Pulling on and rotating the plug in the headphone jack creates no sound disconnection.

I guess the (logical) idea that earphones need mics and 3-ring plugs isn't entirely true. My speaker plugs have only 2 rings.

I've yet to receive the earphones with mics I ordered, so I can't say I'm fully out of trouble.

Man, you people are crazy! This is obviously a case of faulty sockets or bad design (or both) on the MacBook. Quit with the apologist crap already! I'm sure there are many people with MacBooks who also own a set of good quality, expensive cans and are not about to drop them in favour of a cheap pair of 'phones that will fit when actually any 3.5mm jack should fit. That socket on the MacBook should accept any 3.5mm jack plug wether it be a 2, 3 or 4 conductor type.

Those jacks are a worldwide standard and are made to exacting size and shape specifications by numerous manufacturers around the globe (though mainly in China) for many headphone brands. 0.5mm of a difference in size should not affect connection quality in any device.

Sony has been using a similar 4 conductor socket in many of its products for years now with no connection problems - either a 3 or 4 conductor jack plug will fit snugly into any Sony device (I should know, I own many).

    Change the socket already Apple.
