I see on apples site that tiger requiers firewire: what for? surely there are a few non-fw PMs that could use tiger...
What for Panther required built-in USB? And there are older machines (without built-in USB) capable to run Panther. To not say that Panther would breath new life on those.
I think it is nothing more than a line Apple has to draw as to what will be the officially supported machines. Obviously they cannot support anything from the past.
I just ordered the family pack for my 2 Powerbooks, it won't run on my older iMac, :-(. I hope it comes on the release day, like iWork did.
I hope dashboard is localized as well, I think the yellow pages widget would be the only thing I would use, might order a pizza whilst watching a DVD. Mind you, I can guarantee hundreds of different third-party widgets will turn up as soon as this hits the shelves.
I hope that Apple does not make the same mistake with Dashboard that they made with Sherlock: cater to the American market only.
Things like the Yellow Pages widget and the Dictionary/Thesaurus widget should be adapted for each country and they all should properly be localized.
feel free to correct me if i am wrong, but these widgets, just like sherlock channels, are subject to the whims of the online sites/databases they query, right? i mean, the widget can't display info that's not there. sure, they could make a widget that pulls in info from, say, lots of weather services, but i'd wager they don't all play nice with each other (i am thinking of meteorologist, and its constant struggle with wunderground changing its system, where in the end, the developer just gave up, and so did sourceforge). so if the movie widget queries moviefone, and moviefone doesn't collect info on hungarian theaters, um, don't blame apple. and i am sure apple's reply would be "well, if there's a want, someone will make a widget for it."
look at konfabulator. there are some pretty niche widgets over there i would guess, for example, that the connecticut traffic cams are of little interest to a widget user in, say, omaha nebraska, but that didn't stop someone from making it. but by that same token, you wouldn't expect that coennecticut traffic cam widget to show traffics cams from every major u.s. city. sure, someone probably COULD do that, but i would think at that point a.) you've soared past "hobbyist" status and straight into "developer" realm and b.) you should probably just make a full-fledged app and maybe sell it.
There is a lot of cool whiz-bang gadjety shite in Tiger, but the newer iLife apps aren't included? WTF? What exactly are the big selling points?
OK, for 130 bucks I can search my entire hard drive! Wow! Oh wait, I can do that now, even though the thing I'm looking for usually takes a whole 3-5 seconds to pop up.
Well, Dashboard is cool, cuz It sure is expensive to get the weather, stock ticker and yellowpages at yahoo, excite, or 50 other sites. For that money, I hope the calculator won't be as flaky as previous versions.
Safari RSS: well if I cared that much about it, I'd be using another browser by now.
iChat AV: Ok, cool app for people who use it. Nice for corporate types who were actually long-sighted enough to buy Apple.
Automator: If someone is that big of a geek, that they do ultra-repetitive tasks, they either have figured out Apple Script, or they use a pallette to do it; i.e. Photoshop.
QuickTime 7: I'm sure it's a nice upgrade. Will they be able to convince anyone (content providers) to switch from Real and Windows?
.Mac Sync: Nice if you move alot of files around. Yet one more reason to pay for a .Mac membership every year.
Mail: Cool, I can organize my mail into folders, just like I could before! And search?! Stop you're killing me! Ooh... Cool new buttony interface- here's my money!
Don't get me wrong I love Apple, But I when it seems that they're holding back on a "name" upgrade, it makes me a little sarcastic.
(I'm awaiting the agonized replies of "but Tiger goes to eleven"

How do you order the Family Pack--I don't see it as an option, only as a footnote to a non-existant single asterisk? I'm on the Education site, but looks to be the same on the main store page.
OK, for 130 bucks I can search my entire hard drive! Wow! Oh wait, I can do that now, even though the thing I'm looking for usually takes a whole 3-5 seconds to pop up.
No, you can't do that now. Try searching in Panther for files constaining some given string or some metadata element, in a hard drive that has several GB of data. Yeah, not a folder with 10 or 20 or 1000 files. The whole hard drive. And tell us what you do get and how you can organize the results for easy access.

The thing is, as always, the implementation. And this remains to be seen. Besides, Safari has some other very nice features, like preventing kids from visiting certain websites.

If I am not mistaken, there are many people that need to up- and/or down- load images from the web, for sharing or whatever else. This is a very simple example where Automator will make their life much easier.

I am afraid that you missed again the point. Mail now works in cooperation with Spotlight.

You cannot order the Family Pack from the Education store. I was unable to do that for Jaguar, Panther, & Tiger. Go to www.amazon.com pick up the Tiger family pack for $149 after rebates and get 5 licensed copies for $30 a piece. I wish Apple would do an Education Family Pack but I understand why they don't to.
If I am wrong please correct me but I never found a way to do it in the past.
Thanks--it's odd that they reference the Family Pack on the Education site, even stating that it's not valid for a student living on campus and the rest of the family at home, yet don't offer it.
You cannot order the Family Pack from the Education store.
It's on the UK Education store, but with some odd pricing - normal edu have it for £69.33, while higher edu have it for £137.48... No mention about the student living on campus, and rest of family at home, bit either.
still keeping my ear to the ground for a dual 2 GHz G4 upgrade, and a 4x AGP card that's core image compatible (might not even be possible, though).
The 9800 Pro AGP 2X/4X should still be supported by core image - Apple's web site specifically states that core image automatically utilizes the GPU when a programable GPU is detected, and the 9800 pro is programmable -
Quote:
core Image-capable graphics cards include:
ATI Mobility Radeon 9700
ATI Radeon 9600 XT, 9800 XT, X800 XT
nVidia GeForce FX Go 5200
nVidia GeForce FX 5200 Ultra
nVidia GeForce 6800 Ultra DDL, 6800 GT DDL
Notice the "include" - it's my understanding that the listed cards are Apple's current line of BTO video card options, so it's not supprising that Apple wouldn't list retail / other vendors. Of corse, Tiger's not offically out yet, and Apple sometimes makes questionable decisions, so I could be totally wrong on this.

I was somewhat shocked when my 9800 Pro (OEM) wasn't listed, even though I'm pretty certain it is supported.

Did anyone else notice that there is a new wallpaper for Tiger.
There's plenty of new goodies in Tiger like that.

And what happened to having orange and black stripes instead of just black and grays on the Mac OS X page?!
