and if you meant your within reach of accessible wifi then just submit all the wifi beacons you see there to: http://www.skyhookwireless.com/howitworks/submit_ap.php

then the skyhooks database will get updated after a week or so and you will be able to locate yourself without the GPS;-)

if you have wifi you don't really need GPS anymore... only if your on the road or on the go and there's wifi beacons around... as long as you have the neighborhood in the cache it will work without having to have a live internet connection...

I was ready to do soem overdue testing of the iPhone's GPS on my iPhone 3G. First to see if it works over EDGE, as we know that it works over 3G and WiFi, and secondly to see if will work as a regular GPS unit by obtaining data directly from the sats if cellular o WiFi networks are not available.

I figure the former is yes and the latter is no. However, my GPS is not working at all on my sodding iPhone with v2.0. I only get the approximate location from Google Maps cell tower, which is fine for the most part, but surely not for GPS testing. I am considering moving to the v2.1 Beta.

Anyway, while I doubt Apple will add GPS to the iPod Touch in the next release or two, they could add a module that woud could query the satellites directly.

My GPS works great, and zeroes in quickly on m location.

However, i tried it during a short drive through the mountains yesterday, away from the cel antennae, and without 3G the phone cannot load maps.

I hope either Apple or a 3rd party will ad a feature that will allow the phone to hold a basic map in memory (say 100km from the current location) that would allow the posit function to work outside of cel range (which is where I like to spend my free time).

Tom Tom's USA and Canada Map is 900MB. I assume that is compressed and have no idea if it needs to be expanded on the device or if the firmware can read from it, like with zipped files.

They also sell regional US maps that are significantly smaller in size. What also is unknown is if the maps for the iPhone would be larger or smaller because of the architectures involved. I'd like to think that Apple's frameworks, like CoreAnimation would make easy work or Tom Tom if/when they port their maps, but I really don't know.

Look. I've had enough. This is my LAST post on this subject to you, no matter how provocative you try to be after this.

You can dance in the street, jump up and down, hold your breath until you turn purple, claim that you've won, disparage me further.

    I just don't care.

Say whatever you want, and be pleased you've had the last word.

Sorry to barge in on an interesting conversation between melgross and sapporoboy but I could not resist writing how interesting this conversation has been to read especially since I am a finn. A small nation like us and people are fighting over us. Made me feel soo good..

Not going to details of the conversation though. Somehow lost the track and the point of it in the middle of the thread.

But that said now a finn had the last word?

Any possibility that you might continue it still. It was starting to get interesting!

ps. And yes.. I am being sarcastic..
