why is the stats so inconsistent? It was not too long ago when BD has supposedly passed over 15% in optical disc sales. Anyway, 8% seems to be about right, but one thing most people do not realize is that the gain of BD in percentage is more impacted by decrease in overall DVD sales than increase in BD sales. I would assume that BD volume sales would stay consistent since it's supported by the niche enthusiasts market with little more expendable allowance than the J6P.

Regardless, the good news is that BD is the preferred HD optical format within enthusiasts, but the bad news is that it will most likely be preferred only among enthusiasts. So, is 8% market a significant achievement over nearly 3 year period?

Dell Inspiron with BluRay at $800+

    http://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=1155

Apple won't make BluRay available in $3000 laptops.

And DVD movies look blurry on 1920x1200 when blown up to full screen.

Note that this new Dell offering won't burn BR discs.

Apple won't ship BR drives without the ability to burn discs, and they are completely right in that regard.

There are BluRay drives that can burn BR discs. Just because Dell won't put one in a sub $900 laptop doesn't mean that they don't exist. Some people just want to watch movies at a decent resolution on their laptops.

Easy Padawan, I did not claim that BR burners didn't exist. I just pointed out why your "low-priced" example wouldn't be coming to the Mac.

If Apple goes BR, it will be pitched primarily as a solution for content creators and consumer data backup.

As we have been over time and again, Apple simply does not care about anyone who wants BR just for movie watching. To Cupertino, that's what the iTMS is for.

I think this prediction is optimistic.

In truth, since the past year I've bought everything online. Books, games, gadgets, computers, songs, movies, etc.. And had them delivered to me. Never bothered leaving the house.

The only thing I had to leave the house to buy was my iPhone.

I'm sure more and more people, as me, will find it more convenient to buy online, and more and more will find it more convenient to purchase or rent them from iTunes and similar services, than on optical media.

They offered combo drives that couldn't burn DVDs.

As long as Comcast keeps crippling our bandwidth (they upgraded my area and for 2 days I got 31Mb/s then they dropped me down to 12Mb/s) there is no way you can attain Blu-ray quality over cable. Comcast HD on demand is 2.1 and highly compressed garbage currently.

I guess we are really at the mercy of our providers, until we get 50Mb/s standard I will keep loving on my Blu-ray.

An interesting article about illegal or free file sharing :

I've also read somewhere that ISP were considering using a tiered system where you pay a fee based on how much bandwidth tou use in a month.

    And about BD :

As Bill Hunt over at The Digital Bits says, those numbers are particularly good considering the ongoing recession and the relatively weak title slate early in the year. He adds that the overall rollout for the format is slightly behind DVD "due to the recession," but ahead of VHS.

If we talk about stand-alone players, then count me too. Computers do it for me.

There are others too (see my post above). I am not a student but a working man with family and by choice we don't have TV at home (no stand-alone DVD player as well). We just don't have the luxury to regularly spend our time before that box, so computers are more than sufficient for the purpose (occasional movie watching).

Blu-ray is still too expensive for most people to justify a drive in their computer, let alone collecting the expensive media. While I watch blu-ray routinely via netflix, I'm not yet convinced it will ever succeed in a manner similar to CDRs, VHS or DVD.

I really don't know what to think about this. From a practical point of view, I got the first "hit" just yesterday. The wife and the daughter were out for renting DVD's. By some error, a blu-ray disk version of a movie (for kids) was given to them with the normal DVD of another movie. I paid no attention to the disk when I inserted it in the MBP and I was of course surprised to see that the disk was just ejected. Other computers did the same or had the disk spinning indefinitely.

Then I noticed the BD logo and I explained the situation. Of course the child was very sad. I wish I had a Mac with a BD drive, even if it was just for decoding.

Precisely why I left Time Warner/Comcast cable companies years ago. They're overpriced in my opinion and when they get bright ideas like this (crippling bandwith and nickel and diming consumers on usage), I feel an affirmation for taking my business elswhere.

I have AT&T Uverse now...lets hope AT&T doesn't get any bright ideas like this either (although with DSL I'm not technically sharing bandwidth as with cable).

Has some references to Blu-ray regarding Gracenote.

Perhaps Snow Leopard will bring Blu-ray support.

    I just went Blu

Yesterday I bought 4 shrinkwrapped BD titles

    Kill Bill vol 1

    Kill Bill vol 2

    Sin City

    From Dusk Til Dawn

$60 from a chap on craigslist. I don't have a player yet and I'm in no rush so I'll sit back and wait. Part of me wants to buy the BD player to rule them all and I really like the BDP-83 from Oppo but that's a bit on the high end side considering I also need to upgrade my AVR and look into a new 5.1 speaker system. But I've always wanted something that does SACD/DVD Audio. Maybe I go cheap to start out and then upgrade to the Oppo or something like it when my system is complete.

I'm looking at the Onkyo TX-SR607 (upscaling and 6 HDMI inputs incl a front mounted port).
