  • FCC fines AT&T, Verizon, Sprint and T-Mobile $200M for selling customer location data

In January, Pai said "one or more" U.S. carriers might be fined over illegal data practices after an investigation by the FCC's Enforcement Bureau found certain companies "apparently violated" federal law.

Funny, if I violated Federal Law, I’d get an all expense paid trip to the Pen for a large chunk of my life. These corporations instead just get a 0.1% of their “salary” garnished... it’s like if I made $100k last year and got fined $100 for committing a “federal offense” that allowed me to make the $100k to begin with. I’d call that a work expense (hardly, at that) and just keep doing it every year. What an F-ing joke this all has become...

  • Police, GreyShift struggle to keep iPhone unlocking tool purchases secret

So does this basically confirm that law enforcement is now able to unlock/access locked IOS devices on the latest firmware?

If so, this is no bueno….

I understand the argument for their need for access, but past behavior shows that it has been and will continue to be abused. I don’t see how LE is allowed to just go thru my device without a court order. I equate it to having my house and personal records searched without any oversight.

  • Apple Pay overtakes Starbucks for in-store mobile payments

I think Apple has in a way botched this launch. Yes it is becoming available in more areas. Yes it is my preferred method of payment. But I can’t tell you how many times I ask if a business takes ApplePay and I get the deer in the headlights stare.
Rather then ask if they support Apple Pay, I typically ask if they support “tap to pay, or mobile pay, paying with my phone, etc”.
Seems to be more widely understood, or at least that’s been my experience.

  • Ring's app caught spying on users, sharing data with third-parties

Yikes, here we go again. My parents have these and admin them on Android phones. Tried to get me some for Xmas, I took a hard pass, specifically for this reason.
I do want some security cams for my home, but won’t install until I do enough research to put together a proper closed circuit system that doesn’t rely on 3rd party cloud monitoring.
These are our homes we’re talking about, I don’t get how people just turn their privacy over so easily. I guess the convenience out weighs the risk?

  • Wallet app hints at imminent Apple Card iPhone installment plan launch

First:   Good job on a great plan getting your debt/interest payments under control.   Too many people never figure out what you figured out and then have had the discipline to stick to...

There are essentially two ways to make automatic payments:   Either have your bank send a check every month (it's how I do my monthly bills) or have the company charge your credit card --- so I doubt if they would care what kind of card it is...
    *   Well, there is a third way, have the company do an ACH transaction to pull it from your checking account.   But that way sucks for a whole lot of different reasons.  In fact, i hate that that's how Goldman insists on being paid for my Apple Card.  I almost cancelled it for that reason.
Thx for the reply, i have auto payments with my Amex card now. What I’m wondering is if I can get 3% cash back if I switch to my Apple Card, as that is what the article is about, or if it’ll just post as a typical CC charge @ 1%?
Ill txt costumer service tomorrow and see what they say, will try and update this if I can remember to!

  • Touch ID comeback for 'iPhone 12' rumors resurface

I can’t think of a single time when Apple sources a security technology that was already being used in another vendors phone. So seriously have my doubts about this one.
I could see apple designing their own version of under the screen finger print reader, that will have to be magnitudes better than anything anyone else has, otherwise they’ll just stick with Faceid.
I do think the rumor on the smaller notch may have some validity.

  • Microsoft embraces Mixed Reality future with Microsoft Mesh

If they support AutoCad and Revit/Bim software output, with seamless, intuitive integration to CAD/BIM software suites, this would be incredibly valuable to me.
I’ve been toying (with varying degrees of success), with using InsiteVR but it’s too time consuming to be a marketable & profitable service.
I would love to send a Dropbox link or whatever to a client, and a cheap cardboard headset that they can slip their smart phone into, and have an immersive walk thru of the designed spaces. Doesn’t need to be super fancy, just needs to function easily as most people aren’t tech savvy enough to make something like this work without too much hassle.

That would be a huge game changer/money maker for me.

Unfortunately I don’t see being able to send clients stand alone & proprietary headsets or have them purchase outright considering they’ll likely never use them again. Unless I ask for them in return, which sounds impractical to me.

Anyways, any progress & competition in this field is good for all.
