We're doing the same dance all over again now. Apple doesn't want to include hardware decoders for VP9 (despite being available this time), so they are going to continue to push x265 (which, fwiw, does have the film/television industry backing because it's MPEG group). So to directly answer the question -- they don't care about the fees. They probably have deals in place.

I could live with this feature, if a user has the choice to switch it off, but I could not detect in the article if this is possible. Luckily I still have the choice to use Chrome or Firefox

They aren't the best at properly distributing the donations they receive, but better than most and a solid default in a pinch if you want to help out. They are an extremely transparent organization at the very least. I'm closing this thread before it gets stupid. -
