Golden Globes host Ricky Gervais praised the Apple TV+ drama series, but then as Tim Cook watched, accused Apple of running sweatshops. "The Morning Show" won none of its three nominated awards.

Apple CEO Tim Cook was among the Hollywood stars attending the 77th Golden Globes presentation last night, as Apple TV+ drama "The Morning Show" had been nominated for three awards. The series won none, but Apple was also the target of considerable criticism from host Ricky Gervais about allegations that Apple uses sweatshops.

Gervais began by praising "The Morning Show," and got applause from the audience, but then in mid-sentence changed to an accusation as Tim Cook watched.

"Apple rolled into the TV game with a superb drama about the importance of dignity and doing the right thing," he said, "made by a company that runs sweatshops in China."

Gervais is known for making controversial statements when presenting awards but then tried to bring in more technology firms and simultaneously turn the heat onto all of the celebrities present.

"So you [the celebrities] say you're woke, but the companies you work for, unbelievable," he continued. "Apple, Amazon, Disney, if ISIS started a streaming service, you'd call your agent, right?"

That did sound as if he meant Apple and the other firms would call their agents, but Gervais's final points on the issue were unambiguously focused on Hollywood stars.

"If you do win an award tonight, don't use it as a platform to make a political speech," he said. "You're not in a position to lecture the public about anything."

"You know nothing about the real world," he continued. "Most of you spent less time in school than Greta Thunberg. So if you win, come up, accept your little award, thank your agent and your God, and f*** off."

"The Morning Show" had been nominated for best television drama series, but the award went to HBO's "Succession" instead. Both Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon were nominated as best actress in a television drama series, but that award went to Olivia Colman for "The Crown."

A full list of all the winners and nominees is on the official Golden Globes site.

The Golden Globes are awarded by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, an organization representing all of the journalists that cover US entertainment news for other countries. It's seen as precursor to other ceremonies such as the Emmys.

"The Morning Show" has also been nominated for two awards from the Screen Actors Guild. Those results will be announced at a ceremony on January 19.

He roasted everyone. Standard cringe-worthy Gervais fare. I am not a fan, but Cook should have known what he was walking into.

    Welcome to Hollywood, Tim!

Ricky Gervais is showing his ignorance.

In other news, let see a show of hands for the most ridiculous use of a word in the English language.   “Woke.”   What an unimaginative and poorly thought up way of expressing oneself.

His ignorance? I'd say he was blisteringly accurate.  No one wants to hear from celebrities about their political stances and their "brave" performances.  The bit about Apple was a really pointed, tough joke.  Everyone knows that Apple products are made in what we would call "sweatshops" in China. How is it "ignorant" to point this out?  Not funny, perhaps.  But it's certainly not ignorant.

Does anyone watch these award shows anyway? It’s usually a bunch of fake & shallow hypocritical actors kissing each other’s behinds. To have the host insult them is ironic. And to have him make comments about Apple that aren’t accurate is harmful and slanderous. Hey, you could argue EVERY product made in China is made in a sweatshop - none of those workers are paid fair wages, in which case all companies that manufacture in China are guilty. At least Apple attempts to bring better working conditions and more environmentally friendly processes - I would say they are way ahead of Microsoft, Dell, and all the other tech/consumer products companies in their efforts.

Most of what he said was spot on. However Apple is probably the best player in the business for investigating abuses in its supply chain. Its not like the cheap Chinese android manufacturers care.

Also, should the word be “woken”? The looks on the faces of some of the celebrities was pretty telling.

Getting nominated three times in first year of production is a big win. Netflix, Irishman ouch, is probably hurting more than Apple this morning. I didn't realize Tim Cook actually attended. Guess it shows Apple is all in.

Mr Gervais was telling the truth of the matter. Good comedy usually comes with a bite. He also is a known quantity, so no thin skinned people should have shown up. As to the audience reading this, many of your clothes and shoes are likely made by child labor under some pretty hideous conditions.

Not a fan of “woke” either. It is but one fallacy of our time.

his use of "woke" was more mocking the word than trying to apply it intelligently.

The good thing is no one cares what any of these blowhards (Hollywood as a whole) have to say. A good portion of the people who watch probably are more interested in the clothes that the winners.

You could have done a better job of transcribing what he was saying.

    Clearly instead of:

"So you [the celebrities] say you're woke, but the companies you work for, unbelievable," he continued. "Apple, AmazonDisney, if ISIS started a streaming service, you'd call your agent, right?"

    He said:

"So you [the celebrities] say you're woke, but the companies you work for, unbelievable: Apple, AmazonDisney.  If ISIS started a streaming service, you'd call your agent, right?"

Only in Hollywood would "Apple, Amazon, Disney" be used as code for "reprehensible organizations, akin to a terrorist group."  In "middle America" that's shorthand for "companies that deliver products and services we love."

    That was absolutely amazing!

    Here's Gervais's entire monologue:

    1) What ignorance is that?

    2) What is wrong with woke? I can point out countless English words that considerably less sense than your superficial issue of a new coinage.

He didn't say they didn't offer products we love. He very clearly referenced unethical tactics for achieving those heights… and he's not wrong. Comparing to a terroristic organization is hyperbole, which is comedic device.

Win an pretentious award... get put on my “do not watch” list.

So, really you “win” by not winning.

Gervais is another in a long line of insult comedians. It’s nothing new really, but he does it so well and with total glee.

Cook is a big lad and he understands that this is the price of success.  The other companies who're using the same sweatshops (without Apple's attempts to keep them in check)  can cough quietly and shuffle their feet.

When Apple isn't a target for this sort of thing is when I start to worry.

Ever hear of ‘Public Relations’? Or understand what it is they do and how they do it? Yo do know there is a room full of incredibly intelligent psychologists, lawyers, media spinners and behaviouralists who get paid a lot of money to sit there and devise strategies to make you believe whatever it is they want... like Apple actually cares or does anything of merit to curtail sweatshops and child labor. Your assertions show they have done an effective job - if you honestly believe Apple is probably ‘the best player’.

Talking about sweatshops, how much do all those Hollywood, etc., production houses actually pay all those people who actually make the movies and TV shows? The "stars" make a lot but what about that long list of people who show up in the credits? I'm sure most are lucky to be paid even minimum wage, probably don't get medical benefits, and won't get paid overtime.
