I'm sure they'll find a way to change it to whatever we want.

/We are all fussing (Well some are) over the boot screen!

I admit its grey (per se) but to be honest do many of your guys boot all that much???I havent done so for quite a while [Terminal: uptime: 10:12PM up 17 days, 2:48, 2 users, load averages: 0.41, 0.26, 0.15]

i'm totally clueless when it comes to the BSD command line, so how do you check for total computer uptime in the Terminal?
  • Reply 26 of 85
Type 'uptime' at the command line.

    Oh . . . dear Lord . . .

This, along with the new updated 'design' for the PowerMac, is the kind of crap that makes me hate Apple. (Have I already made my rant about this? Apologies if I have . . . meh . . . I dont really even care, actually . . . this is that bad.

There are only two elements of the Macintosh experience that are truly holy and sacred. These elements are the Apple Menu and the Happy Mac.

In early builds of System 10, Apple had robbed and sucked the life out of the Mac OS by ripping out the Apple Menu and putting a functionless Apple logo in the middle of the title bar. . . . this was just so unbelievably retarded, its almost uncomprehendable. Someone finally slapped Steve in the head, and the Apple Menu returned to its rightful place as a constant and stronghold of the Macintosh as a concept and a brand.

People . . . this is worse than that, IMHO. The Happy Mac is the most original and distinct part of the Macintosh. It is the most recognisable and recallable characteristic of the Macintosh experience. It is the the element that is a metaphor for the Macintosh like no other. It cannot be replaced.

Now, evolution is fine. Theres nothing wrong with that. Although there are some minor things about Aqua that really do suck, it is none-the-less a significant jump in the evolution of the Macintosh GUI, and a beautiful one at that. The Happy Face, in all its glory, has remained stagnant and obsolete. It has not evolved. This is a problem.

Mac OS X should have had and should have the Happy Face updated to the Aqua theme. Trash that damn grey background for Aqua blue. Re-do that awesome little Happy Mac in 128x128xAlpha beauty. Have some animation, maybe. Maybe have 'hello' (or, the equivalent of 'hello' for other languages) flash after a 2 or 3 second delay.

Hmmm . . . but, no. We were complaining about the 'disfigured, maimed Happy Face'! LOL! EVEN THAT PIECE OF CRAP WAS 1000 times better than what is now. I cant believe it. I dont WANT to believe it. A boring ass f***ing Apple logo with that FU**ING THROBBER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, it is a cosmetic thing only. It has no negative effect on the usability of System 10.2. But this is no small deal. This is a tragedy. A foul thing that has been done to the Macintosh. Im not about to not upgrade to Jaguar because of it, but that doesnt mean I cant dis-like it immensly and accept it.

And you know what? All you people that claim its OK . . . you disgust me. All of you. How can you be so stupid? Really . . . its amazing. Im convinced that if Apple introduced a bag of lettuce as an update to the PowerMac line, some of you idiots would justify it.

"Its organic. And this is a characteristic that makes Apple more modern."

"Maybe someday, it could support DNA processing, and thus blow Wintel out of the water forever!"

or . . wait . . . heres the one I just want to hurl at: "If you dont like it, go buy a Wintel computer."

This is a tragedy on SO MANY DIFFERENT AND SIGNIFICANT LEVELS. This shouldnt--and cant-- stand.

I am a Mac-user. I would really like to continue using a Macintosh. I was not some NeXT/UNIX clown before OS X. Now that Apple has applied the wonders of Macintosh to UNIX and NeXT, I have learned to love NeXT and UNIX. But, take away the Mac element, and I am reduced to being the NeXT/UNIX clown that I would never have been by choice. Oh, God . . . here goes a rant to Apple.

There is nothing holy or sacred about a computer. That's just plain silly (and arbitrary). There are far more important things to be concerned about -- like actually using the thing.

Right on Mac OS X, the one with the lettuce... that is exactly the impression I've been getting of late in my voyages along the manifold macintosh forums.

Mac OS X, grow up, writing a letter like that to Apple is just going to get your email printed out and put on the 'read this and laugh your butt off' wall in the employee lounge.

I have been a Mac user since the beginning, hell I still have a working Mac Classic in my office to remind me where I came from. I'm all for modernization and it's people like you, who worship the holy Apple as if it was your ticket to heaven, make me sick. Yes there is a devotion to the brand name but geezus, pissin and moaning because you don't see a Mac smile at you on bootup every 30 days when you MIGHT restart? LOSER.

Mac OS X, it doesn't matter. Who shuts down their computer when they're running OS X anyway?

If no one remembers here, build 6c111 (i believe its thats build) of 10.2 had an updated smiley face classic mac. It auctually looked alot better than the dull grey apple they have now. They also replaced that great looking blue beachball for the fruity colored one. Oh well, those are two really dumb mistakes apple made. <img src="graemlins/oyvey.gif" border="0" alt="[No]" />

Also, the new updated happy mac in 6c111 WAS in 128 by 128 and it DID say hello under it.

Um... heh... you *do* realize that your 'original' Happy Mac wasn't introduced until what (help me out here folks) 1988? '89? The *really* old guard around here will recall that originally it was the Picasso Mac with 'Welcome to Macintosh'.

Sorry to burst your bubble like that, but the Happy Mac was a replacement for another *truly* original logo that no one thought could be replaced.

    Feh. Kids these days.
