Yes, stop saying it's a fake, it's obvious, everbdy knows.
This is more like what I had in mind, though. More USB on the front, less FW, Two drive bays (maybe even an option for two optical drives), some sort of a grate over the speaker... And the little bump on the bottom right is so that the hinged door can swing open without obstruction by the surface it's sitting on. Maybe this wouldn not be necessary, if the hinge was built properly. I know it's not great, but This would be a cool, simple design. Apple doesn't usually put extraenous buttons and lights and such on their machines. I'd drool over something like this. But nicer.
G4Dude, hmm, I don't think Apple would introduce a design that is almost completely bilaterally symmetric like that only to put the eject button for the optical drrive on the side.
I can see LEDs and other things breaking the symmetry, but not the eject button.
Though the designs posted here aint bad I think the 'real' apple version will have a little more grace.
I'd, personally, like the new 'towers' to have an ibook white styling.
But I'm guessing 'steel' will be where it's going. Like the 'titanium' Powerbook.
Introducing the new Titanium 'power'Macs running at dual 1.1 and 1.3 gig hz....
I can hear SJ saying it now.
(Back to the old, Moto can't supply fast enough mhz so we go back to the 'dual' processor strategy we used last time we were miles behind and then sneakily dropped...)
...and then once the 7500 gets intro'd? Back to the dual in top model only? We'll see.
Anybody else think they'll be buying after next January?
I'd say a good number of us have been expecting a metal-clad tower, and that a smaller footprint is a common desire. The mockup that Warria posted fits dead-on with what we've all been thinking...and confirms the "problem" that I expected to encounter if the tower styling goes this way....it DOES look generic. But it's exactly what I'm expecting to buy sometime next year....so I look forward to seeing the new case design when it's eventually unveiled.
G4Dude's alteration helps to illustrate the size difference between the CD/DVD driver door and a HD bay. However it entirely fails to understand the design language of the metal tower look...and only succeeds in cluttering up the clean lines of the original posted image by centering one drive bay dead center. That wouldn't make it past the first jury.
Gizwald's speaker grill adds a nice dust trap in front....and again misses the point of the design. Why add a "bump" at the bottom when the original image looks sufficiently elevated to allow the entire side panel to drop? But I encourage the front of this thing to be HEAVILY populated with frequently used USB and FIREWIRE ports. Kudos for that.
Mostly, I hope that we get a design that serves to provide room for one badass motherboard.
If you don't mind me asking, where would you place the HD bay? Look on a computer, the 3.5" bay is ALWAYS in the center. I agree with the eject button thing that was mentioned earlier but it didn't look right in the center either. However, newer Apple designs have had no eject button, so the new PowerMac probably actually won't have one. I personally would buy the one I made if Apple came out with it. Some say it's too PeeCee-ish but it is still fairly Apple-like and very functional, while at the same time looking good.
The fakeness of the original image was something I mostly sensed from the text more than my first glance at the tower image. It just wasn't worded the way something on Apple's front page would be worded.
I believe the next PM case revision will be aluminum instead of just changing plastics on the 3.5 year old design they are using now.
I think a smaller footprint and a less curvy design would be nice, and really, the curves just use up space and cost money anyway.
As for the insides, the 166/333 bus/memory information sounds believable, and, sadly, it's the sort of thing I'd expect based on Moto's control of the processors Apple uses.
Still, it would be a nice improvement, and it would kick the PMs up into the range of being "purchase-worthy" in my opinion as long as the price could be swallowed.
I'm sure we won't be having hot-swappable hard drives on a PowerMac, but 1 or 2 available 5 1/4 drive bays on the front would be a good thing. Getting rid of the speaker on the tower and just selling external speakers would make sense too, especially since a lot of people just have their towers under their desk anyway.
(chuckle) You guys are hilarious. Your paranoia of fakes is so heightened that you dismiss a very plausible design -- based on differences from past Apple precedent (as if Apple never made sharp, precise shifts in their design style, or presentation habit, or pattern).
If it's not real, it's a *very* good job. This is not some amateur Photoshop hack.
Just for the record, it looks like the real deal to me. I think the Xserve was a glimpse into Apple's latest design direction. The specs may change, but this new design is it.
If Apple comes out with something like that I'm going to have to shoot myself. A boring, monotone color in a box design, if I wanted that I would build a Wintel.

I'm guessing you were "converted" fairly recently. Most of us cut our Mac teeth on beige boxes aesthetically undistinguished from PCs.
To each his own, but in the flesh I think that would be a badass looking bit of gear.
Looks excellent. I would definitely get one. It would win over alot of PC users as well.
My friends don't like the look of quicksilver or any previous powermac. They think they look like toys. A machine like this would definitely go over well with them and others who prefer a more machine/systematic design. I must admit this is the best powermac design I've ever seen. If Apple passes a design like this up then there is something wrong with them. The trend in design lately has been hard edges geometric. A design like this would fit perfectly into everything that's new.

I assume you are talking about my version
Yes, I too think it is the best looking PowerMac ever. It would win over MANY PC people too 'cause it could be taken seriously.
As much as I would like a brushed metal Powermac, I expect Apple to use a cheaper material in the next Powermac case design. Constructing an entire tower out of brushed aluminum would cost much more than the current sheetmetal/plastic design, and I just don't see Apple adding more to their manufacturing cost without a good reason.
Speaking about the original design posted, it is a good job indeed. It's not real, however - we would know if it were. If it were the real next revision G4, Apple would have moved to pull it from all the sites that currently display it. Apple has done it before. And even if it's real, and even if Apple didn't try to pull it because of widespread dissemination, Jobs would likely scrap the case and go with a totally different design just to keep us guessing.

I'm not opposed to the 'x-serve' styling idea.

I agree w/ you about the critic's role as 'negative space'...but that just points up your ignorance re: yin & yang.
Sorry.

Good one.
New Macs looking like PCs?
I doubt it.
The Xserve is utilitarian. It's not designed.
The new case (if there is one) won't be based off of it.

it may be perpectivly ok (is that a english word?) but nobody can fool the eye. and there is just something wrong with the hole thing.
but a nice idea!
maybe we will see something like that in the near future.
...do we realy need hot swapable hd's in a workstation?
i like the aluminium.
