This P900 thread on Esato claims that the P810 has been renamed to P900. The same poster claims there is a clamshell version of the T610 in the works. Harald, do you know anything about these two nuggets?

Clamshell T610 = true. It is the first SE phone with a TFT screen. I believe I told a select few about that There's also a version of that sucker with styling for tha ladeeez.
The P900 is news to me if it's true ... what can you do?
I have no news on any hypothetical devices I'm afraid, although August was the hypothetical date ... and as I have said, I don't think there's much chance bearing in mind definite statements from Q-pa-teen-oh.
Why should we choose a Symbian based smartphone that only runs J2ME apps over a Palm smartphone? (Note that this is not a rhetorical question. I'm interested in serious discussion of pros and cons.)
For me, the most important aspect of a PDA phone / smartphone is mobile web and email. Having used a Palm VIIx (the chunky black plastic one with a built in 8k modem), a Nokia 9210 Communicator and a Sharp Zaurus SL-5500 (with Wi-Fi card), I can say that the best user experience I have had for mobile data was/is the Communicator. Multitasking and full web browsing with Real-Player and Flash. Flawless integration of contacts with fax, SMS and email. I'm a little wary of giving up the keyboard, but it'll be nice not having to carry a brick around in my pocket. Bluetooth and GPRS will also be real good to have. Since Nokia is not going to be bringing out a new Communicator this year, the p800 was the only other device I had considered?and the p810 looks way cooler.
Last fall 2002 and again in spring 2003 I had the opportunity to quickly "test drive" few of the new Nokia communicator prototypes (yes, there was/are several prototype models in development) which is expected to be delivered fall 2003 / winter 2004.
Very nice (future) products! One had keyboard input and large clam-shell like display. The other one had economical touch screen, funny moving "shield" over the display and hand-writing recognition like P800. And both had all of the usual PDA stuff including word processor, etc. And GPRS/EDGE/WCDMA so data connection will be satisfactory. There is a rumor that the final product would have both the keyboard anf touch screen but how this is made possible, I really don't know.
I have no information if these are still in development. And sad to say unfortunately Nokia has been very slow to support their mobile phones in macintosh environment. Hope this will change in the future (isync anyone?).
I hope that Clamshell T610 looks something like this
Looks good. Except that phone makers need to move away from those long skinny antennas that break off so easily. I believe exernal antennas improve reception, so it's ok to keep them. But antennas should be short and stubby, like the antenna on the old Ericsson T39, my Moto T722i, or the upcoming Handspring Treo 600.

I'm really jealous...the Communicator is the only gadget I've ever had my hands on that I loved (almost) as much as my Powerbook. Maybe I'll have to reevaluate that p810 purchase.
Clam-shells are clearly an asian and an american thing. They are still very rare in Europe.
I personally don't like clam-shells because the design makes them too thick and not very elegant and there is no extra benefit from the design other than having the microphone near your mouth and the headphone near your ear as regular telephone. With a bluetooth headset who cares? :-)
External antennas? Well if it has one, it has to be cool as Escher described. Otherwise it is just an annoyance. I really liked the Ericsson T39 model (it was so tiny yet looked masculine!) :-)
I dunno i think prefer flips (with a small display on the cover) to "candy bar" type phones. I think in most cases they look better, the screen and keys are protected, and they are easier to hold while on the phone. I refuse to use a earpiece or head set outside of my home, 1. you look like you are insane and 2. people tend to talk louder and are more disruptive in public. Also I find it a pain to have to keylock my T68i everytime i put it in my pocket.

That's the main reason why I prefer flip-phones. I like to carry my phone in the front or back pocket of my pants, so I can feel the vibrating alarm instead of bothering everyone with stupid polyphonic ringtones. (Ringtones on mobile phones should be illegal in public places!) I'd hate to press keys accidentally every time my keys hit the phone in my pocket.

as far as i'm concerned, this is the only benefit to flip phones.
now, flip phones without external antennae... and tft screens... we may be on to something, there.
just wish it looked more like the bloody Z1010 though.

The design of this phone is absolute perfection imo, so cool

Nice one! It looks even better than I had expected based on the others that have been floating around.
