It's too bad there is no sli / cross fire. Not only will amd 4x4 let you use that it will use cheaper non sever ram.

Really? I swear as far back as 6 months ago you were saying your goodbyes and pricing a linux system?

The real difference, to get a reasonable comparison, is closer to $300. The Apple price probably still doesn't include a 3 yr waranty (add $250 and it's not on-side like Dell's workstation warranties). I just ran the order form for the 690 with those specs and it came out to $3200. Then there's the Quadro vs. consumer video card.

Still is good deal, but the old RDF is over stating the price difference. The Mac Pro might be more comparable to the Prec 590 than the 690 as well.

You are right BUT still am very impressed with the pricing. I did expect all Quad core but not these prices.

And I swear that's none of your business. People make decisions at one point within a specific set of circumstances, and when those circumstances change, the decision may also change.

Stop being obtuse and leave the guy alone.

That's true. The Apple site has the new products up, cheaper Cinema displays, XServe, Mac Pro, etc, so now we can get a better idea of what is really in these things.

I wasn't harrassing him, I initially said it as a joke and I think anyone who can read knows that. My second comment isn't asking him to explain anything, it was just a regular out loud response, if you talked to another human being you'd hear people make responses like that all the time, it isn't trying to pry, it's just a reply.

Oh and I gotta love the hypocrisy of jumping into someone else's conversation to tell them to mind their own business. Real cool.

    Well, my mockup was close.

Power supply up top. Dual optical drives that aren't slot-loaders.

I got the number of holes between drives wrong by one. heh.

It look like you can have 4 video cards but not in sli and it does not say what speed the slots are at.

I'm looking at the dell configuration screen. Mine comes out to $3822. The second processor add $869 to the base price. I added a second network card and deleted the stock wireless card. Forgot to delete the floppy drive. Still not more than $50 difference.

I don't know what is going on for you, I did it again and still didn't hit $3300. I did forget the keyboard and second NIC on the previous try, but I didn't find where to get rid of the wireless adapter. You did pick an up-model "Essential Plan" plan (adds $408), not the "Economy Plan" (included). That's probably where the difference lies. Apple's support doesn't go as far as even the base plan.

Proper respect to ZachPruckowski for making a good prediction!

I didn't think Apple would do it, but they are selling a 2S 2 GHz Woodcrest for $2100. At that price, Apple's got room to grow the iMac price to $1999. Also looks like the cheap desktop ($1000 to $1600) Mac will not be in Apple's plans for the foreseeable future.

Two dual core Xeon 5100 series. AKA all quads. Pretty frickin' amazing. The Mac Pro is everything the PowerMac G5 should have been. So, any questions on why we went to intel now?

The way I see it, Apple has opened itself up for four possibilities.

    1. Apple once again forgets everyone who is not a professional or casual consumer.

    2. A Core 2 brother to the Mac Pro. Possibly using the same case.

    3. Licensing to PC Makers for Prosumer market.

    4. Second PC-like brand.

The SATA/SAS card is stock. Look at the dirve configuration and choices. If you can figure out how to get rid of it I can select it out.

I dunno how you can add a $1389 ($520 + $869) worth of options to a $2358 computer and get anywhere close to $3200.
