product. Don't settle for crap. Sound is so fundamental to the quality of a TV, movie watching experience everyone should get it. Crap sound shouldn't be an option. Yes, I feel strongly about this.
Yet, you've complained about the speaker quality of iMacs on these boards forever. A product that Jobs created.
Sorry, Ireland, but that sounds a tad facile and hypocritical.
The masses already have iPad and iPhone's to play their games. Personally, I don't see the reason to play the same games in a TV. And if they start to develop exclusive ATV games, then they will be competing with other consoles. And that is a very hard market.
And yet AirPlay is a big thing and big part of the ATV, meaning people AirPlay *from* iPads and iPhones instead of watching video on those devices directly. Allowing people to play games on the large screen, I think is a great thing and I don't think I'm the only one. I love playing games on my iOS devices, but to be honest, some of the games are much better with a controller, yet playing with a controller on your iPad or iPhone just seems like, "why not on the television if I'm holding the controller in my hands?"
They don't need to compete directly with dedicated games consoles, they just need to open the app store and allow games on the device, then what happens will happen, just as it did with iOS originally. It doesn't need to be targeted as a games device, iOS isn't a games platform and yet look what it has become.
Play a game on your iPhone, then move to your iPad or your AppleTV when you're at home, same game, there is a lot of appeal in that I think. What will be interesting is whether we'll be forced to buy the ATV version of a game, whether that is an ATV "extension" or "universal" version of the app - some of us have invested quite a lot into iOS games already, if that can be leveraged properly, these devices will already contain so much value for gamers that a dedicated console could only dream of.
I really don't see why they can't compete with consoles. Apple can gets loads of performance from their custom chips and custom language (metal). Which is another API which points to this ATV rather than the iPhone.
The IPhone 6 GPU is good for 77 GFLOPs according to Anandtech. The PS4 GPU does 1.84 TFLOPS, also according to Anandtech.
I hope this new ?TV will allow me to stream from my iPhone, iPad or Mac with out the need of wifi. I always have it connected to wifi, but there are times where I could use a Bluetooth streaming option

Here is my question, how better is going to be an iOS game played in a large TV when it was developed and designed for a mobile device? You mention playing with a controller, so now we are in gaming console territory. Game consoles require controllers and sit in front of large TV as part of their experience. I'm not seeing that with the current iOS games, since they were developed to be played in handheld devices.

What you posted is very similar with what Nintendo tried with the Wii U and the Gamepad Controller, and still not go the interest of the public. Maybe you see the benefit of playing iOS games in both, mobile devices and large TV's, but based in the results Nintendo had with the Wii U, I don't see it as a strong point for the ATV. And I personally think it's sad that something as innovative as the Gamepad Controller didn't succeed.

MS already has a "Universal platform" with Windows 10 and the XOne. Plus they have the option to stream XOne games to W10 mobile devices and even play with the XOne controller. Add to that XBox Live, where there is nothing similar for iOS. Looks like W10 / XOne is already ahead of Apple in gaming. Right now, Apple is the one who is dreaming of the MS gaming platform. Let's see how Apple do in the next years.

iOS is a gaming platform. Haven't you see how Apple is pushing Metal for game development?

You keep going on and on about "iOS games on TV"
You're right... that wouldn't make much sense at all. iOS games, as of now, are mostly touch-only.
So imagine if Apple made guidelines for building additional AppleTV games that used a controller. Apple does know a thing or two about APIs and such... they already have an App Store for distribution... and there is MFI certification for controllers too... etc. All the pieces are there.
Amazon FireTV has a game controller... and who the hell are they?
It's Apple who is known for gaming. Up until now it's been on phones and tablets... but there's no reason they couldn't do it in the living room. Apple has a box in there already.
I was just responding to a post about ATV and iOS games. What do you want me to post about?

That was part of my post. Now you are talking about making the ATV a game console, and now it will be competing with the Wii U, PS4 and XOne, who already have a strong presence in the market for years.

No, they still not have the box. Looks like they will have it in the ATV, and like you mentioned, they can go to the living room, but it will be in another league competing in gaming with Nintendo, Sony and MS. I'm not saying that the ATV will fail or not, nobody knows. I just posted an opinion about ATV and gaming. Let's see how it goes on September 9th when all details are released.

Apple offers a bazillion games for iPhone/Pad/Touch. They and the developers clearly get the game business.
Ninento sold millions upon millions of the original Wii. It was not the best performer in any sense, but it opened gaming consoles to a huge market, from toddlers to seniors, who would have no desire to use complicated PS3 or XBox systems or play games with huge learning curves. If Apple could combine the user friendliness of Wii with decent performance and an app store with developers willing to port games over and then develop brand new games, they will have a grand slam on the gaming side.
If the PS3 is complicated, then the current AppleTV is a nightmare

Why can't the AppleTV become a game console?
Apple has proven itself with games on iPhones, iPads and iPod Touches. Adding games to a TV box wouldn't really be much of a stretch.
I wouldn't say Apple's solution would be competing directly with Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo. This new AppleTV might only cost $150. None of the other consoles are available that cheap. That's one difference.
Plus I don't think AppleTV games would cost $40-$60 either. That's another difference.
It would be a different type of game console... so it's really tough to compare it to XB, PS and WiiU anyway.
And yes... let's wait and see. I am in support of Apple adding gaming to the next AppleTV though. It's got my vote!

Apple is the one dreaming? Now you've really lost me. I'm not going to play this "MS is better" or "games consoles are for real gamers" crap, those little battles are so silly and meaningless that's not what I'm talking about.
The beauty of all of this is that to open the Apple TV to gaming and that potential (either as direct competition or complementary to the games consoles market, it matters not to me) Apple need do nothing except open the App Store - all the rest of the pieces are already there (as Michael Scrip pointed out in his post above), gaming is simply one of the types of apps this device will support by default. Given the sheer numbers of iOS devices and users it's not difficult to imagine the offerings in gaming that could appear from developers, and that is exciting to me as someone who enjoys iOS gaming and recently sold his PS3 (as it was gathering dust the past year).
One thing that this article brings to mind (and I've said this before from time to time) is; I think the purchase of PA Semi is the greatest corporate purchase Apple ever made. Even better than SoundJam.

Thank you!
Man! They are way ahead of me
I'm hoping they figured something out here, my two features I hope is included:
-being able to use my headphones connected to my iPhone as the speaker output while watching on TV
-able to see who's calling on screen, while phone charges in other room.

Well I would much rather use other metrics like GTexel/s a second and such, but those metrics aren't available for the SXT6 GPU's.

I use the tuner with an HD digital antenna for local TV. Better quality and cheaper than the HD upgrade with Comcast. For the little TV we watch.
