I was in the Apple Store the day it arrived and I would have walked out with a 32GB model, and Pencil (and keyboard) had at least the Pencil been available, but it wasn't so I didn't. In the long run I doubt it impacts Apple''s bottom line and I'm certain the one I was going to buy was bought by someone else that didn't have that necessity.

Nothing I wanted was available, but I placed my order anyway. 128 GB + Pencil + Smart Cover + Case.

If 32GB is sad FOR YOU, then don't buy that model.  Many people are happy with the 32GB model and don't need any more storage. And the especially enjoy the $799 price tag and would not appreciate having to pay $100 more for storage they don't need.

No one's forcing you to buy cases.

There are a ton of 3rd party cases/covers that will come out if you are the cheap type.
Those two posts would seem at odds with each other. In both instances you're saving money if it's something you don't need. But you seem to think one is because "you're the cheap type" while the other isn't?

I've always tended to overbuy when it comes to a new toy and accessories. I nearly always find I didn't need them all in the first place. I'd guess all retailers recognize the propensity to buy some added shiny stuff you think you need when buying a new "thing" whether it's an iPad, a mixer or a car.

    Which is why I asked.

Nobody is going to buy the smart case without the Smart Cover. There is a large gap in the case where the cover magnetically attaches. With the iPad Air 2 this was one piece for $79. With the iPP it's two pieces for $60 more and with the mini 4 it's $19 more. I'm sorry but that's ridiculous. You can't tell me the iPP smart case is worth $60 more than the iPad 2 smart case. Even if Apple wanted to promote mix and match between cover and case they could have kept it one product and just had you select color choices during checkout. It's obvious they changed the design so they could increase the price and make it easier to upsell you to the keyboard. The keyboard at $169 doesn't look so bad next to the $139 cover. But if the cover was say, only $99 that keyboard would look a lot more expensive.

Good luck getting Apple to admit it.  The defenders will probably talk about Apple's superior design and quality justifying the price increase.

"It cost money to cut the front cover off the full case and then sew a magnet onto the hinge area.  And we have to cut it exactly the right way."

"It cost money to have basically twice the packaging."

By the way, the McDonald's Secret Sauce is thousand island dressing.

32GB iPP appears to be in ample supply while the 128GB is mostly sold out. Again this is all an upsell technique. Whatever Phil Schiller can do to get customers spending more which increases ASPs and margins (obviously the more expensive items have higher margins). I wouldn't be surprised if next years iPhone models are 16 > 64 > 256.

It's a great tablet, even without the pen or smart keyboard. (I tried those at an Apple store on Wed---nice products, but not essential.) I'll be using it for music with ForScore, but it's also great for web browsing, email, movies, magazine apps. I read our local paper online, which uses the Olive newspaper app, this morning. It's kind of kludgy on a normal size iPad but works great on the Pro.

Yes, reading newspapers and magazines will be fun again with this thing. And no, no smaller tablet give the same experience.

    1) So other companies don't want you to buy their more expensive offerings?

    2) Why is this some sort of scam in your mind? I don't need cellular or more than 32GB but you're suggesting that I would be forced to buy the more expensive model because…?

Why would that be a bad thing? Some people need more space and some people need hardly any space for local data. The people I know that always get the maximum capacity always say they wish they had more, and it's usually because their entire music library won't fit, but you're pooh-poohing a system where you get 256GB for $100 more than the 64GB option, instead of just 128GB? Why?

When considering how the iPP was marketed and its distinct usefulness with regards to the Pencil I would NOT consider the Pencil as just another accessory. It's vitally important. And it's a natural feeling for customers to be disappointed to have to wait for what seems like an unplanned (read above posts as evidence that this was not a planned) delay.

Isn't it safe to say that Apple leadership is also NOT happy about the Pencil delay? How unhappy are they? Do you really think Apple leadership is just saying, "Ahhh no problem, customers just need be less impatient." I didn't think so.

Glad that you support Apple so much but would be better if not so much an apologist.

I got my iPad pro last night and I wanted to load it with my iPad Air 2 backup but I entered the circle of update hell. iPad pro needs iTunes 13.2.1 but my MacPro (2006) which is running OS X 10.7.5 does not run iTunes 13.2.1 which requires OS X 10.8.5. That is a big screwup by some stupid software design engineer.

Backing up and Restoring is just pushing data back and forth. Why would that require another OS version than my MacPro and another iTunes version? Speaking as a 47 year career system software engineer this screwup is amateurish.

So I am now doing a restore from my iPad Air 2 iCloud backup. That means apps will take a long time to restore and all passwords are lost. That is disappointing.

I am also afraid this iPad pro might be too big (my wife says she will take it) for everyday non-table use. I will give it a try for the two weeks.

Why? All their new devices connect to the latest version of iTunes and they list those requirements on their site.

iCloud backups do save your password keychain.

I was not aware of that iTunes version requirement.

I was not aware of that iTunes version requirement.

    On their Tech Specs page.

Syncing with iTunes on a Mac or PC requires:

Mac: OS X v10.8.5 or later
    PC: Windows 7 or later
    iTunes 12.3 or later

To be fair, the Apple lightning connector that comes with idevices are pretty darn cheap and break easily more so than third party ones.

That's right, I forgot. You're always right and everyone is always wrong. Silly me. How's that $150 Apple stock coming along?

Some more supply of 128GB units seems to have arrived in scattered stores on the West Coast. I think that will be the situation with accessories, as well.

I'm not pooh-poohing more storage, I'm pooh-poohing the upsell. Why did Apple replace 32 with 64 but not 16 with 32? One word: upsell. That's why the iPP Smart Cover is priced the way it is. It's expensive enough that it makes the keyboard not look so expensive and thus Apple will probably get people to spend the additional $30 and get the keyboard rather than questioning why is the damn smart cover $139 to begin with? I swear Phil Schiller dreams about how he can get someone to spend more money.

So product tiers are wrong. Apple should so just be 128 GB model for a high entry price. Brilliant¡

Apple employees are trying to get customers for Apple products. Crazy¡
