  • Developer Blix claims new evidence of App Store 'monopoly' in court filing

    chaicka said:
Hmmm... Apple is definitely not the first to use the technique of “using manageable public interaction addresses, without revealing their private interaction addresses.” as the mechanism of protection. Namecheap’s WhoisGuard service (used to be paid service on annual fee) uses the same to protect domain owners from having their private email address being exposed in Whois Lookups. So, in this case, Namecheap has infringe Blix’s patent?
The patent as asserted by Blix would also be covering the basic email forwarding specification in RFC 5321, literally section 3.4
3.4. Forwarding for Address Correction or Updating

Forwarding support is most often required to consolidate and simplify
addresses within, or relative to, some enterprise and less frequently
to establish addresses to link a person's prior address with a
current one. Silent forwarding of messages (without server
notification to the sender), for security or non-disclosure purposes,
is common in the contemporary Internet.

  • AirTag hidden in luggage forces tourists to change vacation plans

Just a tip: If you find any tracking device on you - then go to a new location prior to disabling it, since the last location will be known to the stalker and you don't want to force their hand to seek you out at your actual location.

Also instead of throwing out the tracker, consider attaching it to a benign moving object, so that a stalker will be confused and drawn away from you e.g. put it in an envelope and post it to the police, put it in a public waste receptacle, leave it on a bus, etc - just don't put it on another person. You don't want the stalker to have any certainty over your whereabouts.

  • Tim Cook responds to Facebook's attack ads with tweet about privacy

Apple is trying to monetize privacy.

"Monetize privacy" is an exaggerated metaphor at best. Meanwhile, without hyperbole, Facebook makes almost all of its money by exploiting your privacy - whether or not you have a Facebook profile.

Apple could do little to nothing about the privacy issue and they would be on par with every other tech giant and PC manufacturer. Apple's privacy efforts are out of scale with any meaningful impact to their bottom line. Eventually you have to give credit where it is due, Apple's privacy advocacy is part of their ethics.

  • Epic's Tim Sweeney said he would have taken special deal with Apple

How does this help their case, it demonstrates:
    1. Epic is not bona fide in their claim that they are advocating for small or voiceless developers.
    2. Epic desires unequal treatment in the app store, special favours for them and them alone.
    3. Epic's actions are entirely profit driven.
    4. Epic's PR campaign against Apple is wilful slander.

  • 128M iOS users were affected by 2015 XcodeGhost malware

Yep let’s definitely remove even more barriers to publishing software on these devices which carry all of our personal information, banking access, private messages/photos/etc. /s

It’s like we don’t already have a preview of this with Cydia on jail-broken iPhones: Malware packaged with all manner of titles, especially free games which lures in naive users and kids.
Also keep in mind that the smartphone platforms are constantly the target from blackhats to intelligence agencies: the idea of opening the gates to 3rd party stores out of Apple’s control is plainly stupid.

  • Compared: Apple Studio Display vs LG UltraFine 5K Display

Not measured here are the myriad of other issues with the LG UltraFine 5k, including:
    1. slow wake time or more rarely unresponsive to waking.
    2. backlighting issues best described as the macbook “stage light” problem.
    3. The “hydraulic” adjustment system is jerky and requires two hands to operate, it’s also is easy to de-level the screen.
    4. The apple community forums are full of system crash complaints related to the LG screen. Particularly if using a macbook pro with dual GPUs.
    5. Colour consistency is poor with a noticeable gradient.
    6. Sometimes the display will wake with a stripe of offset pixels.

One final note: the apple display has their typical hard glass surface, the LG has no protection, it’s just the cheaper plastic-feeling deformable/soft layer

  • Jobs biographer sides with Apple in Facebook privacy feud

This is what Facebook/Instagram is like: I have reported drug dealing accounts that have either added or messaged me numerous times trying their luck. Every single time Facebook/Instagram have come back with no action because they believe it doesn't violate their guidelines (even though there is a specific section of their guidelines which outlines this exact behaviour.)

Some of these provides are so brazen that they have not one or two duplicate accounts, but more than 50+ accounts with identical drug dealing content. Literally their entire account is nothing but photos of contraband and how you can buy it.

Facebook/Instagram are total ratshit services pretending to be good public citizens.

  • Apple made secret 5-year $275B deal with Chinese government

Go figure. Apple. That's why CCP leaves Apple alone vs. other U.S. companies. To do business in Asia, all you have to do is bribe to get your place secured.
That’s the problem with the report and this line of thinking; the CCP don’t leave Apple alone - regular readers of apple news can trivially recall numerous recent examples where the CCP’s state controlled media have encouraged Apple boycotts and similar.
Apple have incredibly limited activities in the country and don’t even have some of their most basic services available.

If there is a deal - it’s a bad one because Apple is not getting anything out of it - rather it appears whatever tolerance the CCP has for Apple is driven by their indirect employment of millions of workers through device production.

  • Epic must pay $245M after luring customers into 'Fortnite' purchases

Imagine how much more they would have if they didn't have Apple standing in the way with confirmation-based IAP and making available refunds for legitimate accidental purchases. (It's a lot more than a 30% cut.)

  • Apple agrees to make key App Store changes, create $100M fund to settle developer lawsuit

Then they took the goose and cut it open, because certainly there must have been more gold inside.
