While this is forward looking and slightly off topic can someone go into a bit more detail of resolution independence as well as dynamism and how it relates to OS X, Quartz, Open GL, etc. \

    Thanks

Resolution independence is all about objects on the screen retaining their size.

LCD screens will eventually be able to produce +300ppi images. This will make pictures look extremely crisp. Unfortunately, it'll also make bitmap pictures look smaller on screen because more pixels can be shoved into a square inch.

Because OS X isn't totally resolution independent, windows and icons look smaller when you change to a higher resolution.

Resolution independence, however, is supposed to prevent this and retain the size of objects yet allow them to look crisper.

I think we're still far away from this though. Computers and graphics card need to get quite a bit faster for all of this...but it's coming, 7-10 years from now, we'll have some very high definition LCD screens and some pretty powerful computers...but they'll still feel slow because the GUIs and apps will have evolved to really push their limits.

I don't know if this has already been mention... im a bit too lazy to read through 20 something pages.

But Apple finally implemented the ability to close closeable windows from the dock, a feature i've been waiting for since 10.1

    take a look:

    yay!

Yeah, that's been mentioned. It was actually a feature that was present in 10.2 Jaguar developer builds but was pulled in the later builds just before GM.

It's about bloody time! It doesn't make sense to click on a window to un-minimise it, and then close it. m.

Because it doesn't work well with apps that bring up sheets or warning dialogs to "Save" or windows that aren't closeable.

Yeah. When I played with the MIP that was floating around, I rarely had Close work. So I gave up. But it's nice to see it coming back. Close in Dock at least.

If a sheet or dialog comes up it can just un-minimize. If the window can't close, then either there would *be* no "Close" item, or it would be disabled. Shmeasy.

you can now set your mac to start at a specific time! lookie!

    whee!

    now some Xbench.

I am running 7B80 on an 867 Quicksilver with 640 RAM and a Radeon 9800 (overkill, i know, but i got a really good deal on it. ).

Notice the CPU test took quite a hit, why, im not sure. i made sure i had only finder running when i preformed both of these tests, so who knows. my computer doesnt seem to be running any slower.

I'm not sure what the vecLIB FFT does, but it seems to be running much slower. everything else seems okay.

but take a look at the UI test. A more than 75 PERCENT IMPROVEMENT. thats kick ass.

So could we see a 10.3 release either this week or next? I've been hearing that it's getting close to completion. Also that screenshot from wired.com, this one:

shows the Panther pre-release running on a 400 MHz G3 with 192 MB of RAM. Does anyone have a 400 MHz G3 with that much memory or more with a preview build of Panther installed and running? I ask because I have a classmate who has a 14" Pismo Powerbook clocking in at 400 MHz with 640 MB of RAM and he's hesitant to switch from 10.1.5 to 10.3. Can anyone help me (and him) with that?
