The ATI Radeon 9600 is a great enhancement to the 15". However, keeping it 1280x854 is pathetic! Come on Apple, you know designers are using this and you could have easily gone for a 15.4" with 1440 resolution. All they did was plop in a new processor and tweaked a little. They could have at least thrown in a new display.

On the French Apple website, on top of the 15" model page (paragraph in bold font), you can see

           &nbsp ;PowerPC G4 Ã* 1,25 GHz, 1 Mo de cache N3

The same page on the US Apple site only states L2 cache. Weird.

OMG what a ripoff. They should have put this in across the line, the production cost is next to nothing and they want $69 for it?

Somewhat underwhelmed by the new 15". But I was rather expecting this to be more of an update to a model that was long overdue rather than a really "new" product launch.

Perhaps now that the entire line has been externally updated, the Powerbook team at Apple can look towards the next generation where they are brought up to speed, internally.

Guess it's time somebody started a new "When the hell will PowerBooks be updated" thread in Future Hardware already! Mods have locked them all. We're already two hours with old PowerBooks. They're old news. Anybody make a permanent thread already damnit!

[Edit]By the way, Dr_Holistic has started a new PowerBook thread. Thank you, bro!

    Shut up.

I am teh WIN! I recal saying that if a good intermediate 15.4" res wasn't available, that then it would be better to stick with the 15.2. Looks like I was right, again. HAHAHA!!!

Knowing Apple and the fact that they give away sand at the beach, that prediction was a given. A 15.4" display would have been dreadful at the current resolution. However, I am sure the one button mouse clickers would be jumping for joy!

I'm a designer who uses the current 15-inch PowerBook and if the resolution got any higher, I'd have to get bifocals.

One other thing to note is the new 15-inch is now one-tenth of an inch thicker and slightly heavier than the Titanium at 5.6 pounds.

so since there's no L3 cache on these new TiBooks, does that mean that the new 1.25 Ghz iMac with it's 167MHz bus and 7200 rpm drive will now outperform the 15" Ti? Do both machines have the same type of g4?

A 7200 RPM HD makes a difference by itself.

yeah, HD speed is a huge thing. i can't belive that Apple continues to use 4200 rpm drives in their laptops as the default configuration. they want us to add $125 to upgrade the drive to a 5400 rpm!

you can buy a 5400 rpm from MCE and install it yourself for that price.

I agree that the 5400 RPM drives are overpriced... they are extremely expensive pro laptops, they should be standard equipment.

I'd be interested to see what the sales are like on the bluetooth mouse vs. bluetooth keyboard. I bet the keyboard FAR outsells the mouse because nobody wants 1-button mice (except Apple apologists who think it's somehow "wrong" to use a 2-button mouse). I really want Apple to get the hint sometime, I'm sure if they made a 2-button mouse I'd want it and I'd certainly buy it.

As far as the L3 cache issue, I'd say look here once they have the new specs up to find a final answer.

It seems to me that this is a hush-hush release: non-essential upgrades such as larger HD (who needs 80Go?), memory to 2 Go (1Go will do just fine), ATI 9600 (just sucking up battery power) BUT then cutting L3 cache and putting in a less powerfull battery, probably to keep it all affordable! Man, that's just like giving cheap candy to kids to make them shut up.

I am not bying this one. Hopefully others will...

Just because you don't personally need 80 GB of hard drive space and 2 GB of RAM doesn't mean those things don't cost any extra or that others don't need them. If you want a 40 GB hard drive and under 1 GB of RAM, and a crappy graphics card, get a 12" PowerBook, or an old TiBook.

I'm glad you're not buying it... it seems as though you don't need it. I bet you could get a TiBook (maybe even a 1 GHz version) for really cheap now.

is there an adapter of some sort for the 12"s for DVI. Just wondering because there definitely isn't a DVI port on it. Does this mean the old 12's can use DVI now....??

The old and new 12" PowerBooks, as well as the iMac, eMac, and iBook, all use miniature monitor connectors in conjunction with a dongle to give you video out. However, only the NEW 12" PowerBook has DVI capability. The port on the old one might look similar, but it's functionally identical to a VGA port (but with the pins closer together). They're not compatible.
