From those who distrust Microsoft, the feeling is that MS's support for HD-DVD is soft; what MS really wants is to prolong the format war until they get their on-line subscription service up and running, then goodbye HD-DVD. The latest xBox seems to support that with its lack of an HD-DVD player built in.

I like to stop by and check the thread from time to time, and each time I wonder how it can be that hmurch is still frantically defending HD-DVD in each post...after 31 pages.
Poor guy...it's kinda cute. He just can't accept that Blu-Ray is kicking the living hell out of HD-DVD right about now. It doesn't matter anyway...one format will win and player prices will come down and we'll be happy as pigs in shit two years from now.
But hmurch took a gamble betting on HD-DVD from the getgo...and by golly, the guy is not quitting!
...At the same time, Home Media Research shows Blu-ray Disc sales to consumers have now topped the 1 million-unit market, with more than 700,000 of those units sold this year. By contrast, Home Media Research pegs cumulative HD DVD sales at 900,000 units, 310,000 of them being sold this year.
Bishop said more than 2 million Blu-ray Discs have been replicated since the format was introduced in late June 2006, and that sales of Blu-ray Discs have accounted for about 70% of high-def disc sales since the first week in January...
Hmm...70% of high-def disc sales...sounds akin to iTunes domination. Couple this with already 600,000 Blu-ray units out in Europe, I won't be the least suprised if the head start that HD DVD has been able to muster in Europe will evaporate even quicker than it did hear in the US.
Also, Murchy, notice that the market percentage in terms of sales here almost mirror what was stated on DVD empire. Food for thought...it appears HDDVD is getting outsold no matter where you look...Home Media Research, Nielson, Amazon, DVD Empire, etc. I think it is time for some to recognize that the fat lady is clearing her throat.

Interesting how you blindly said that, when the momentum is about to shift back towards HD-DVD again. Just look what's in the pipeline.... you guys keep poking on the contents and contents are being delivered along with cheaper HD-DVD players. The official price cut is on the 1st of Aprill, although, HD-A2 can be had for $349 shipped along with 5 free HD-DVD movies from amazon today.

I like to pride myself on "NOT" sounding like everyone else. There are some things you go along the herd with and other thing that you need to branch out and find our own voice. I've always contended that Blu-ray is the sensible choice if the price is affordable and the most studio support is desired. However I've grown a bit tired to Sony bumrushing every new format with their own product. You can say all you want that Blu-ray isn't Sony but it is. Plus nothing has changed...Sony has attempted to lock their format down with excessive DRM. The same kind of actions that killed DAT and MiniDisc. My attitude towards Sony is ambivalence right now. I kind easily find a better product at each level that competes with a Sony product.
In a couple of years we'll sit back and laugh at how you thought a single format will win. There can be no winner here. Sony will continue to dump PS3 everywhere and it'll help momentarily but in a year the players for HD DVD will be under $200 and then even the PS3 won't make much sense unless you're a gamer.
Don't worry about me fellas. I've a strong personality and stubborn as a barnacle. Neither format has enough traction to claim anything really. What did Netflix just say? 1% of their rentals are HD. That's pathetic.

LOL. Come on you don't believe that and I know it. I look now at Amazon and I see Children of Men of in the Top 30, The Matrix Trilogy both doing well for pre-order. The end of this week will bring the price reduction of $100 to the HD DVD players. Next week the A20 ships.
HD DVD is not going anywhere and none of you have brought anything significant to the table beyond hyperbole. Don't look at me. I'm not saying Blu-ray is going to die. I'm saying there will be a stalemate. The burden of proof is on you guy to show me where HD DVD dies and frankly you all have done a poor job.
for those who will dismiss the figures... i include them for your pleasure
PS3 sells 78,000 in 48 hours in France
//The PS3 broke the French Wii record of 75,000 units sold in the first 48 hours, and they also broke the Xbox 360 launch sales which sold 49,000 units.
In the Benelux (for the people who don't know that's The Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg combined), Sony sold 80% of their 54,000 units which were available on the launch day. //

numbers can be manipulated to mean what they want. UNDERSTAND, or at least try to (i know many in here have a hard time getting this concept) taht the ps3 has no manufacturing strains, it can produce as much as it needs. it has been out now for a whle in the U.S.
both the wii and 360 could not sell to meet demand.

what... so you believe that M$ has SOLD all the ten million consoles it has shipped?
if figures mean nothing... then 99% (a meaningless figure) of the posts on this thread mean nothing as well.

Numbers can be manipulated to mean what they want, like that time that Elixir conclusively proved that three is less than two; or that Pi, in fact, is equal to one.

Well, and I'm going to go out on a limb here, but I'm going to guess that SD-DVD had... wait for it... 100% of the SD-DVD marketshare at the time.
Greg, if you'd read the post and the one I was quoting carefully, you'd know what I was asking or what I was attempting to ask. So I'll restate it more precisely: in a previous post someone had listed the percent figures for the HD formats. I was wondering how the real world number of HD format discs sold compared to the number of SD-DVDs sold. So, does anyone have any sales figures?
Washington, D.C. (March 29, 2007) -- DreamWorks CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg says the high-def DVD format between Blu-ray and HD-DVD will not have a winner.
Katzenberg, one of Hollywood's most influential executives, said yesterday at a Bank of America conference that only videophiles will buy the new high-def DVD players, according to Variety magazine.
"Blu-Ray and HD DVD are a niche business," Katzenberg said. "They're not going to become the next platform. "I think for the general consumer, there is not a big enough delta between the standard DVD in terms of where it is today and the next generation."
I agree with him. When I walk through stores and I see good movies for $7 I wonder just how they expect to convince these consumers tha that same movie in HD is worth %300 more.
Given Dreamworks' generally dismal performance at the box office, I don't hold Katzenberg's opinion in high regard. If it weren't for the Shrek franchise, they'd be toast. Prince of Egypt, anyone? This is the same guy who said, "I have a very difficult time getting the Napster world." So I'm supposed to bow to his opinion on tech?
"Mr. Katzenberg, I've watch Pixar films. Steve Jobs is a god of mine. Dreamworks, sir, is no Pixar."

The price will drop. They are making a premium profit while they can, IMHO.
