Moving pictures. Moving sound. Moving the industry
Could something finally be breaking?!?!

While this could be hardware related (my wish) but I wouldn't be shocked to find that it's not (as indicated my MacCentral)...

Apple Computer Inc. made it known on Wednesday that they have plans for the upcoming National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) show being held in Las Vegas, Nevada next month. In an invitation sent to select media, including MacCentral, Apple said they would be having a special event on Sunday, April 18, 2004.
"Moving pictures. Moving sound. Moving the industry," says the invitation Apple sent today. "Please join Apple for a special presentation at NAB 2004 to see the latest Apple technology."
Contacted by MacCentral, Apple declined to offer any further details than those provided in the invitation. However, last year, Apple used NAB to unveil Final Cut Pro 4, Shake 3 and introduce DVD Studio Pro 2.

Interesting thought... couple that with this quote:
HP CEO Carly Fiorina said the company considered a number of alternatives before signing on with Apple. "We explored a range of alternatives to deliver a great digital music experience and concluded (that) Apple's iPod music player and iTunes music service were the best by far," Fiorina said in a statement. "By partnering with Apple, we have the opportunity to add value by integrating the world's best digital-music offering into HP's larger digital-entertainment system strategy."
Specifically the bold passage (attributed to Carly Fiorina) and the mind sure can play tricks on ya...

Folks walking around there see nothing unusual about $50k cameras.
But they might get jacked about a new media distribution method ala iTMS... (No, I don't think that a video store is on the way, just that there is some possible overlap of interests and concerns.)

Media distribution is the key!
Apple keeps learning how to set up servers for its hardware products. That is what it has been doing since the QuickTime Trailers page first came on line.
It has slowly (actually quickly) increased capacity so that it should be able to move to media beyond tunes and forge a synergy that is beyond what Napster could do. The only competition would be Sony (due to its hardware and content) and Microsoft (due to its own server capability and its ability to force standards in "security and DRM" on other hardware makers).
Let's hope iTunes can morph to iVideo and have the killer device to sell the service.
Imagine a QuickTime player that can leverage the quality of Pixlet and provide a quality experience for the home or the road.

could it have something to do with that AJA IO box ?
portable video studio thing..... it's a nice box too.
but that's already out of course...
it would be something pro if they're gonna anounce it @ NAB
intersting!

I would not read too much into it. Probably nothing but a rehash of known Apple tech: iPod, iTunes, iPhoto, iTMS, Pixlet, Quicktime.
The more interesting Apple's rumor claims, the duller the show - someone remember "Way beyond the rumor sites"?

Think integration...
...like with more than FCP...like with an AJA/Apple codec...
...io HD may not make it to NAB though.

You should get your nose checked...
I would like to see:
Better integration of the IO with other Apple software, not just FCP (DVDSP, Logic, Shake etc.)
A hardware control surface for FCP.
A cheap HiDef monitor solution (the fabled 30" LCD?)
A price cut for Shake (or Shake 'lite'?)

That's a damn good idea.
What exactly do you mean by a 'hardware control surface' for FCP?

Special event on Sunday? That seems pretty odd.
But how about this:
Apples "pro" machine is the G5 tower. It is ready for an update. Since this is a "pro" event, Apple could easily announce a new G5 tower setup. Now here is the catch, what if it was something like single 2.2, dual 2.5, dual 3.0. The first two (low and mid) would be shipping immediately. The dual 3.0 would ship in 6 weeks. 6 weeks puts it shipping on or around June 1st. The big thing is anouncing the dual 3.0 here and now makes it look like Macs have caught up to PCs in terms of speed (since Intel is only now 400MHz ahead). By "shipping in 6 weeks", it still leaves Apple ample time to get things rolling up into high gear for the 3.0 monsters.
The way I see everything is if Apple doesn't update the G5 in the next two weeks, this is the only real option to get the G5@3.0 by end of September (end of summer, what steve clarified at paris expo). They can't do one update in April (9 months since shipping), and then a second in September (only 5 months later). It just doesn't make sense. So the longer we go with no update, the more likely the above type of scenerio I would bet on.
