Messiah, I notice the long boot times too. It takes a while for the blue bar to appear and the blue bar stays a while too. That never happened before the update.
The next time you reboot, boot times will be back to normal. Trust me. (unless your next reboot is due to an update)
1) What's up with DesktopScreenEffectsPref? Is that the CLI hack to run your screensaver as your desktop?
No. Desktop & Screen Effects was the original (Jaguar) name of the preference pane that is now Desktop & Screen Saver. It's one pane, so it's in one bundle. The bundle has never been renamed, as it isn't intended to be user-visible.

3) All that z-stuff looks like something relating to ZFS, although Tiger looks like a strange place to put it.
Quote:
./usr/bin/zcat
./usr/bin/zcmp
./usr/bin/zdiff
./usr/bin/zegrep
./usr/bin/zfgrep
./usr/bin/zforce
./usr/bin/zgrep
./usr/bin/zless
./usr/bin/zmore
./usr/bin/znew
Actually, all of these are related to .gzip and/or .Z, i.e. to compression/archiving. They are unrelated to ZFS, and not new.
10.4.8 kills my built-in iSight camera in my iMac, anyone else get this? It starts out fine and then immediately fades to black. If I shine a flashlight into it I can barely make out the light it emits, so the hardware is not broken, it's a software issue. I've also proved this by reinstalling the OS; it worked fine again on a base 10.4.4, and breaks again when I update to 10.4.8.
Installed 10.4.8 this morning, and this afternoon I got a kernel panic trying to play a song in iTunes. This hasn't happened in at least a year for me. Anyone else experienced any kernel panics?
This is my holy opinion on updates after 22 years using Apple and using 10.4.7 starting from 10.0 (then 10.01, 10.0.2, -> 10.1 -> .... -> 10.4.7 - except when switching to Intel, of course...) each one on top the other!!! And sometimes also betas on GA. Period.
1) Verify Disk
2) If step 1 is OK then verify permissions (you can have problems ONLY if your disk is already corrupted).
3) Restart
4) Install Update (better always Combo. Please note: 10.4.8 update from SW Update: 211 Mbytes; Delta Update 206 MBytes. This means that if I d/load a Delta and apply it something may go wrong...)
5) Restard (by force)
6) Re-check permissions
7) Clear out all caches with whatever you want
Eight) Restart (by force) + PRAM reset
This is my procedure and NEVER got problems with updates except for code bugs.
Did anybody verify OpenGL performance regardless the fact that apps need to be optimized for MT OpenGL if it might be implemented as we tought it could have been done?
My procedure on updating, ever since 10.1.4, with never a problem:
1) Download and Install Update.
2) Restart.
3) There is no step three.
Mine is very similar, starting with 10.0.2:
1.) Update my backup
2.) Download and Install Update via software update
3.) Restart by pressing "restart" button that appears at end of update.
Clearing out caches, PRAM resets etc. are only necessary if you have a problem. Routinely cleaning caches can actually cause unexpected problems and is poor advice to give.
Installed on a G4 powerbook and no issues so far. I don't see any differences either to be truthfull it is the same speed. I suppose this is a good thing for me then.

(edit) Sorry, hadn't seen JeffDM's post.
the new interface color sucks
I don't have the slightest idea what you are talking about.

hahah i know right? what is he talking about?
Does ANYBODY else's Command-N not work?
Make a second account and see if it works there. That may narrow the issue down.
There was a guy whose shift-T didn't work and it worked on a second account. Unfortunately he split before we could find out what the deal was.
I'm experiencing the same problem on my 20" intel iMac. Found anything out about it?
I used Onyx to clear out all the caches and rebuild the system... all seems OK... for now.
2.0 Ghz MacBook, 1 GB RAM. iTunes 7.0.1.
Anybody noticed any issues with PowerMac G5 . I am scared to update.
None what so ever.

I predict problems with Flash playback on PPC systems.
Here is why.
According to Apple, 10.4.8 includes Flash Plugin 9.0.20.0
However, 9.0.20.0 is for Intel, while the current version for PPC is 9.0.16.0.
You would be wrong, Flash 9.0.20 is a security fix and universal binary which will work fine on PowerPC and Intel versions of 10.4
This is my holy opinion on updates after 22 years using Apple and using 10.4.7 starting from 10.0...
Impressive. 22 years of OS X experience
I think the effort you go to is ludicrous though for a modern OS.
My method is simple and failsafe so far:
1. download the combo updater
2. install and reboot.
easy.
I have been burnt in the past using the delta's back somewhere around the 10.2.3 days.
Not noticed anything else with this update.
(PowerBook G4 15" 2GB RAM 1.67GHz CPU low-res screen)
I installed the updates and the damn system started up in Windows!!!!!!!!!
Unless I hold the option key down when rebooting, it will start Windows.
Of course, this is moot as when Mac OS X starts up, I get a message saying to hold down the power button to restart.
I CANNOT get into Mac OS X. Windows works fine.
What the hell is this.
I am pissed beyond belief!
Any ideas here?
Thanks.
the new interface color sucks
I noticed it also, though i was loosing my mind, until I read your post.
