Apple releases Mac OS X 10.6.6 with Mac App Store
Apple Thursday morning released update Mac OS X 10.6.6 for Snow Leopard, bringing the new Mac App Store, along with the usual bug and security fixes.
The Mac OS X 10.6.6 update is 114.8MB and is recommended for all users running Mac OS X Snow Leopard. It includes general operating system fixes that enhance the stability, compatibility, and security of Snow Leopard.
The update also includes the much-anticipated Mac App Store, which Apple has touted as the best way to discover and buy new apps for the Mac. The Mac App Store, is a new application users will find in the Dock, and it includes the following features:
Discover Mac apps: Browse featured apps, top charts, and categories, or search for something specific. Read detailed app descriptions and user reviews, and flip through screen shots.
Buy and install: Easily purchase apps with your iTunes account. Apps install in one step and are quickly available from the Dock.
App updates: The Mac App Store keeps track of all your purchased apps and notifies you when free updates are available.
The Mac App Store brings the App Store experience to the Mac, allowing users to find great new apps, buy them using their iTunes account, download and install them in just one step. The Mac App Store is available for Snow Leopard users through Software Update as part of Mac OS X v10.6.6.

The Mac App Store offers apps in Education, Games, Graphics & Design, Lifestyle, Productivity, Utilities and other categories. Users can browse new and noteworthy apps, find out what?s hot, see staff favorites, search categories and look up top charts for paid and free apps, as well as user ratings and reviews.
Entirely new apps, as well as current Mac favorites, are available from developers such as Autodesk, Ancestry.com and Boinx. iPhoto, iMovie and GarageBand apps from Apple?s popular iLife ?11 suite are available individually in the Mac App Store for $14.99 each, and Pages, Keynote and Numbers apps from iWork are available for $19.99 each. Aperture 3, Apple?s powerful photo editing and management software, is available for $79.99.

And if you are traveling internationally, you may want to pick up a Apple App gift card to purchase or get free apps not available in your region.
Looks like the U.S. store has the greatest selection. Uses the same iTunes Store accounts.
Select app. Purchase. Downloads and install automatically and is really fast.
Update: Selected a product. Clicked the developer's site and voila. Free trial. Not all mind you.

Aperture 3 is just 79.99? The box copy is 199.99. I wonder if this is a promotional price or the new permanent price...

Of course, now they need to update the Macbook Pro line again so I can buy a new one!
Otherwise, I'm pretty happy.
Interestingly, it lists Page as "installed", but it doesn't list TextWrangler as installed. Granted that's a free app. But it would be nice for the system to recognize other vendor's apps as having been installed. Probably because the App Store can only recognize its own type of DRM? That would make sense. Recognizing the existence of an app that has "dubious providence" would open the door too widely to fake installations & piracy to trick the app store into saying "You have a new update."

Also the App store doesn't recognize that I already have iWork installed, while it recognizes other software on my iMac... Which lends the idea that it IS iWork '11 and not iWork '09.

Install 10.6.6, then look in the black Apple Menu up top, just under "Software Update...", you'll see "App Store..."
