[quote]I just get a huge white space in the browser window.

You are not alone. I and many others have started seeing the blank back page. I started getting it back in 0.2.6, IIRC.

I think people are overlooking the possibility of Apple merely bundling more than 1 browser with the OS. I mean, if you look in the "Applications (Mac OS 9) Folder" on a newly installed system, both Netscape and IE are bundled. No reason why Apple couldn't include IE and Chimera (or Omniweb and Chimera for those of wishful thinking). The main reason I think this hasn't happened yet is that both Chimera and Omniweb are still in beta.
The newly added features in 0.2.8 are nice. But 0.2.8 is significantly more unstable than 0.2.7 was, making it impractical as a primary browser. 0.2.7 rarely crashed on my setup (iBook/500/320, 10.1.4). Let's hope that 0.2.9 gets back on the stability wagon.
By the way, it looks like the command-arrow in addition to the command-bracket keyboard commands for back and forward was not implemented after all. I like command-square bracket, but command-arrows works much better for many European keyboard layouts.
I've experienced the blank page upon using the back button as well. All the versions of Chimera I have used also take significantly longer to render pages from cache (if they ever render) than new downloads. That's odd to say the least.
I remain hopeful that Chimera will be the browser to beat by the end of 2002.
So far, the only difference I've noticed is that a few more prefs have been added and it's not quite as crash-prone as 0.2.8.

Thanks for keeping us in the loop, starfleetX. Anything that's more stable than 0.2.8 is better than nothing. Chimera 0.2.7 is downloading the current nightly build as I type this. Of course, without indicating status. 0.2.8 has gone to the trash.
So far, today's "nightly" build (whose night is it anyway) seems much more stable than 0.2.8. On the other hand, the command-[ and -] have been changed back to command-arrow commands. I thought we were going to keep both command-square-bracket and command-arrow! Can I post this feedback to the Chimera mailing list without joining it?
Also, as I am typing this message, the arrow keys allow me to move around in the text I am typing, but the cursor bar does not move. Text, however, is inserted where the arrow keys would have moved the text cursor. It's just that the cursor doesn't follow. I guess the obvious answer, which starfleetX has already pointed out, is that nightly builds are not milestone releases.

Scott F.: Have you tried the most recent build of Chimera? I'm no software guru but if you haven't already, I suggest you try that.
Today's build of Chimera (06/07/02) is very stable for me. It seem's they've dropped the option not to have anti-aliased text. Non-anti-aliased text rendered faster, so I had turned it off. But I guess it's ok with me. We just have to let go of the old text rendering and get used to our fuzzy vision.

I am very happy with 0.3.0, I have been using it most of today and it seems to have fixed several outstanding bugs, there is much interface work to be done and feature implimentation but this is actually more promising than Omniweb in the long term and until this point I had seen Omniweb as becoming THE Mac OS X browser.
As much as I love how great this browser is becoming, I won't use it as my main browser until they get some KEY features in like a download manager. It does look very promising. Until it gets a bit more polished, Mozilla/OmniWeb ( and IE because of Microsoft's shitty windows media plug-in doesn't work with anything else ) are my main browsers. Mozilla 1.0 makes it much harder deciding between OmniWeb and Mozilla. I have 2 week periods of switching between the two. OmniWeb 5.0 also looks great and will most likely be the first browser I actually purchase.
I could swear that Mozilla post 0.98 has gotten less stable... I'm running something similar to Chimera and it used to be rock solid, and now it crashes now and then (almost always while at forums.appleinsider.com!).It's kind of annoying, although after a crash, you have an option to restore all your pages/tabs as they were before the crash, so it's not too bad.
BTW, this is totally off-topic, but SFX: not sure if you know this, but there's a cross-fade plugin for XMMS, and it works like a charm! I was thinking, man it's weird there's no cross fading for XMMS, surely there's a plugin, and well, there's a plugin: http://www.xmms.org/plugins_output.html near the bottom of the page.
It's pretty sophisticated, too, not just a quick & dirty hack.**
Sorry, I know this has nothing to do w/ Chimera, but SFX frequents this thread and my post hardly deserves a new topic.
** edit: For example, let's say your name is stimuli and you listen to hard, nasty, vulgar drum and bass, and you have lots of mp3s culled from sweet DJ mix CDs. The plugin can detect that the Mp3s are 'mixed' together on the original CD, and won't cross-fade those tracks. It will, however, get rid of any trailing/leading split-second silences, so the flow keeps going, and your head need not stop bopping as you are surfing AI.

Just remember, though, that as with the Mozilla nightly builds, these may be more unstable than milestone builds.

I am one of the many users out there that cannot launch Chimera (Navigator) on my machine.
After the splash screen, I get the:
The application Navigator has unexpectedly quit.
The system and other applications have not been affected.
As I look at the Console.log file, I see this:

Seems font rendering has become more screwy, like the letters aren't evenly spaced
And there's still a big lag when typing in text fields.
