  • 2016 MacBook Pro butterfly keyboards failing twice as frequently as older models

    On my late 2016 MacBook Pro the z key stopped working reliably recently. Fortunately, I have AppleCare on the computer, so I made an Apple Genius appointment (took about three days). I was told that the keyboard would have to be replaced and it would take 3-5 days. Since it's my work computer, I asked if there was any other option and I was told no, that they have to send them all out for repairs. On one hand, the turn around was exceptional. I left my computer with Apple around 4 pm on a Monday and got it back around 9 am on Wednesday by Fedex Priority. But, on the other hand, if I did not have AppleCare, the price to replace the keyboard would have been $100 labor, $695 parts, plus tax or $854.63 total which makes AppleCare look like a bargain. I never used to purchase AppleCare on my Apple products because they were so reliable, but that is no longer the case.

  • Editorial: Are Apple's incremental iOS 13 & macOS Catalina updates enough?

    It seems that the system software innovations that Apple delights in, as of late, are new emoji's, messaging effects, dark mode, and other fluff. Instead, I'd like to see them making improvements in, what I feel are, more practical and useful applications like Apple Mail, Notes, Contacts, and Calendar.

    (cough) The answer to that may end up being: not much.

    Do some research into the history of the company now known as Serif (and the company it was prior to being known as "Serif"). They have a some curious habits in terms of how they treat their users and their long-term commitment to their products. 

    I mean, use the software if it does what you need it to—They're fine products. Just don't expect much beyond what they are right now. 

    I have read that many Serif users were upset with their abandonment of their old products. Judging by your comments, I'm guessing that you are one of them or have had other negative experiences with Serif in the past before they became Affinity, and I'm sorry about that. But, you could have said, "Just don't expect much beyond what they are right now" after they released Designer and then after they released Photo (I don't recall which was first) and look where we are now.

    Perhaps the leadership at Affinity has learned lessons and grown from their experiences in the past to not repeat those mistakes...the marketplace has changed dramatically over that time. Perhaps, their ownership/leadership has changed. I know I have changed and matured over the years.

    I'm happy with the quality of the Award winning products Affinity has produced, the bargain prices, and the support I've received for Designer, Photo, and now Publisher. I'm judging them on my experiences and the quality of their software.

    That said, I can certainly relate to not trusting/supporting a company because of their previous actions: Adobe and their decision to rent software and Quark's lack of customer service and long delays in updating their software.

    I can only hope that you are wrong and just experienced their worst, but time will tell.

  • Apple Fitness+ review: A physical & mental health godsend during the pandemic winter

    Can Apple Fitness+ be improved? Of course, but I think it's a great beginning. I like the production values, I like the trainers, I like the stats and tie-ins with my watch and health app, and I like the workouts that I've done. I use it consistently for running, biking, and rowing. 

    One improvement comes to mind and that is the ability to be able to fast forward through a workout. There are times when you could lose an internet connection and it would be nice to get back to where you were, and it would be great to be able to preview a class by scanning through it.

    I like the smiling, friendly, and encouraging instructors, but when they add comments between the trainers like what are your goals or what are some of your favorite memories, once you've done the workout a few times that gets old. How many times do you need to hear Sam say that her goal is to be the best she can be? So, that sort of thing makes the class more dated.

    But, overall, I think Apple Fitness+ is a great value for what it is and I look forward to seeing the app evolve. Meanwhile, through my use of it, I've toned up and lost a few COVID pounds.

    I believe Laurene is a capable, intelligent, and caring person. Steve’s work benefited us all in so many ways, both directly and indirectly. Doing so, brought him and his family incredible wealth which both he and his wife want to give back to society. I see this as a positive net gain for us all as a community and don’t begrudge the fact of their enjoying some of that wealth for themselves in the meantime.

    Well, just got an email that my MBP16 was pushed back from a 11/17-24 delivery to 12/14-21, so not sure what this report is talking about shipping times shrinking!
    Me too!

    My delivery of the new 16" MacBook Pro has been pushed back from 11/12-17 to 11/26-30. :-(

    Can't wait!
