You can't force a company to do something that is actually impossible so just make it impossible and then they can just slither back under their rocks and be annoyed.

If Richard Burr and Dianne Feinstein are your Senators, time to reach out to their office and apply pressure -- politely and respectfully. Tell them you are against the proposed bill.

Why does this forum software only allow 100 characters in the title? In the early days, programmers used to restrict the character count to optimize speed due to limited disk space and memory, but now days there is virtually no penalty whatsoever for using the the full varchar size of 255 characters. Remember Y2K? That is what happens when you are too stingy with data field length. Hell some of the posts in this forum are thousands of characters long and they are trying to save 155 characters? Give me a break.

So fines for asserting constitutional rights of due process such as the right of appeal to court rulings?

Thats got no chance in hell passing Constitutional scrutiny. And the tech companies (I. e. Apple) have the pockets to ram that right up to the Supreme Court.
The Court doesn't care about the Constitution any longer. Alito and Thomas do, the rest just do whatever they want.

The solution is simple for Apple.  Apple could develop an in house iOS that will decrypt.  IOW, Apple will put protecting customer data on its shoulder.

You didn't bother to read my earlier comment.  This in-house iOS will be demanded to be inserted into evidence, just like any forensic tool, and inspected (source code) by a defense attorney's experts.  How long after a few court cases will there be copies in the wild?  Apple knows what it's talking about when they say it'll get out.

So let me get this right congress is trying to propose a bill that would deny a company it's constitutional right to due process? And how would this not get struck down in the courts as unconstitutional. All citizens and corporations are guaranteed fair trials and all possible appeals.

Highly unlikely to hold up in Appellate Court or Supreme Court. A complete waste of time for show and business as usual for the morons on both sides of the aisle.

Morons. Apple's not gonna stand in the FBI's way if they wanna decrypt a phone. Apple is a private company and shouldn't be forced to hack its code. Now we know why Apple is hoarding billions.

It's not impossible. Apple said that they would have to create software in order to do this but they don't want to create the software as it would make iOS less secure for everyone.

Is it technically possible to do what the government has ordered?

Yes, it is certainly possible to create an entirely new operating system to undermine our security features as the government wants. But it’s something we believe is too dangerous to do. The only way to guarantee that such a powerful tool isn’t abused and doesn’t fall into the wrong hands is to never create it.

What's to stop the FBI from seizing the tool for "security measures"?

Let me guess, this is another attempt of that weasel Comey. The FBI is a threat to national security. Everyone let Burr and Feinstein and your representative know that we disapprove of this stupid bill.

These are the kinds of events which explain why there's so much anger in America and why Trump is so popular. Congress can't find time to balance a budget, but they can vote to penalize a private company in record time.

Daily, I'm astounished that the people who claim to be our representatives, stanf in front of cameras and microphones and spew stupidity and idiocy. Burr, I expect this from. Feinberg...I'm a bit taken aback. Throw this bag in the bay.

'Yay!' cried the governments of North Korea, China, and Russia, realising they will soon be able to take whatever is left of American innovation. Samsung execs poured Moët down their throats, realising their troubles will soon be over. The True Believers of communism have once and for all realised they got it right, after all, and Totalitarianism for Dummies has rocketed to Amazon's top seller position.
