um... that chart IS jan-march 2005, called Q2 2004-2005 in the us corporate financial calendar.

    the graph is units and revenues, not actual numbers, but only the %change when Q2 2004-2005 (jan-march 2005) is compared to Q1 2004-2005 (oct-dec 2004) and Q2 2004-2005 (jan-march 2005) compared to Q2 2003-2004 (jan-march 2004)

yeah it's pretty confusing. my brain was really drained after both trying to design the graph to look cool AND figure out the q2 financial-year stuff... i am also not in the usa and usa changed it's financial calendar corporate reporting thingy a few years ago... coz i was working at a cisco sales conference in 2002 i think and john chambers was showing some graphs and i was all like wtf mate

anyway if i am mistaken someone will be able to chime in

the april-june 2005 results will be announced in july and called "Q3 2004-2005" or simply "Q3 2005"

I hear a bunch of people talking about how Apple is neglecting the Powermacs in lieu of the iPod but the fact is Apple is a single entity that wholly benefits if any one part of its product line sees success. Thus the better the iPod does the more chance we see Apple move to lower margin product like the Shuffle and Mini.

    Go iPod Go!

the really bizarre thing is actually a weird product divergence happening with apple. where you got iPods, Minis, and iMacs flying out the door (higher unit sales but lower profit margins IIRC) on one end, then some 'middle space' covered by Dell and "corporate IT" (whatever that means), then the Pro line with PowerMac and PowerBook and Xserve on the high end.

my feeling is that Tiger, hi-def, video production, and iLife and whatever else in 2005/2006 will be the testing ground to see how much apple can 'push' people up towards the PowerMac and Xserve side

it is possible though that iPod and Mac Mini and iMacs could become the financial 'engine' of Apple, with PowerMac and Xserve and Pro Apps the kinda niche 'proving ground' or 'brains' of Apple, where the technology from that filters down to the masses. in otherwords, should PowerMac and Xserve hardware start to get more and more niche, it almost becomes a "R&D" division rather than a "commercial hardware" division

i suspect that steve J and apple execs are not going to let the halo effect opportunity slide... even if there is a minor(??) demographic jump from the Mac mini to a higher-profit PowerMac... my feeling is again, we'll only have a clearer picture towards the end of the year.

well, i'm out of ideas... i never went to Biz school and dont work at apple, so i am currently just waiting to see how they pull this off. this is definitely a hot topic at apple, could be the reason why the hardware exec got booted and they hired HP's marketing communication exec. you can bet your ass steve jobs is putting in one extra yoga session per week to gain some cosmic insight into how to pull this off

No they won't since Apple won't announce those numbers anymore. It will be portables and desktops from now on.

yes good point. my sentence should have been steve jobs, execs, and board of directors will be looking at the powermac g5 *financial* numbers.

the rest of the rabble (analysts, punters, shareholders) will just get desktops and portables, no breakdown as you mentioned

It is a beautiful graph, sunilraman. Thanks!

I suppose Apple only needs to update what's really selling... if there's a big inventory of old PMs, and they're moving slowly, now is not the time to make new ones. Instead, maybe we'll see iBook, Mini and Powerbook updates.

1500 for a desktop shipping with 256MB, outdated videocard, no monitor and only an 80GB diskdrive.

Apple needs to do something with the Powermac G5 line. 64bit cpu with minimal RAM and outdated peripherals is just silly.

Yeah keep hoping people will buy those PMs and not introduce a new model for the next 3 years.
