According to ThinkSecret new iBooks priced at $999 and $1299 as well as new Mac minis priced at $499, $599 and $699 are due next week. It's about damn time.
Apple is expected to announce new consumer-oriented products next Tuesday, in time for the for the back-to-school shopping season, according to unconfirmed reports.
Specifically, anonymous sources said to expect new Mac mini models on Tuesday, July 26th. Updated iBook laptop computers may also accompany new Mac minis, according to rumor site Think Secret.
The site added a dab of color to rumors pertaining both offerings, explaining that three new Mac mini and two new iBook part numbers have appeared in Apple's retail database.
The three new Mac mini configurations are priced at $499, $599, and $699, according to the site. Meanwhile new iBook part numbers are showing up at $999 and $1,299 price points.
No further details or specifications of the systems have surfaced. Previous reports from overseas have suggested that Apple's 14-inch iBook would gain a widescreen display around this time.
Earlier this week reliable sources told AppleInsider that Apple was looking to clear out its existing inventory of Mac mini's through retail discounters such as Overstock.com -- a telltale sign that new models are imminent.
I would seriously consider a Mac mini if it had 1.67 Mhz G4. A 5600 rpm HDD and 512RAM and a coregraphics GPU for $599. . A q u a M a c .
I think that's very possible. Definitely at $699 (if rumors are true) but I think some of these things will happen (especially graphics) for all models.

Apple needs absolutely to ship ALL models with Core Image capable GPUs ASAP. I think that by this autumn there will be no Macintosh without such a GPU, even if it is bottom of the line (right now even the eMac has a Radeon 9600).
What would a widescreen 14" screen be in terms of resolution?
1280x768 is what most manufacturers are doing for their 14" wide. note also that this is 720p capable, at least in terms of resolution of HDTV 720p (1280x720)
Has anybody heard whether the PowerBooks will be covered in this update? I am in the stage of buying a new Apple PowerBook, so this would be of interest. Otherwise I'll just wait to find out Tuesday.
i'm really hoping for a new form factor and definitely a new screen and video card. unfortunately its not going to out do the powerbook and unfortunately that thing pretty much sucks now too. not that its bad but the bus speed is atrocious and the video card sucks.
but if for $999 you get:
512mb ram
widescreen
64mb video
1.42mhz/167 bus
bluetooth
i'd probably be pursuaded to buy one because the options are decent. but for a measly graphic or ram bump and/or a few more GB's in the HD, forget it, its still last years technology, imho.
Somehow I think there will be a new 15" or 17" screen tomorrow....match with the Mini. Doesn't it make sense to add a screen with both Firewire and USB hub like the other models? I'd guess in the $399-$459 range.

i think virtually everyone on appleinsider will say that 99.99999% that PowerBooks will not be covered in this update. but with Apple nowadays, who the bloody hell knows. we thought they'd NEVER move to intel... as one poster put it before... it's like finding out your girlfriend is a hooker. nice, but hmmm...
1.67ghz in the mini or ibook WON'T happen, because the powerbook is at 1.67 ghz. Unless Powerbooks are updated with a minor speed bump to 1.8ghz. If it does happen, Powerbook sales will fall.
The mini is built for switchers, to surf the net and listen to music and ?, not for high end professionals.
Powerbooks and mac minis are hardly interchangeable. They have entirely different target users and I don't think many people who want a portable computer would buy a mac mini and carry it, a screen, a keyboard and a mouse around with them...

i think you mean 1.67 Ghz not Mhz
but yeah.... agree with the specs for $599, though make that 1.5 Ghz. $499 will be 1.33 Ghz.
people are sick of me saying this but just for the record again:
$1299
14" widescreen iBook
g4 1.5ghz
512mb ram
5400rpm 60gb hard disk
ati mobility 9600
.............
fuck it. not gonna happen
.............

I think the next Mac mini will come in 1.42 and 1.67 GHz configs.
As for iBook, I think the $1299 model you list is possible (with a few exceptions):
14" widescreen iBook It may remain the same 4:3 ratio display, maybe not
g4 1.5ghz Maybe, if not, then 1.42 GHz (like you can notice the difference)
512mb ram If this is the high-end iBook, I agree
5400rpm 60gb hard disk Not sure about speed, but I think it'll be an 80 GB disk
ati mobility 9600 agree - for all next-rev iBooks
Oh, and the system bus will (finally) increase to 167 MHz.

I'd jump on this.

I don´t really care about the speed of the CPU. Its really not that kind of computer.
