Why couldn't they just make it have BUTTONS? Jesus christ, this is complicated. For example, the MX510's top plate is one piece of plastic, but it seperates around the center buttons. I think Apple could have done something similar. (I'm talking about the piece of plastic that's blue in the below picture)
I don't know, Apple's design seems prone to unintended input and broken parts.
It seems kind of odd. How does a novice user know that they can click left or right? There are no visual cues, and as far as I can tell, no physical ones either.
I can already hear all the calls from parents and grandparents asking what's going on, because when they click they sometimes get a menu and sometimes it acts normally.
That's not to say I dislike it though.
Presumably reading the manual will help these folks out. Also, from the MacWorld review:
Quote:
By default, the scroll-wheel button is set to invoke Dashboard and the two indentations invoke Exposé in ?All Windows? mode. And as I said earlier, the right button is set to Primary Button ? you need to change it to Secondary Button in order for it to perform the equivalent of a Control-Click.
Stopped by both nearby stores today in an effort to find one of these...The first claimed they weren't in and wouldn't be anytime soon (though I suspect by the demeanor of the employees that they actually had them and were holding the limited supply for themselves or friends). The second said they got 8 and sold out immediately, but did have one on display...
Quick REVIEW:
Got to play with it for a few minutes, and walked away impressed, but disappointed. Everything functions well, and the design is pure Apple. It looks and, for the most part, feels fantastic. I had no problem reconciling right and left clicks, though after a long time on a multi-button Microsoft mouse it felt "weird" to feel the entire enclosure move with a right-click.
Scroll response after setting the PREFERENCES was excellent, perfect for web-browsing. The horizontal and vertical scrolls worked perfectly, though the (not really a necessity) diagonal scroll wasn't as easy to pull of on the very small ball.
2 gripes:
1. The side buttons working in unison required too much pressure to invoke Dashboard (as set). There was no preference to set the amount of pressure required, so my first reaction is that this is a carpal tunnel nightmare waiting to happen. You can still pick the mouse up for long drags without accidentally invoking the '4th' button, but that means that actually getting them to engage requires a bit of finger oomph. I'm not saying you need to be Arnold, but I can imagine this growing annoying over time.
2. The size and shape of the mouse and the location of the buttons didn't feel natural for my rather large hands...I felt like I needed to 'scrunch' up my knuckles to get a good enough grip on the side buttons to initiate a click, again leaving me worried that it would be uncomfortable over time. The scroll ball is so small that it doesn't provide much feedback, you can hardly tell your moving it at all. Perhaps this would have been easier if I could've heard the artificial clicks over the loud store...
All in all, I liked it and have already ordered one for experimentation, but I reserve final judgement until I live with it for a few days...
Will it become the default???? thats the question Everyone is really asking right?
"The Mouse Is The Button
On Mighty Mouse, the entire top shell is the actual button. As with previous versions of the Apple mouse, simply press on the upper surface to click ? the body pivots up and down to actuate the clever click mechanism."
"One thing that isn't detailed on Apple's page is what the _default_ system settings will be for this mouse. I'm thinking, though, that the default settings will make it act like an ordinary, one button mouse, making it the same out of the box user experience that exists today. It won't matter what side of the mouse the user clicks on, it will do a "primary" click. They won't even need to know the capability for a right click exists. Then, for those users who want multiple buttons, they can go into the mouse prefs and change it to whatever they want. The current, simple experience will remain the default, but now advanced users can get additional functionality as well, the best of both worlds."
the Question Answered itself in the design, pure and simple for the purists and an imensley intuituve user experience out of the box and advanced functionality optional for advanced users in one mouse.
BTW I darn sure do not see any customers complaining about The WYSIWYG way of doing things in the Macs UI,so idoubt things will get more complicated to suit windows users...... its the reason people love OSX and we can always expect the pro apps to of course break those foundations.
this mouse was a way of giving users options stay home or grow open and switchers less excuses and knowone leaves their mice in the box anymore an is forced to buy somthing else execpt for me who prefers the zen minimalist nature of the current bluetooth pro mouse
I`ll return with a long term forecast and opinion later im still shocked by this all.............
I went out to Apple store to try one out. Obviously they were out of the stock and that's good thing for me. after searching around the store i found one installed on one of the machines and just to summorize how "scroll wheel" feels , i'll just say i'm not selling my Logitech Mx1000.
Mouse feels same way original feels. Sqeez buttons have to be pressed fairly firmly to be activated , i didnt like that. I did like that right button that wasnt. Really cool. So far i thought i'd be buying one ASAP. Then i fired up safari and started "scrolling". Oh my , does that blow. Ball is way too small. After 2-3 minutes scrolling around i was already getting cramps in my wrist. I get that with my Logitech only after 1-2 hours of work. Ball is positioned way too low for anyone with longer fingers. Also its way too small as i already said.
Too bad , i was really excited about this. Even though i really like MX1000 from Logitech , i thought i'd finally have ALL apple set up on my desk. I guess not. Confortable scrolling means ALOT to me.
Will it become the default???? thats the question Everyone is really asking right?

Can you adjust the scrolling speed so you don't have to spin the ball as much? Or is it more the position of the ball than its speed?
sweet. as said before - apple woke up! good job...
some thoughts: i am currently using a microsoft (by starck) 3 button + scrollwheel mouse and i am quite pleased. besides i was always staring at the pure elegance of the apple one button mouse.
now i can have this elegance without compromising my behaviour as a computer user. i always used the scrollwheel button for triggering expose all windows, it's so intuitive. the lack of bluetooth isn't an issue for me, because i think it drowns the mouse's battery too quickly. i am currently using a mac mini but when i get my apple laptop in the very near future i am even more happy to connect my mighty mouse at home instead of the current starck mouse.
i don't see a problem with the clicking mechanisms because this mouse just works like the one button version. the only difference, it detects, where you have pressed by its built-in sensors:
"On Mighty Mouse, the entire top shell is the actual button. As with previous versions of the Apple mouse, simply press on the upper surface to click ? the body pivots up and down to actuate the clever click mechanism."
" an you adjust the scrolling speed so you don't have to spin the ball as much? Or is it more the position of the ball than its speed? "
Position really blows for anyone with longer fingers or bigger hands. I'm 6'2" tall and my hands are little bigger than average i guess.
I dont know about adjusting scrolling speed. As i said , in typical Apple fasion , there was just one mouse to try out for the whole store and there was line forming behind me to try out the mouse. Reps said they were sent out few mouses and they were gone within an hour of opening.
I'm really looking forward to more reviews from people who ordered it without trying it. So far i've read few but those remind me " OMG it's apple it's gotta be god send " type of attitude without even thinking about it.
{rant] I agree that Apple should keep enforcing the single button idea though. Because for UI reasons as many of you have stated. And in fact, i'm kind of shocked that some of you said you wanted Apple to go the 2 or multi-button route on their UI..
I mean yes, developers will always use multi-button mice. Heck, I use one, but Apple has always been light years ahead in innovative development. Don't you think Steve Jobs would have switched over years ago if he didn't have a good reason not to?
The idea of only meeting popular demand is, in my honest oppinion, a dumb choice. Why? Because the general public is stupid and in most cases with computers, don't really know what the heck they want. People could want to use an xbox gamepad to type with an on-screen keyboard. But that doesn't mean it's the best solution. It looks stupid now, but such an idea before the qwerty keyboard system would have been genius. it's all about what Apple does best. Creating the standards of tomorrow.
Apple has so far done many similar things with their OS and hardware that was at first criticized, but then later praised for the genius in it.
Sure, there have been exceptions, but for the most part, Apple is in the lead, and I'll trust them over the general masses anyday. [/rant]
On another note though, can someone please explain why bluetooth mice/keyboards are such a necessity? Don't most all mice and keyboards sit just a few inches from the screen and maybe a foot or 2 from the tower? why do we NEED wireless options so badly for things that so rarely are moved away from the computer?
Sure, there are exceptions, but for the majority wired keyboards and mice would be fine. Is everyone really that willing to spend $50.00 to $100.00 extra a year on batteries in exchange for not having a few inches of wire? it seems to me that people just like the "idea" of freedom...

The speaker is a tweeter for iTunes.
It would be cool if it was tactile. Like, shook the mouse a little bit when you scrolled.
because then it could be hacked for forcefeedback in games

Will this mouse become standard with new Macs?
*shrugs*

Is this a Mac thing ? Or just thirst for new product ? Where's the Newton 2005 PDA Micro-Mac of my dreams ?

Wouldn't it depend on who opened the box ?

It would depend on whether the scrollball was clicked - or not.

Mine shipped out. It will be here tomorrow. Good luck!
