  • Apple's Tim Cook talks education, says he wouldn't want his nephew using social media

    Latko said:
I don't see a single reason why Cook - a father without kids - could have the necessary experience, idea or insight about how I should raise my kids.…
Mr. Cook accrues insight through paying attention to those he quietly admires, just like I do, and you, I presume, too:
    ___

Even Silicon Valley parents who work for social media companies tell me that they send their children to technology-free schools in the hope that this will give their children greater emotional and intellectual range. Many were surprised to learn that Steve Jobs did not encourage his own children’s use of iPads or iPhones. His biographer reports that in Jobs’s family, the focus was on conversation: “Every evening Steve made a point of having dinner at the big long table in their kitchen, discussing books and history and a variety of things. No one ever pulled out an iPad or computer.” Our technological mandarins don’t always live the life they build for others. They go to vacation spots deemed “device-free” (that don’t allow phones, tablets, or laptops). This means that America has curious new digital divides. In our use of media, there are the haves and have-nots. And then there are those who have-so-much-that-they-know-when-to-put-it-away.

  • Apple Vision Pro shipments reportedly cut as US demand for headset wanes

Apple should make a docking station for it so when you don’t want to wear it you can use it as a Mac Mini with a monitor, keyboard and mouse. That way the dual purpose helps someone justify the price.
I agree. If the Vision Pro headset ran macOS software and thereby functioned as a $3,500 extra mobile 4K laptop, then my interest level would have been much higher.

  • Vision Pro to ship with 1TB storage

I am looking to learn the most effective approach for adding storage to the Vision Pros. Maybe the answer is as yet unformed if not unknown.

  • Pegatron plans second iPhone plant in India

On the AppleInsider cover page, I read the headline: “Pegatron plans second iPhone plant in India”. As my eyes journeyed south to William Gallagher’s name, they took a small detour to the left and spied Chinese characters. I suspect that this photograph is of a building in China, not India. :-)

Within the article, I see the picture caption: “seeks to expand…outside of China.” That’s a better fit, but a stock image of the plant in India, a little Devanagari, would still be charming.

  • More M4: When the Mac will get upgraded with the latest Apple Silicon

Well, the M3 wouldn’t support iPad Pro’s new screen and they apparently had enough M4 chips ready so we got an M4 iPad Pro. As others have said, it may take them additional months to have enough M4’s to update all the other lines as well as to manufactures the M4 Pro, Max, and Ultra chips.  One other possible explanation for a delay could be that Apple wants to include Thunderbolt 5 in some or all of these models and bring out an updated Studio Display to take advantage.

While Apple does sometimes just update a particular spec, it seems like when they multiple advancements at hand, they like to roll them out all at once rather than piecemeal. I couldn’t really see Apple announcing M4 (but not M4 Pro, Max, and Ultra) desktops now and then 4-9 months later adding those faster chips along with Thunderbolt 5 and whatever else might be upgraded. Probably there is not that much demand for the base model Studios and Mac Pros? And the advancement of the M4 would not be much news if it is slower than the high-end M2s so who would upgrade to that rather than wait a few more months for the truly high-power models? I get that its frustrating to know that the M4 is out and yet we seemingly won’t be able to use it in a Mac for awhile, but we can also see it as, you know, Christmas came early for the iPad Pro, the glass is half full rather than half empty, and lots more goodies are coming soon! :)
I can’t judge a “delay”, but for my interest, intent, and investment, Thunderbolt 5 is primary. M4 is a step on the road toward this destination. (Somewhat similarly with the Vision Pro, with the current state of the technology, I am happy to offload the processing and power supply, and maybe EyeSight, too, but please sport the highest quality main display).

I wonder if it would be possible to have a binoculars feature? Uses could be spotting and pinpointing forest fires from a firetower, navigating a boat, bird watching and identifying, etc.

Folded optics may come to play a role here. When internal optics are insufficient, external optics feeding into the Vision Pro headset could create a powerful exploration device, a powerful decision making device. I’m cheering for it!

  • iPadOS 26 fixes nearly everything wrong with the platform after everyone already left

    Wes writes:

“If you’ve never used Screenshot X or Paste, you’re missing out on macOS. Apple’s built-in screenshot tool is fine, but with Screenshot X I can grab a transparent PNG of a window and drop it into an image editor with a background already prepared and export it a second later.”

I don’t see a version of Screenshot X for macOS. Does he mean CleanShot X?

  • Oppo Find N5 foldable phone review: Apple's now on notice

Unfolded, the Oppo Find N5 is nearly square. One point of differentiation could be for Apple to outfit a folding iPhone with square image sensors, decoupling holding from framing. Along for the ride could be stacking the flash directly above the sensors, which would allow the flash to be in the (generally) optimal position to each. With that being said, is a $2,500 small iPad something I will choose to purchase?
