Oh dear... Ports on the front of the laptop is a HUGE no no...
edit: Those computers really are very impressive. Disregarding the small array of design flaws and the fact that they are trying to be the 'Apple of the Intel world' with their strangely similar website and computer range, I have actually been very tempted by their products..
Don't worry though. I'm Apple through and through.
One thing wrong with it. I don't think iBooks will ever have 'cinema' or elongated displays. (Maybe ADC'04 will prove me wrong...) But ibooks have always had square displays, and PowerBooks have always been more 'endowed' in that area.
Well, the iMac (jellybean and first generation LCD) went from a square 4:3 display to sporting the wide ones. Things do change.
I'm not much for the whole "well, they haven't been that way, so they can't..." school of thought.
Hell, the iBook used to weight about 7 mounds, had 4MB graphics, no FireWire, 800x600 resolution, etc. Things change, internally and externally. Why can't an iBook sport a wide screen? No good reason that I can think of...
Now, if there's a technical reason (no one makes - or ever will make - a 13-14" widescreen or whatever), then fine. But I remember reading a while back that someone was.
Anyway, my point: if the consumer desktop (iMac) can sport such a "pro" feature as a widescreen, then the optimist in me believes the consumer laptop can too. There would still be enough features to differentiate the two laptop lines: DVI, second-display support, better graphics, higher RAM capacity, FireWire 800, PC card slot, bigger hard drives, SuperDrives, audio line-in, etc.).
I don't consider a widescreen as any sort of luxury pro treat anyway. With the iApps, surfing, viewing movies, managing a Safari, Mail, iChat, etc. set-up, etc. most everyone would probably appreciate those extra horizontal pixels...even if they don't realize it.
hey ps....can you make one like that, but more translucent, like the iMac jelly bean sage or cherry?? could apple make an acrylic type iBook shell...so you can see the insides like the old iMac, yet hard as heck??
rounded front and back edges is also a nice idea as it adds strength, like mentioned before...
nice job as usual...can we get a nice mock up from the front and back with the lid opened??
Wow, this is my first halfway serious attempt at using the 3D stuff in Illustrator CS...it's pretty cool! Not really photorealistic, but fun to mess with and very forgiving!
Very easy to change colors, positions, shading, etc. Fun stuff. I'm definitely going to dig deeper into that feature!

I like the white one quite a bit.
They are awesome (especially the white one). also like the last one from nsousansousa - actually they look very similar.
looks more like bad aleinware or hp knock offs than apples, the one thing you left out was style, flair, good judgement, good tast, and that unique "apple cool" ooops did I say one thing? guess the honesty overwhelmed me.
But no need to be such, smarmy cocksucker about it, either. All the things you direct at the iBooks could probably be said about your post, but I guess that's probably lost in the shuffle.
There's criticism (constructive or otherwise). Then there's kinda being a dick for no good reason. Sorry to see you opted for the latter. It's easy, I understand.
Oops, I guess my honesty overwhelmed me...
As for the other guy mentioned the two are similar (mine and nsousa's), re-read the thread to see how things came about. There's a reason they do.

No need for any
My sketch #2 is still the closest I can get to your concept , Pscates !
I must say that I like the cleanness of your skecthes better than my attempt, although this idea for the ibook is much better looking closed than open. IMHO.
( speaking about the Ibook , not the mockup)
I still see a current Powerbook 12 in mine and I think that's not good.
Also the fat body /slim screen looks a bit odd now.... hmmm.

He's an idiot. Where are his sketches?
I think your designs are a great start. They really mimic the iPod mini design (in a good way.) I don't know where all the ports would go, but I think you are on the right track. Nice work.
Hey Jimzip, I like that one the best!!!! The iBook should be rugged, not thin, but sturdy and able to take the fall....and it looks like a big iPod mini!!! I think that the specs need to be able to get the thing down to $700 at the low-end....no Superdrive, slower graphics, etc.

wow, and a great mock-up to boot.
I think that it could work well as a 10" widescreen maybe. Like a sub-notebook almost.
Great way to breath new life into the iBook line.
I do not condone or approve of such an affront to common decency.

I hope any laptop never goes that slim... PB17" is almost too slim. Even now it's hard to plug power or DVI connector to the PB17".
Very easy to change colors, positions, shading, etc. Fun stuff. I'm definitely going to dig deeper into that feature!
