  • Apple to drop prepaid multi-year AppleCare+, but keep subscription option

The catch which is not mentioned in this article is that the Applecare+ warranty cannot be transferred to another owner/account, whereas the prepaid version can be.  So if you have a subscription Applecare+, it is only good for the original subscriber.  This is a way that Apple is preventing Applecare+ being purchased by anyone other than the original owner.  So if you buy a used Apple product, be aware you will not be able to get Applecare+ even if it was recently purchased.

  • USB-C cable shopping for an iPad or Thunderbolt 3 Mac is still a nightmare for consumers

I am surprised that this article does not list the best cable.  What a person wants is a cable that works with all standards.  After a lot of research (more that this author it seems), the longest universal cable is made by Apple.  It is .8m, which is the longest passive cable I could find.  (Usually they are .5m) "This 0.8-meter cable supports Thunderbolt 3 data transfer up to 40 Gbps, USB 3.1 Gen 2 data transfer up to 10 Gbps, DisplayPort video output (HBR3), and charging up to 100W. Use this cable to connect a Mac with Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 3 devices such as docks, hard drives, and displays. You can daisy-chain up to six Thunderbolt 3 devices. "

2.6 feet and will do everything.  $39.  If you need longer, you need to wait for the new ones like the author says.

The other major problem that the author does state is that there is no LABELING standard, which means that you can have a stack of USB-C cables and have NO idea which one is for what.  If you buy the other cables, then you get to decide - do you want thunderbolt 3 but not USB 3.1 gen 2?  Or do you want to be throttled on thunderbolt 3 to 10Gbps?  60W?  100W?  Everytime I need a USB cable, I need to look at the cable and try to recall what kind of cable it is and if i cant remember, I have to determine by trial and error.  So I am throwing out all my cables except the Apple ones.

My opinion is that right now, get the Apple 2.6ft cable that is universal and if you need longer, get the 2m thunderbolt 3 cable.  You will have just 2 types of usbC cable:  2.6 ft universal and 6 ft thunderbolt 3 and your life is simple. The amount of money you save isnt worth the headache or time to have a bunch of specialized cables that each has different limitations.

BTW, here is some tech details: active means there is a chip on the connector, passive means no chip.  Passive has limits to the length before the signal degrades.  usually .5m, but apple's is .8m, which is significant in terms of usability.  active chips only do thunderbolt and not usb3.1 right now.

  • How to use Stolen Device Protection

With a screen time passcode to lock settings, one needs to remove the screen time passcode, then go to content and privacy restrictions to allow for passcode changes. Then the face ID and passcode will show up in settings and you can now turn on Stolen Device Protection.  Then if you want the added security, turn back off passcode changes and set your screen time passcode.  I have yet to figure out if having the screen time passcode and the Stolen Device Protection is redundant now.

  • How to upgrade the SSD in your M4 Mac mini

I did this and discovered in the apple support document that you cannot use TB3 cables to do the DFU restore. I can guarantee this is correct and the DFU restore will fail with a cryptic error message.  I used a 10Gbps USB 3.1G2 cable and it worked fine.

  • M4 Mac mini may have a USB-C connectivity problem

Well known (on internet) that Apple wired USB keyboards dont work on the M4 mac mini whereas 3rd party keyboards work. Easily reproducible.

  • New Mac mini arrives with redesign, powerful M4 & M4 Pro processors, more USB-C

I just hope the front USB ports arent gimped like the Studios.  Those USB ports are limited to up to 8Gbps, despite Apple's description of "up to 10Gbps" because they use only 1 PCie lane instead of the usual 2.

  • How to upgrade the SSD in your M4 Mac mini

I need to make comments here because some are not quite correct and makes it hard to restore

    1.  Which port to use to restore?   Middle port on silicon Mac mini (2024+)  :  https://support.apple.com/en-us/120694
    2. What cable to use?  USB C cables have large variations.  All this means is there is a USB C connector on the end.  So you need to read in more detail.  Apple says:  "A USB-C to USB-C cable that supports data and charging, such as the Apple USB-C Charge Cable included with some Apple products. It works with ports on Mac that accept a type USB-C connector. Don't use a Thunderbolt 3 cable".  See https://support.apple.com/en-us/108900. ;  My experience is that TB4 also doesnt work, so just avoid any thunderbolt cables.   Note that thunderbolt cables are USB C cables, so just saying use a USB C cable is wrong.  I know Apple says this early in the documentation, but in the fine print later on, it says thunderbolt 3 cables dont work.

I can tell you from experience that you must use a USB C 2, 3.0, 3.1, 3.1r2 cable plugged into the middle port.  If you dont, you will find that it may start restoring and then fail with a cryptic error message.

  • M4 Mac mini vs M2 Mac mini compared: Leaner and meaner

Just an FYI about the front USB ports. If they follow the design front USB ports on the M1 and M2 Max, they are only one channel of the PCIe 3 bus. So for the M1 and M2, they go up to 8Gbps, not 10 as apple advertises.  I hope that Apple has changed. the bus to PCIe 4, because one channel is 16Gbps.  However if the 2 ports share the same bandwidth, then it may be that each goes to 10 Gbps, but simultaneously, its only 8.  Would like someone to find out how the 2 front USB are implemented.

That's not quite correct. You can't use older active Thunderbolt 3 cables. Passive ones, USB4, and Thunderbolt 4 are fine, as are USB 3.1 and 3.2 type C cables.

Yes, your clarification is good.  Active TB3 cables dont work. The apple support document did not distinguish between active and passive TB3 cables. I just happened to pull a active TB3 cable from my drawer first and it kept on failing.  I also own passive Tb3, USB 4, TB4 and USB 3.1 and 3.2 cables in the same drawer.  Murphy's laws...
