i say just take the powerbook g4, drop the keyboard, then flip the screen so it shows on he outside (or make it at least be able to turn outwards)...keep the aluminum...
as trtam says, apple could merely change the hinge on the 12" so that the screen flips so that, when closed, the screen is in the same positon as the screen is currently on a closed powerbook, but, when opened, it swivels so that it comes out on top of the keyboard. thereby keeping the keyboard as is, for when you want to type.
When you open the 'book the screen can stop half way, or it can keep going, do a full 360, and find itself attached to the bottom of the 'book, screen facing out.
The keyboard and touchpad would be disabled when in tablet mode.
Find me the OEM price of a Touch-Screen LCD of the same quality that's in the current PowerBooks (then find out how much thicker it is) - I think most of you would be shocked. They ain't cheap and they are thicker. (last time I checked anyway)
there was a plan to put wireless all over north america in major places for 6 billion. If they did this than you could just have airpport on the the tablet that uses remote desktop over the internet to your G5 in your house. Touch senistive to magnectic pens and fingers for imput. Than all you have is a battery touch screen and airport. This would make it cheaper. One problem, if you don't have a desktop than you are in trouble.

But by that time all our desktops will be thin clients too, running off of .mac2020. So the tablet wouldn't connect to your home CPU because you wouldn't necessarily have your programs on your HD, either.
so I can solve that, all that my tablet idea is, is the mouse and screen cabels replaced with internet. so whatever your desktop uses, send it wirelessly to the tablet
Apple Tablet may be launched this Christmas or possibly as early as September and might cost $800.00 with Verizon as the carrier. I hope this will be another great rally for apple earnings. I will buy one of this for sure. I am a great fan of apple product so started collecting all the information (more than 200 sites) about Apple Tablet(News, Videos, Pics, Pre reviews, Rumors etc.,). Used one? I have. A Toshiba flip-top laptop/tablet. The hinge is too easy to break, the actual use is too clumsy, etc, etc.
I think whoever hits on the One True Great Convertible Hinge will make it a viable product, but it is *not* simple.
