I've been on the phone with Apple for 2 1/2 hours. They finally admitted that tonight when pre ordering starts you will NOT be able to purchase or reserve an iPhone IF you plan on using apples new upgrade program where you get a new iPhone every year paying monthly payments. You WILL however be able to make a reservation to come in and "talk about it" while they run your credit check there on the spot.
Thank you for the information. I was planning on going the Apple iPhone Upgrade route, because it makes all the sense for me. So based on what you are saying, the pre-ordering is not for new Apple Upgrade route. The reservation they will provide does not guarantee me the new phone - I think that sucks. I have no issue going to the store to "talk about it" and them doing the credit check, as long as they have that phone for me when the credit check is approved.
I'm wondering about the Apple Upgrade Program, you get AppleCare, the cost works out about the same, Then add in the AppleCare.. But it says make a reservation, it seems like its not an ordering option, you either wind up selecting Full Price, or your carrier's payment plan for the carrier you are currently on.
So it seems like you can reserve a phone, which raises into question, can you get it on launch day if you wanted to use the Apple upgrade program?
There are always a few details that never get enough clarity or details it seems when they role these things out..
That's correct. Read my post right above yours. I detail this faux pas on Apples part. What a mess! It's a great plan and happily I would give the money to them so a year from now I'd get a new one rather than fight with ATT over anything else.
I was shocked to see the difference in LTE speed using Oolkla Speedtest and several others available online. I had 5 Verizon iPhone and 2 sprint iPhone users all run the LTE test at the same time I ran mine on att. Verizon came back 1.7mbps on the nose four different times. Sprint faired a little better 2.9mbps on 4 attempts but ATT I got between 47-54mbps on 8 attempts. What a difference. I was in Las Vegas over the weekend and ran the same test with 6 complete strangers - 4 Verizon 2 sprint. Exactly the same result for them. But this time mine was a whopping 88mbps in Vegas. Holy crap. I'm sticking with ATT obviously despite their "buy it from us" BS. I'll just use Apple upgrade plan instead

Just click the reservation button then ignore it and go stand in line. They said the reservation holds your place in line but coming to the store will endure you get your phone without making another reservation. That's what management was told. At 12:01 still click the reservation button (it wont appear till then) then on the 24th get in line as usual and they guarantee you leave with your phone on their plan
Would be nice if the iOS Apple Store app would remember which phone you want too so it was already in your "bag" when you go in at midnight
Indeed. It's very strange how - given that Apple came up with the little Hearts to favourite items since the AppleWatch this is not available for the iphone! V odd.
Its a tough one, Im in MN, and when traveling to some areas, Coverage with AT&T can be spotty, where my wife's Verizon phone will still have coverage.. There has to be some places where the performance is close. I just wish they'd all collaborate on the network and all get rid of crappy coverage and provide good performance..
I would like to use the Upgrade program, as I think it provides Carrier independence to some degree, its easier to pay off a Next Plan. not sure about Verizon's payment plans...
Guess we'll all find out in a few hours..

Thanks! I will do so tonight and make sure my son has the App and do the same. I am not about to give ATT my money any more (at least for the phone) I do wished the I can do both the transaction from one phone.
I also plan to outright purchase the phone tonight. When I enter my carrier (AT&T), on ONLY get options for the AT&T Next plans; there is no option to purchase the phone outright and keep the existing plan.
I tried changing carriers, but no luck. I HAVE to choose Sprint or Verizon Wireless if I do that.
So how do I preorder when I plan to pay the full amount of the phone, and do not want to change my AT&T plan?
Clarification: the above is in the context of the iPhone version of the Apple Store app. The web site offers more options, but is always dead until it's too late when the gate opens on preorders.
The "Remember Me" function seems to accept, by default, ONLY the phone number of the actual handset you're using to pre-order. In other words, even though I was trying to order an upgrade for my wife (say, #2345) with my phone say, #1234), it would not accept it! It would only let me upgrade #1234 (i.e., mine).
This, despite the fact that my wife's (and my kids') phone is part of family plan, a plan with my name, credit card, and SS# attached to it.
Very annoying. Did anyone else run into this issue?
I'll try with my iPad when I get home and see if I am able to get it to do a "Remember Me" for both. Or else, I'll have to order hers only by using her phone. Notifications have to be turned on, on top of that. Not a great solution, if you're trying to surprise someone!
I noticed that last night as well. It will only save the current device you are using. I haven't tried the iPad route yet. If I can save my info from my other line, I'll do it that way. If not, I'll just preorder the phone directly from my carrier.
@Ravormaid- Thanks for the information. I believe it should help a lot of people including myself. One thought, even though people wanting Apple's lease plan will have to wait longer to pre-order, aren't they ordering from a different pool of phones? What I mean is those phones are unlocked phones which are not on pre-order sale at 9/12 midnight PST.

"Remember Me" doesn't work on the ipad. It only shows up on the iPhone.

The bad news is: I just got off the phone with Apple. The Apple financing program won't be available until Sept 26.
The good newses are:
I can charge my purchases on ApplePay Discover and get an additional 10% discount.
I don't have to get up at midnight to play return/reload roulette!
"Remember Me" doesn't work on the ipad. It only shows up on the iPhone.
Meh. Suspected as much. Typical Apple. Come up with something that, on the face of it, comes across as really useful, but there ara a lot of little devils in the details.
Much as I wanted to pre-order, I am going to skip the 3.01AM routine on this one. I'll wait a couple of weeks.
Btw, don't bother with calling 1-800-MY-APPLE, the number listed on the pre-order web page. I did, and they're totally clueless on this. I got passed around to three people, not one of whom even knew that there was a 'Remember Me' function!
If I am already enrolled in the AT&T NEXT program, and had my phone since last year, how do I upgrade and enroll in the new Apple upgrade program? Thanks.

Did you confirm this with Discover? I emailed them, but have not heard back. The news item they put out specifically said "10% on IN-STORE purchases with ApplePay."
Are you planning to use ApplePay when you order via iOS or the online store?

I called them, too. I concur with your assessment.

My biggest quandary is selecting color.
I wish I could see the Rose Gold color in person. In the pics and videos it looks nice.
I was set on Space Gray (my last two generations of phone being Gold) but now am not sure.
I waffle back and forth.
Rose Gold looks pink to me.

i just want to buy a sim-free version to use on either my work number at&t and home number t-mobile, why don't they offer a sim-free unlocked choice?
If you used the Apple SIM on an AT&T network, they lock it so that you cannot use it on any other network. Have to have two sims if you use AT&T.
(Yes, AT&T should be gut-shot)
