In my previous post, I failed to mention that I don't think Apple will provide the end user a direct method for selecting between Aqua and Brushed Metal. Apple has shunned themes in OS X, and there's even less control over the UI in OS X than there was in OS 9 (with the Appearance CP). So I think it's safe to assume that it will continue to be Apple's way or the hack way in that regard.
I heard that the new 'X' logo for panther is going to be a pink 'X' with a 'pink panther' face in the middle of it. ;-) Someone seriously needs to make one of those as a gag.

Some user control over the interface wouldn't be hard to implement. Like say pinstripes on or off. Basic background color of windows and so on. We could at least have som more alternatives to graphite.
A new silver look to complement the new PowerMacs would be cool.
There will of course be further refinements of the aqua interface elements like when we went for 10.1 to 10.2. There are also rumors that Phanter will sport some sort of new rendering tech for text (think I saw the rumor on MOSR so dont't count on it though) which would be nice.
Apple will of course have its usual new batch of cool effects with a major new version of the os.
BUT I hope they keep the metal out of the core OS and just use it in applications. A new version of AppleWorks would hopefully have the samme interface as Keynote or a refined aqua.
MOSR isn't a bunch of anything. It's one guy, who may have, at one time, been in the rumor loop. For at least the last two years, however, his sporadic posts have been pure speculation.
If you want to see what different apps look like in metal, there's a pretty slick haxie that will do it for you, called Metallifizer. I've tried it on Mail and some other random programs. It also lets you turn OFF the metal interface on cocoa apps that use it (like Safari). Usually, they end up looking bad either way, since buttons designed for Aqua and Metal have different looks.
It would be nice to see more consistency out of Apple.

Apparently, Ryan Meader has not been involved with MOSR for some time now. There are a few other guys who've been running it for the past two years or so, and they don't seem to have much in the way of contacts.
And apparently, so does Apple. Should we forget the reason why many (many of them non-tech) people think OS X is superior? Because it LOOKS better than Windows, any flavor. I think iChat looks rather shitty, and I think the same about Safari (in its metallized form, which I haven't use since a long while - in aqua, its aqualicious). In any case, this metal which, again, can be had by a small handful of mouseclicks in photoshop, is a mistake. It is obtrusive, bloated, ... things I thought Windows had monopolised.

Don't get me wrong I like Aqua. However your statement ( you must realize ) is subjective. What looks good to one person doesn't to another. I for one would like an option for something else ( even Windows has that ) so I wouldn't have to look at the same thing all the time. If other people didn't feel that way Kaliedoscope with OS 9 wouldn't have been so popular.
I don't really care about applications' individual appearances (such as Safari/QT player, etc.), but it would be a bad thing if the ENTIRE OS went metallic. That would look beyond tacky. The way it is now, letting apps and the surrounding interface have different appearances is refreshing. It should be kept this way.
That apps have a different interace than the OS is retarded and a waste of time. Instead of spending time refining their own non-standard apps' freaking window widgets maybe they could focus on debugging SAMBA, updating AppleWorks, or working on 10.2.5. And they should definitely add a "turn off Metal" somewhere in Prefs.
All too true -- I just don't really care how the app looks and, like you said, do wish some functionality concerns were addressed. would love to see 10.2.5 appear one of these days...
If they take this metal thing a bit further, I'm gonna have to leave Apple. I swear. All metal, except for iTunes and maybe the DVD player remote is, imho, absolute crap. I don't even understand why they slap that obtrusive cheap-ass looking little photoshop effect on all their apps.
No one seemed to mind a metallized UI much when the metal was "Platinum"...

Well, that's probably because that doesn't even hint the appearance of metal. It looks like paper, or cardboard maybe... I never thought of it as metal, and wouldn't even have thought of it if you hadn't said that.
And even then, many people were very happy with the advent of OSX, because it made esthetics into an important part of the OS and platform. (A move, if you will, that has started in the latter half of the nineties / 2000 - especially in hardware: you wouldn't even WANT to compare a cube to a G3 beige desktop).
I just wish that all custom brushed metal appearences would inherit the Jaguar-native brushed look instead of using custom classes. And that Quicktime loses the look, or at least gives me a way to raise the volume above 100% (which you could do by shift-clicking the volume control in QT 3.0, or in inline QT objects)

I did not say I wanted the metal interface in the entire OS.
So you prefer it but don't want it to go in the entire OS?? Ok, I see

Though you're right (jinmac I think), as long as its just a couple of apps, I think I'll be able to hold out.

What's left after metallification of all apps? Have Mail play some frikkin' linkin park song when you receive a message?

Amen, I'm with you!

True. But Platinum is "painted titanium" more or less. Brushed Metal is..well... brushed metal.

That makes no sense. If anything Brushed Metal is painted, as you can remove it at will...
