New 16-inch MacBook Pro review: More power & more convenience for more money
Wow, incredible Geekbench benchmarks! My 2017 iMac Pro with a 10 core 3GHz Xeon scores 1056/9141 on GB 5.4.2 vs. these from the M1 Max of 1782/12828. That's almost a 69% increase in single core, and 40% improvement in multi-core. And that's not even a real-world app test. Perhaps I WILL get one of these and not wait for the Mac Mini version (if one is even really coming.)

New MacBook Pro chips deliver desktop performance with better power efficiency
tenthousandthings said:The last question, then, is what happens with the true desktop systems next year? I have some thoughts which I’ll post later when I have more time, but I thought I’d ask the question first…
I for one would be happy with an M1 Max Mac Mini. I already have an XDR display, and the M1 Max (maxed out) already outperforms my 2017 iMac Pro. I don't need another iMac, not a large tower machine. I guess we'll see sometime in the first quarter next year what's in store for the desktop.
