Sony's model hasn't quite been marketed as well as the kindle.
In fact, Sony blows when it comes to marketing their stuff.
The Kindle has been successful because it is attached to Amazon's store, and because it is connected -for free- to nationwide wireless. No one who bought it cares what it looks like.

Amazon out thought Sony on this one.
While both readers suck. Amazon's service is far better.
But the new Sony device does seem much better, from what I've read, though now, I can't seem to remember WHERE I read it. Maybe on ARs.
The closer my 59th birthay gets, the more I seem to forget.
It's always the same story. Sony is a hardware company. Look at them compared to Microsoft in the video game industry. The PS3 has far superior/reliable hardware but when it comes to software Microsoft wins. It's always the same story.

And I know people bought it for what it could do, but it still is NOT pleasing to look at.
Things like that make me wish that Apple would make their own.

Well, I'll pretend that's a good thing.
