer-created content can be closed. Imagine a world where "YouTube" is not a separate service, its capabilities are just part of your television like any other content source. Talk about a direct hit to Google where it hurts! Apple could deliver that to the hands and living rooms of millions of people, if they do it right.

My point was that there's no reason why YouTube needs to remain the dominant consumer-content platform. Today's it's the go-to place for video content. Tomorrow, it doesn't need to be.

    Exactly!

Thanks for the link. Cool pic, but somehow obvious, no? I would be curious to see the same map few thousand years ago, and I would not be surprised to see a similar pattern, at least regarding surviving babies. Since our kids are from February, May and soon December, we somehow had other things to do during Xmas and NYE ;-)

I hear Instagram is the new YouTube. Disney just premiered a new Star Wars clip on Instagram.

We are all ready for a game changer.

The masses already have iPad and iPhone's to play their games.  Personally, I don't see the reason to play the same games in a TV.  And if they start to develop exclusive ATV games, then they will be competing with other consoles.  And that is a very hard market.

Then you don’t understand the difference between a console and a handheld, and your input is irrelevant.

Only against Nintendo, who if I remember right is releasing a few things on iOS soon.

I read their Wiki -- pretty impressive.

But they're kinda' limited in format and video duration.

As @coolfactor pointed out, Apple has all the pieces in place, and they could blow the personal content competition away!

For example, Apple could offer a service where personal content is group-sourced by the user's friends.

I'll amend what I posted earlier:

The content is thee and me ...

Built with a new iMovie ...

Streamed from the Cloud, with FoundationDB ...

Poco Loco -- a little crazee

If Apple could combine the user friendliness of Wii with decent performance and an app store with developers willing to port games over and then develop brand new games, they will have a grand slam on the gaming side.

What Nintendo did was a console for casual gamers, and was a hit for some time.  Then the interest went down quickly and the PS3/XBox took the place as the consoles people were playing frequently.  Compare now the Wii U to PS4 / XBox market share.  I don't think ATV gaming will do good if it tries to do the same Nintendo is doing right now, at least based in Wii U sales numbers.

I agree completely. Hopefully, the unit will be open enough that people will be able to extend its basic usage. Gaming is not a core aspect of an ATV. Would games be developed uniquely for an ATV and not run on an iPad? I don't think so. An app store and better i/o interface and price are far more important. They have to keep the price down to assure sales and they have to open the system up in order to put pressure on traditional content suppliers.

Siri? Fine, but I just don't get talking to the TV. Just keep the price low, get Plex, etc ... on the unit and focus on content. Competing with gaming consoles doesn't seem reasonable to me. It's about content damn it.

The wow factor will be Siri. The TV will be a TV in the sense that the iPhone is a phone. Not really. It's a connected device. A computer. Music player. Newspaper. Etc.

    How's my stock doing Siri?

    Play some light music Siri.

    What's the news today Siri.

Play a friends episode, the one where Ross was annoying Siri.

    Play Clash of clans.

    Open the garage door.

Integration between iTunes video, streaming other video from any source they can, apple music, Siri search, home kit, wolfram, using the games controller.

A lot of what Apple have added to their API set in iOS for the last while has being leading up to this. I'm far more interested than a watch.

I really don't see why they can't compete with consoles. Apple can gets loads of performance from their custom chips and custom language (metal). Which is another API which points to this ATV rather than the iPhone.

I don't know how do you got to that conclusion, but still, here is my point.  iOS games are designed for iPad and iPhones.  So now we have an ATV, that have access to the App Store to access the same games I already have in my iOS device, but to play it in the big screen.  Is there a benefit on doing that?  IMO, no.  People who play iOS games will not sit in front of a TV when they have access to the same game in the palm of their hands.

So now Apple would have to develop games to take the advantage of a large screen TV, and now they will be trying to compete Nintendo, Sony and MS, with devices people already know like the PS4 and XOne.  And that's is not easy, based in what is happening with the Wii U and other consoles that have tried to enter the market.

IMO, if Apple push the ATV as a gaming device, they are making it a competitor to Wii U, PS4 and XOne.  They have the same target, the gamer who sits in front of a large TV playing games for hours, spending in games, online services and accessories.

I wouldn't be surprised if the A8 is actually Dual A8s.

I use to think the same but you have to start counting months from zero - it takes a whole month to get from Jan 1 to Feb 1, though that looks like 2 months. I think the real xmas babies are at the end of September and the New Years babies are early October. Maybe all the love happens at the beginning of the holiday season, before the stress of it all kicks in :)

    I have "reasonalble" expectations...

I am looking forward to a "app random access" remote that allows swiping like an iPhone. NO more scrolling through lines of square icons. Set favorites/reorder icons easily/have folders, etc.

Easily search a "channel." Use the remote as a game controller (and/or your own iPhones/iPads/iPod Touches). For a free/cheap download - (help developers) scale up your favorite iPhone/iPad games (with the future feature of connecting with other ATV's for group play).

I'd expect the dual core-A8 ATV to be at least $199 (so that means a minimum of 30% more because that's how Apple rolls = $229). Have a $299 version that includes an Airport Express-like functionality. Perhaps keep selling the $69 version with a limited system upgrade that can access the ATV-Store but not use the remotes, etc.
