Way to go pscates and Jimzip!! I liked your iBook designs before - really cool and very un PowerBook-like - pscates, but this with the iPodmini aluminum has GOT to be in the iBook's future....either that or go back to crystal and graphite!
Of course if they do come up with this in a month, it may make my newly bought/used Powerbook look like .... no it will still be sweet.
For the record, mine is still glossy iBook white. The drawings (and animation above) make it look silver/gray, but I don't want the iBook to be confused with the PowerBook. So glossy white outer shell, light matte gray (REALLY light) on the surface around the keyboard and display).
And the end-caps (where the ports and CD slot reside, I imagine being a light gray also. Nothing metallic or "brushed anything" about these. At least mine.
iBook glossy white - and PLASTIC - all the way. Otherwise, get a PowerBook...

Ooops, I see your direction! I do like the plastics, but I've never been a fan of white on anything bigger than an iPod....go graphite!
Maybe the colored aluminum can be the basis for the 10" laptop ... the iBook Mini!
GREAT job pscates!!! Ever since I first saw the iPod mini, I thought that design would transfer well to the iBook and that colors would be re-introduced to the lineup. I'm sure Apple is already working on this...I truly believe it WILL happen, when they roll out the new iBooks! Thanks for your renditions...they are supurb, and it's nice to see a forum where people are using their talents and imagination! Kudos to all the other artists on here too...it makes for fun surfing!
(As a side note...I may have to ask for your advice on mapping an image onto a sphere in Illustrator CS or Photoshop CS...first I have to figure out how to make a sphere. It's for a project I am working on!)
E-mail me directly with any of those mapping questions. I'm still getting the hang of it myself, but I used to be quite the Adobe Dimensions junkie 5 or so years ago, so it's all slowly coming back to me (the 3D features in Illustrator CS seem to pretty much be an improved, streamlined and OS X-native take on Dimensions, rolled right in to Illustrator).
I've really enjoyed messing around with it all the past few days. It's pretty nice for basic things like this, infographics, logos, etc. Just makes me dig - and want to use - Illustrator even more than I already did!
Jimzip, that is a great job. You took my rough, simple doodle and "made it real". And it looks EXACTLY the way I imagined it would. I think these things - fleshed out in such a realistic, natural way - look TOTALLY like something Apple would/could do. Hell, it's just an iPod mini enlarged and widened, so it's not like the shape isn't pleasing to Apple!
They're not falsely/unrealistically skinny or large-screened. They LOOK like iBooks. They just look like cute, simple and eye-catching consumer laptops...which is what the iBook is.
I won't waste space or time in this thread, but e-mail me sometime because I've got about half a gazillion questions to ask you!
Also, if you're interested, I have some other ideas/designs...
Man, that's just so damn cool. I can't quit looking at them! So cool to see something that was bouncing around in your head actually brought to life and looking so real.
What program are you using? Whatever it is, you've obviously got quite a handle on it!
Yay! We have people posting mockups again! I love mockups!
JimZip: Beautiful stuff. Could you indulge me and try out that iBook design with a white or light grey interior that only has the color as an accent (on the trackpad button, for instance)?
Could you make a 14" widescreen version, like pscates' drool-worthy mockup from a while back?
I e-mailed Jimzip and asked if he wanted to do any more fleshed-out 3D renderings of my illustrator stuff. I'd provide him the measurements, materials imagined, etc. I, too, would love to see the white one "brought to life".
Although, I like these better because the other one I drew is basically just an elongated current iBok. This iBook is different enough to be considered a "next generaton" model.
I'd be satisfied just to see Jim do one of the above with a nice, glossy white finish and a light grey keyboard area.
I'd love to see him turn ALL my Illustrator-based mockups into such kick-butt renderings!

I added the speaker grilles, the "iBook '04" label and made different colours for y'all.
Warning, some nostalgia may be felt!
Enjoy!

Hmm, I would say he works already for Apple, simply this is a safe way to leak information about upcoming iBook updates without breaking its NDA

Great job. I love looking at them...
Its really small (9inch TFT screen) and yet the keyboard is still usable. I whipped out textedit and wrote a few paragraphs to test it out.
A new model coming out in a few months even has a DVD-R in it... and its hardly thicker than the original version.
This super mini notebook would really fit the bill for ulta-portability.
The JVC UK website is here: http://www.jvc.co.uk/product.php?id=...id=100035&lid=
Intel® Centrino? mobile technology
Ultra Low Voltage Intel® Pentium® M Processor 1 GHz
Microsoft® Windows XP Professional OS
512MB RAM (max), 40GB hard drive
USB2.0, PC/SD card and WiFi. (also has firewire)
Here is a pic I took with my camera phone (nokia 6600) (yeah, aint the best, but whatever, gives the idea)
The only thing I dont like is the massive screen border around it. Otherwise, its a jewel.
I could REALLY dig two new iBook models:
iBook 13.1 inch widescreen
iBook Mini 10inch widescreen
I'd buy a Mini in a second.
PS The JVC mini thing, with DVD-R and all that, will go for about 2000euro (2400usd)
ZO
where's mine?

sadly the pics died
