The current solutions are to return the MM for refund or replacement, or perform some sort cleaning.

What many others do, and what I do, is press down harder on the ball while forcing it to roll, it scrapes on the socket it is inside, repeat as necessary, scrolling side to side and up and down. It seems to clear up the issue for a month or two for me.

If someone does want to argue it, there are threads in Current Hardware where you can easily find one to discuss it.

Looking at the design, it would have been easy for Apple to have put a removal ring around the ball. Then it could have been removed, the inside cleaned up, and put back.

I suppose it would have spoiled the clean looking, undisturbed surface.

If one were thinking of improving on the design without mucking with the clean styling cues, maybe a mini touch-pad would serve better and hopefully eliminate the maintainance issues. Some of that technology is built into the mighty mouse already in the form of capacitive sensing to tell whether the left button has a finger near it.

Personally, I would prefer a somewhat larger scroll ball, maybe 50% to 100% larger on the diameter, as well as an easier way to pop off the shell to get inside, so no release ring is necessary.

You mean like the trackball the original, 100 series, powerbooks had? If so I always liked them. Great feel, much better, IMO, than trackpad which I've never gotten used to.
