Actually 3/4 of the time I'll order something else if it's a Pepsi. 100% of the time I'll order something else if it's a PC

Following a trio of TV ads that cast Apple's 13-inch MacBook line as impractical purchases for average consumers on a $1000 budget, Microsoft on Thursday took aim at the company's professional line of notebooks in a fourth ad that doubles the spending limit of its role players.

The latest installment of the "You find it, you keep it" campaign features "Sheila," a self-described filmmaker shopping with a $2000 budget for a notebook with a "fast processor, big screen" and the ability to "cut video." She enters Fry's Electronics "open to any brand," but quickly discounts Apple's $1999 2.4GHz MacBook Pro -- the "best Apple" in her price range -- because it only has 2GB of DDR3 memory.

Sheila ultimately settles on a version of HP's 16-inch HP HDX 16t, which includes 4GB of slower DDR2 memory, a 2.13GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, a NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT with 512MB of video memory, and a display with a maximum resolution of 1366x768, compared to the MacBook Pro's 1440x900 max resolution.

The commercial, which can be seen below, ends before Sheila can begin her search for a viable video editing application to cut her video.

Both machines suck for the money, though for free you can't beat that!

She SHOULD have bought an ASUS. I am very disappointed that the Fry's staff didn't sell her on an ASUS, which kills HP and Apple in performance and specs. Frys sells an extensive line of ASUS laptops.

Maybe she should have bought this model instead: ASUS G50V-XT

Faster CPU, Much better video card, 15", 7200 RPM hard drive, Expresscard/54 and a non-soldered CPU and battery..... $1299. Destroys the Macbook Pro in specs, except no multitouch touchpad (which trackpads suck anyway), no magsafe power connector and it's not alunimum. It does have a backlit keyboard though and it's $800 cheaper.

The Macbook Pro (hardware wised) is overpriced by a significant margin. She can just use Boot 132 and run OSX. There is support built into the OS for the 9800, as machines running EFI-X can run a 9800GT PCI-E video card with no issues.

That Asus doesn't have a better CPU, it's an older gen. And since this is Asus, it's more than likely a TN display. That doesn't mean that the machine doesn't fit your needs perfectly, but don't say that it's better in way that is clearly isn't. Truly comparable non-Mac PCs with professional or prosumer grade components are comparably priced to MBPs.

You know, if Apple wants to respond to these ads in a meaningful way, how about they just stop skimping on features and shut them the hell up? Truth be told, it is ridiculous that their $2,000 "Pro" laptop doesn't come standard with 4GB of memory (piss on these ads however for ignoring the fact that it's only a $60 upgrade). How about Blu-Ray playback in a $1,500 laptop? Everyone else has it.

I've never had a PC die. Does that mean I should play the lottery, or your perception of PC lifetime is misconstrued?

If they responded, they'd be responding to a response. These ads are already a response to the "I'm a PC, and I'm a Mac" commercials. Both ads are just completely dumb, and it's scary that anyone would listen to them rather than do their own research before buying it.

Hell, before I even spend 300 dollars on something I read up on it as much as possible, yet alone 2000 dollars.

MS has been working with Intel on multithreading and maximising CPU usage since Apple was playing with those dinky G4 peices of shit (I speak as a former G4 owner, they sucked compared to the Intel boxes of the day, which is why Apple switched.)

Its all about the abstraction layers, Apple has Core* and windows has Direct X and Windows Foundation and .net, they tweak their code to work with the HAL, and the GPU drivers for both Mac and Windows are written by the people who designed the chips, at nvidia and AMD, so I would assume that they can tightly integrate the drivers to the hardware, hell they CREATED the hardware.

That, by its very nature is an impossibility. At the very least, it's untenable across the board.

The problem is that MS is trying to compete against a vendor who uses a vertically integrated model rather than a horizontal model which Microsoft and the PC market uses. The result is that you have a poor integrated approach to marketing, hardware and software design where the experience is as much dictated by the hardware vendor as the quality of the operating system - both of which are developed by two separate companies with different goals overall, in regard to their respective strategies.

Apple does have plenty of advantages over MS because they so much less HW to tune for. One area is power management, where you get more runtime on a Mac running OS X than with Windows.

Of course, old adages are hard to break. It's been years since that were true. Both PC OSes are great for such purposes, this really comes down to an OS preference.

What a metaphor for their products!

This will have ZERO effect on Apple's target market. But hey, keep 'em coming. Finally, these ads are showing the true face of MS: cheap, common, derivative.

an elitist, sorta dumb post, imho. are you saying only beautiful people buy macs? (geez: now i have to return my macs, my appleTVs, and my iPhone?! I better leave now, beat the queue)

    Don't be so obtuse.

    Marketing is all about IMAGE.

What image are the MS ads communicating? Would YOU want to be associated with that image?

    Yuck.

No way dude.. the Mac makes you beautiful.

I met my wife twice before we "officially met." We took no notice of each other the first two times and only realized they existed when talking later, well into our relationship. But, after I became a Mac owner we met a third time and the rest is history.

    Coincidence!? I think NOT!

As incredulous as these commercials are, you have to admit they are a very good effort.

Apple's commercials base their argument on software, and Microsoft's commercials base their argument on hardware. Which is sort of a unexpected reversal of roles when you think of it,

The dumb thing for Microsoft is their commercials ask a potential shopper to connect too many dots. As opposed to Apple's strategy of "Mac" is all you need to know - hardware, software, entertainment, digital lifestyle, mobile, creative, business, etc. When someone says "I'm a Mac" they're saying a lot more than someone saying "I'm a PC".

Both the asus and the MBP use the Intel T9550, 2.66 core 2 duo CPU. The Apple is capped at 4GB Ram according to Apple, the Asus can use up to 8 gigs. The Graphics card in the MacBook Pro is NOT a pro card, it is a gaming chip, the 130 is the next gen 9600GT. A REAL PROFESSIONAL laptop would have a Quadra FX Mobile chipset. as to the display issues, I have used asus laptops before and they are a lot easier to read and work with than the super glossy glass on th new apple notebooks.

It does weigh 1LB more, but if ONE FRICKING POUND is a deal breaker, lift some weights...

She says, "Oh look. Is this graphics card going to be powerful?"

The highly skilled, trained "PC Genius" replies, "mm hmm". LOL!

Apple should create a counter ad by "revisiting" these people after 100 days and, like some of those that voted for Obama, some of these PC laptop hunters, I bet will say, "it's not what I thought I were getting!"

$299 is the retail price for a 12.7mm model.

Am i missing something or has MS in their ads now told me that i can buy a $700 17" laptop and it has everything i need then why do i need to buy a $1500 17" laptop that has everything i need and why do i need to buy a $2000 16" laptop that has everything need?

    These ads are just stupid.

    Makes no difference, really.

Blu ray physical media is a dying technology. It was intrduced too late. The future (and ever-growing in the present) will be AppleTV-like devices that access online HD content. Wetstern Digital and Popcorn Hour already provide some of these solutions, though not every one includes wireless.

Blu ray players and Blu ray physical, movable media will soon be obsolete. It will go the way of physical sofware media. We get everything online now, donwnloaded. Just look at the App Store. That's the future, and it's already happening.
