Now I don't want to derail the discussion in this thread, could you tell me why in the other thread, where I just posted (rather repeated) some info about Freescale chips?

well, my dual-G5 2GHz just shipped, so that pretty much GUARANTEES an update in about a month (just outside of when i can get some sort of partial refund).

I still think WWDC will be the big date with an all new PowerMac, and Tiger launching.
maybe what is taking "so long" on these powermacs is Apple is building up stock--> maybe they do not want to make the mistake of the last revision by shipping high-end models monthes after the "release"
That could be very true. This was my biggest complaint about apple. Last year they were late on shipping over 10 different products. From Xserve to iPod mini to Powermacs... etc etc. I made a list 6 months ago. If they could get their act together on this, they can start attacking my other complaints:
When are these bastard PowerMacs going to come out?
I've finally got the beans dedicated for a new PM purchase. I've suffered long enough with this vacuum cleaner-loud MDD. But I'm not going to purchase until something new comes out. I refuse. I don't care if they just get us to 3 Ghz, or if it's just PCI-E. But for the love of God Apple, give us something new.
There's no reason for them to be coy with all that money they've made off the iPods now. Give us "pros" something tasty. I think we deserve it.
Ideally we'd see dual-core/dualies with PCI-E at NAB, along with FCP 5.0. But who knows what occupies the Apple engineers time these days.
*What's that you say? I can't hear you because the Mac I bought is so damned loud I need ear plugs!*

Its looking more like WWDC every day. It definitely can't be any later than that. If it is WWDC then expect some nice machines. If its a regular day... expect very incremental updates (I'm kind of expecting that at this point).

I've been asking myself a question on that very issue: if Apple gives us a ho-hum what to do? Wait on the Power5 G6's? Buy a refurbed 2.0 dual (cheap) to tide me over? Go with - gasp - AMD's dual core Opteron's?
This is cruel and unusual (maybe not that unusual - look who we're dealing with) punishment.

ROFLMAO!!!!!!
Yes WWDC is a good guess. They can't delay more than that. On a more optmistic view, possibly at NAB coming this week.

At this point there is no way they can just offer an "incremental update" it's just been too long for that. Anything short of Dual Core and PCI-E will have the pro users marching to the Apple campus. After their failed promise of 3 GHZ a YEAR ago and no update for a YEAR this update cant be anything short of amazing.
An incremental update would be an outrage after a year. I hope they have something really big to show off because in 2 months I'm buying something. PowerMac, BOXX, or Alienware. I'd rather it was a Mac though.

I agree, it's been too long. we all deserve a kick ass machine to pay homage to our patience.
Well I probably shouldn't have been so negative with my last post. But I am frustrated with my MDD. Not my most favorite Mac I've ever owned. I really want a G5 that will last a while. I hate switching out computers.
I would say that I'd consider a WinTel box, but it just isn't going to happen. I've tried both Windows XP and Linux machines as alternatives and every time the experience was horrible. Besides, I use Final Cut Pro every day and I'm not about to switch NLEs, certainly not when FCP 5.0 seems to be right around the corner. I'm a sucker for Apple software.
Oh well. I just need to take a deep breath and be patient until we see the new PowerMacs, and hope they will be a new generation, rather then a minor revision.

I lost my patience and went with an Athlon64 system running Linux. Sorry guys but I get a real 64 bit upgrade for about the price of a configured Mini.

Autumn seems a long way off.

Apple now has a good strong consumer lineup and needs to focus
their attention on their top of the line products.
If the new PowerMacs are in fact announced at WWDC, I hope
shipping delays won't drag this out too much longer.
I've even considered getting a 12" PB to hold me over till the
Quadra's are available, but that blows half of my PM budget.
I simply have trouble justifying the purchase of any single processor
G4 this late in the game.
Annually updates -> bi-annually updates

Plus they eliminate the dead space when they don't sell any product. (Folks waiting for the announced but not shipping upgrade.)
