Damn shame we dont have sidewalks or even wide sholders on the 4-lane roads and state highway that that 1.5 miles cover...

America is mostly sprawl, which is unfortunate. Most of the country was developed after the automobile, and it's interesting to note that in 1919 (the height of American railroad) our system was the best in the world. The decline was further exacerbated, and really destroyed, by Eisenhower's short-sighted push for a national highway system.

Anyway, it's still not much of an excuse. I don't live in a city and I put on about 5000 miles a year on the car. It's easy enough to plan outings. I also walk to places within a mile or so, and ride the bike to places slightly more distant. The fact that most fat Americans mock me about my non-motorized transit speaks volumes about how the majority really feels.

If there are really that many red lights, there are probably also less-busy roads that you can use. I rarely use the sidewalk, to tell you the truth. I just take sleepy roads, and travel slightly further.

What wonderful insight, Splinemodel. I walk to work all the time. It's only a mile. When I was in college, I walked their every morning. It was a two miles uphill every morning during those two years. I still walk most of the time.

Well, I bet you thought it was never going to happen, but I finally got around to doing the chocolate mousse instructions.

There are three "videos" all with the same content, but in different formats. They are listed here in descending order of picture quality, and CPU power required to play back (i.e., the first one requires most powerful CPU). Right-click the links and download them to your HD before watching.

Any problems with the videos, please let me know.

    1.) 640 x 480 1.5 Mbit/s H.264

    2.) 320 x 240 500 kbit/s H.264

    3.) 320 x 240 800 kbit/s MPEG-4

    Additional notes:

I've put that you need "large" eggs. This is U.K. "large" however, and I'm guessing a U.S. "large" is somewhat bigger.

For U.K. residents, I can heartily recommend Sainsbury's 55% cocoa plain cooking chocolate. Don't use chocolate with lower cocoa content, because it won't work. Higher cocoa content (e.g. 70%) can be used if desired, but in that case I recommend slightly less chocolate per person and that you serve it with whipped double cream (very bitter otherwise). For the Americans (and all other non U.K.ers), I'm sorry, I don't know which chocolate to suggest. If any of you try this out and you like it, perhaps you could let us know which chocolate you used.

Having two people really helps, as egg whites can start to "re-liquify" whilst chocolate is melting; the second person can ensure they stay properly whipped, and can help spoon in the egg whites at the appropriate time.

It is important to stir the egg yolks in as quickly as possible (heat in the chocolate cooks the egg).

The point at which you start to fold* in the egg whites (which should be added a couple of spoons-ful at a time) is critical. Keep stirring the chocolate+egg yolk until it starts to stick to itself, instead of the pyrex. If you take too long to start folding in the egg whites, the mousse will have lumps in it. I don't really know what'll happen if you start folding in the egg whites too soon, but it probably won't be good.

*be patient (especially if making for more than 2 people, the folding can take a while to get going), and make sure you fold, not stir.

    Have fun!

hmmmm...2 spoons...whats that, like a spoon and a half in the American system?

seriously, that looks great! if we ever have an AI meetup, you cook desert; I will do dinner; thick cut sirloin cooked medium with baked potato, grill-fried vegies (fresh squash, peppers, cucumbers mushrooms and so on cooked together atop the flames using a skillet that looks like a strainer) and grilled garlic toast and washed down with (for the grown-ups anyhow) a nice strong red wine or my preferance, a raspberry beer so cold that steam rises when you open the beer...

    Sharing pr0n... holy crap.

It's a cool idea, but I'm a bit nervous at the thought of possibly being the only female there. \

understandable...and honestly, as fun as a meetup sounds, I dont see many being willing to cash in vacation time, and spend money to go to a meetup, hell, I would probably just go to Fla and hang out on the beach for a few days...

BTW, the pr0n crack was a referance to the running joke on Slashdot...any time storage or bandwidth dramaticly increases, someone inevidably makes a joke about how much more porno they can now downloadd and/or archive.

They have a new rollar coaster there now. It is one of the best rides I have ever been on. Incredibly smooth ride too. My friend and I decided that we could have fallen asleep on it. I think it was called "Expedition Everest".
