Why is that an exageration? The MB is slightly thicker and only 4 ounces lighter yet is only a 13" screen. If it were a 15" like the MBP I think it's safe to say it would be bigger and heavier. Does that make the MB a poor machine? Absolutely not. But the MBP design is better IMO and I'm glad no major changes were made. The only feature on the MB better than the MBP is the magnetic latch IMO.

Here at AI they are complaining about swapping out the hard drive. Over at DSLR's All Things Mac they are complaining about the *@&#*#( video card as usual. I expect to hear from Joe whatever about the MBP not having SLI.

Because everybody who is opposed to better ease of service seems to be implying that if Apple makes even the slightest change, then we will suddenly require forklifts in order to carry a single laptop. "Bigger and heavier"? By how much, and how noticeable will it be to people? Technically, if a laptop weighed 0.00000000000001 ounces more and was 0.00000000000001 nanometers thicker, then it would still be considered "bigger and heavier". But would that cause people to exclaim "OMG! It's BIGGER and HEAVIER"?

I think it has more to do with the enclosure material, the plastic is thicker and fairly dense.

I doubt a decent drive access would add much weight, it would only be a little heavier than the memory cover panel.

bwahaha, i just ordered my new mbp! i went for the base model with glossy screen and 160 gig hard drive. with student discounts, it wasn't worth $500 dollars for the minor speed bump, extra graphics, and gig of ram. as much as i would love to have those things, i simply can't afford it. i'm probably going to upgrade my ram to 2 gigs eventually, once i have more money, but for now, 1 gig will do. the thing that tempted me most to go for the mid-level was the graphics card, since i want to be able to play some games, but i figure i'll be able to make do with what i've got. i have a pc i built with a radeon x800 w/ 512 mb ram, so if i want to do some real gaming, i have options. anyways, for me, it wasn't worth 500 dollars to get minor upgrades. FINALLY i'll have a nice mac all to myself!

oh, and i picked up a canon pixma mp460 at the same time... 30 bucks after rebate :-D

Plus, Sony and Acer are using it on their laptops, and at least Sony (the VGN-SZ381P/X) is getting pretty good results, with a pretty damn light and thin notebook (3.7 lbs, .9"thick), and it's basically the same price as their previous line of ultra portable laptops was (3 grand). So, i don't think the cost of materials makes it an impossibility. If other manufacturers can do it, i'm sure Apple can (and better)...

That's the point. The GOOD frames do cost that amount.

And Sony and others aren't using the material for the shells. They are using a very thin layer on top for appearance.

Just like anything else, there are different quality levels of this product at different price levels.

They had a small bit about it, though not very much. This is much more complete, so I thought you'd like to read it.

There is one person posting recently who would do that. He would claim that it IS heavier, even if it couldn't be measured.

I just ordered my MBP today:

    15"

    2.33 Ghz

    256 Graphics Memory

    2 Gigs Ram

    160 gig HD

    Airplane Adapter

    USB Modem

    Applecare

I can't wait to get it. I purchased my first Mac around 2 months ago, well just as soon as the C2D imacs came out but it was mostly for my son who uses Mac's in college. Ever since he got that for his birthday I've wanted a Mac so bad and have decided to make the switch from Windows so this will truly be my first Mac! I hope I get it soon. The airplane adapter shipped today but the rest hasn't yet. It shows Oct. 31st as the ship date. I am going to order a few accessories elsewhere like a good case (any suggestions?), usb hub, usb memory card reader, etc.

you made a great choice. Fantastic machine for the money, imho. With 2gb memory, a core 2 duo @ 64bit and 160gb drive you have a system that will take you through Leopard and the next 3 releases of the OS if you so desire or even longer. Nice. You'll love it. Whatever you do, don't sweat the small upgrades that come up in the next year even if they are keyboard, case, or drive changes (flash).

Granted the Graphics card is the same, but I think its because the newer graphics card which are supposed to be cooler haven't been released yet if memory serves me correctly.

Anyways great job Apple, if I had the money I would definitely buy one 8) 8)

Btw my MacBook is finally fixed... yay!!

I agree with you. We have waited for a long time to get this update and you guys are b*tching about it. We got the C2D and better hardware in this new version! Go ahead and wait another 6 months to get the San Rosa computer. I go by the guide I have heard about buying Apple products. Don't wait for the next update because you are never going to get the newest or best computer out there. There will always be another computer up and coming that is better then the previous one. I would recomend to get this update, its new and worth the time waiting for it. You can go and get the San Rosa in april but right now this computer fits my needs right now.

I know that the airline adapter won't work with car chargers. My question, is there a car charger available for it? Even if it's 3rd party that's fine as long as it works. I travel some by plane but obvoiusly could get much more use out of a car charger.

And be amazed how your MB has scratches on the monitor after a while. I've seen three MB's all of them having scratches because of how it opens/closes. I agree the new method *looks* neat, but in the end the MBP proved itself a long time ago, the MB still has to.

What I don't like about the MB screen is that the latch opening is right in the middle where the camera is. So when you open the screen, your thumb is often pressing on the camera.

As for the MacBook Pro and previous G4s: In those laptops, there is a small metal plate under the palm area which moves back when you press the latch release button. The hook on the display panel latches onto this piece to hold the screen shut. Over time, this metal piece is chipped away by the hook and eventually, the screen can no longer stay closed. To add insult to injury, this piece is not easily replaced. Since the latch plate is part of the bottom case, the screen and every single internal component first have to be removed, and then the entire bottom case has to be replaced.

This could be easily resolved by making the latch opening wider.

Santa Rosa is an update to the Centrino "platform". As well as providing the CPU, Intel also provides support chips such as "northbridges" (which connect the CPU to RAM), "southbridges" (which connect I/O ports to the northbridge), wireless chipsets, integrated graphics and the like.

The current Centrino platform is codenamed "Napa". Santa Rosa is an update to these support chips and will provide a faster FSB to the proccessor, 802.11n wireless, faster integrated graphics, and support for Flash-optimised HDDs. I'm sure that if you google "intel santa rosa" you will unearth plenty of reading material. Have a look at this wikipedia page to get you started.
