Hey Flash, looks like Mac OSR didn't want to be "upstaged". I didn't notice them giving any dates, but are saying something like 17" and 19" cinema wide displays and to expect 30" in the not too distant future. Talk about strrrretching the rumors. Still, I hope it's true. Dunno if I'd be able to afford a 30" cinema display though.

Yeah, 30" is really stretching it. Monitors and LCDs get exponentially more expensive as they get larger. It would easily cost 10k if it existed which it doesn't.

Prediction: if the 30" monitor rumor comes to fruition we will suddenly here from Kormac quoting himself froma 1999 post when he predicted it...

    I like

Forbes FYI Magazine--?Are We There Yet??

?Skycar 'pilots' will simply log on to the tracking system via on-board computers, then stick around for any arising emergency tasks such as deploying the craft's parachutes in the event of a catastrophic power failure.

Guess you wouldn't want to doze off.

For what it's worth, a guy I know in the LCD biz says that they predict $100 a square inch by this summer on the large screens.

    Want a 60" screen? 6 grand. August 2003

So, at a 16x10 ratio like the Cinema Display, a 60" diagonal screen will have 900 in^2. Multiply that by your $100/in^2 and you get... ninety thousand dollars.

    $90000

But that's a TV isn't it? Is Apple going to market a TV ?

If so, how would this benefit them?

I think the point is that 30" LCDs do exist.

According to <a href="http://www.macminute.com"; target="_blank">MacMinute</a>, the 15in Studio Display has been discontinued.

Yeah the 15incher is for sure gone.

A 19 inch wide screen would be awesome...I just hope the new powerbook rev will come with a $400 dollar rebate if purchased with a LCD...but I doubt that.

If the 15" goes, it is a bad move on Apples part. They arnt selling now because the price is too high in comparison to the rest of the market. Apple had a competative price when it was released, but its still at the $499 when retail prices for 15" LCD's are aproaching half of that. The 17" will probably not be mmoving down to that $499 price, so Apple losses out on monitor sales. I know that Apple isnt in the Monitor buisness per say, but they are designning systems with the monitor in mind, and most PowerMac buyers would probably buy an Apple LCD if they could afford it along with their tower. Too bad, the only monitors that compete in style are Formac's.

You are right. The 17incher will have to drop in price, my bet is 17 inch 699-799, 19inch 1199-1299. $700 is a lot for the base monitor, but $400 bucks off makes it a steal.

On a slightly different note. I personally think Apple should change the current 17 inch display to the 17 inch display on the 17inch iMac and go to an all widescreen format.

I don't. Web pages are easier to read when they're tall, not wide. I'm sick of these short stubby little screens. I want width AND height.

This is what I want from the new Monitor line:

    - Modern Titanium look

    - Adjustable Arm similar to the iMac: I realize this will be hard to do for the 22/23 inch but they could put 2 arms if neccessary...

    - on the 17 they could make a portrait display mode for web browsing

Dont know if this is important or anyone has mentioned this already, but the UK Apple Education Store has a deal whereby you get a printer and cdrom with any DVD mac for £1.

This ends on Nov 4th. Coincidence? Might be nothing but here's hoping.
