Tim probably figured it was a good time to make an announcement since the stock was up at record highs and Apple is looking to buy back shares soon. Good time to cool off the stock a bit.
Tim Cook is a great CEO despite his sexual orientation. But, Apple is a "public" company and should not be used as a platform for his personal choices. I am surprised that Apple's board of director's would agree to allow him to use Apple's high profile status to spread his personal agenda. Current and future stock holder's might not agree with his personal choices. This subject matter could lead to the detriment of Apple's leading position in the tech world. Forget about Samsung, Google and Microsoft. Mr. Cook's "gay agenda" could negatively affect the stock price and the public's perception of Apple as a whole. Right or wrong, Mr. Cook's "personal life" should be kept personal.
"despite his sexual orientation"
"personal choices"
"personal agenda"
etc., etc.
Pushed just a bit further your post would read as hilarious satire. But presently, it just reads as bigotry.
Again, what has any of that to do with Apple? Apple is not a platform for gay, straight, black, white, women's, men's, or anyone else's special interests. Their niche market need not be narrower. As a shareholder, I want them to be the company for anyone and everyone who wants quality and is willing to pay for it. There is no need to go off message.
Cook said in his editorial that he doesn't want to be an activist. So long as he sticks to that I don't see any issues. If he starts using Apple to become activist then I could see it turning people off. Because there are plenty of people who own Apple products that don't share the same political viewpoint as Tim Cook.
Care to share the 'defying market trend up until now' data with us?
Why is MSFT down? GOOG? FB? Did you see any announcements from them today?
The whole market is getting slammed. Don't look for rational explanations for stock market gyrations, it's almost entirely emotional and herd-like behavior.
I'm not sure where you stand on any of this. Your opinions seem to flip flop more than many politicians.
Tim can feel how he wants, but he shouldn't be using Apple as a public platform for his opinions.

Markets are down because QE Infinity just came to an end. Apple was up yesterday despite most stocks being down. So, what changed in people's perception of Apple's potential future to cause a big swing like today?

Was there a new Fed announcement? That would do it.
Except Tim has been known to expect people's undivided devotion, be it that they work weekends and nights, or answer 3AM emails, or drop everything and go to China, and other things. That's not fair for him to demand that of lower employees and then not be as focused himself.
Tim Cook expects undivided attention when appropriate. He's also extended Apple's Thanksgiving break for the last several years. I think its reasonable to assume that his understanding of what's best for Apple is different from yours. Your presumption that he's not focused is yours, and it's based on a dearth of knowledge of Apple's situation. It's not fair for you to demand that Tim ignore his experience to share your ignorance.

I feel similarly. Heck, I was fine with his statement about ROI this year (people all seemed to take that as "Global warming deniers, get out of the stock", but I took it as "if ROI is the only thing that matters to you, get out of the stock"). He just needs to focus more on Apple and less on this. Especially since it wasn't an issue, I really doubt people were saying "Gee, I wonder if he's gay? I can't focus on my life until he tells the truth!".

Agreed. Apple is in fact the exact opposite platform. They eliminate all the noise factors and focus on the requirements of the position. They are 'equal' in that they don't consider anything outside of the job to be done. They don't market to a demographic. And their hiring practices, as Tim pointed out earlier, are good, but could be less myopic (you tend to hire people like yourself, so minorities and females are underrepresented at Apple). They usually walk their walk and do little talking about it, and if someone challenges them on stuff like human rights, they don't work off 'talking points,' they research the issue and create a succinct, direct answer to the problem.
Was there a new Fed announcement? That would do it.
Yeah, but they announced that yesterday, which is why markets were down yesterday (and why they're down today overall). AAPL just seems to be taking a larger downward slide than you'd expect.

Your posts defy logic.
But hey, whatever makes you happy..... it's a free country.
Steve Job's committed his life to the success of Apple as the best tech company in the world. He rarely if ever spoke about his "personal life". I think Tim Cook should follow his lead and concentrate on the continued success of Apple. Do you want Apple to be known for having a successful gay CEO, or for being the best technology focused company in the world.
Was there a new Fed announcement? That would do it.
Apparently, the only person in the market who missed this news from many weeks ago is TheWhiteFalcon! " src="http://forums-files.appleinsider.com/images/smilies//lol.gif" />
Tim is gay?!! That's it. I'm not buying any more apple!
I couldn't even type that BS with a straight face. Good for Tim! He was a great COO. I'm sure he's going to continue to be a great CEO and he seems like great person in general.
Keep up the great work and ignore the hateful slurs of ignorant closeminded people.
Warning: I am going to make a mildly political statement here. Ignore if you don't want to read it...
That statement sounds alarmingly like the claims of racism that have been repeatedly invoked against any whom have disagreed with president Obama, which is similarly ludicrous.

Except Apple had been defying the market trend up until now. What changed between yesterday and today except for Tim's announcement? Nothing.

Actually, my posts are logical, it's the market that usually isn't.
And it's not a free country by any means. You're only free to express your opinion if it agrees with the current popular one.
