  • Apple's corporate reputation in slow decline, market research suggests

In a very charged political and social environment, often times it does not pay in the currency of popularity, to speak up and stand up for the human and civil rights causes that purely 2/5 or more of the population disagree with or do not understand as worthy pursuits.
Apple loss of position in a popularity contest is a badge of courage in this case.

  • Apple board member Al Gore sells $29.5M of company stock

In 1984 The World Watch Institute began issuing annual books called the State of the World. These science based, academic works dealt with many and assorted environmental issues, as understood at that time. The writing has been on the wall for any to observe and for leaders to contemplate and address for some time. Al Gore was an early proponent of taking action both politically, individually and as a nation. Way back then, the knuckle draggers had just enough momentum to scuttle the consideration of logical science based political decisions to course correct even while the evidence continued to mount. To the honest scientist/observer, the evidence was clear that irreversible climate change was in full ascension. Yet no one would listen.

    Some things never change.
Delusion and ignorance in national leadership is now on full display in this great nation.
    Pathetic.

Thanks Al for your effort. And thanks to Mssrs. Jobs, Cook and all dedicated to maintaining truth and progress in a devolving corporate state and degraded planet.

  • Facebook 'Trending' fights fake news on desktop & iPhone, displays trusted publisher & sum...

As mentioned in previous posts, I am a daily deep consumer of national and international news. In my pursuit of accurate information, I have used the Apple News App almost exclusively to aggregate the news I consume. Anyone using the tools provided in this app can reasonably expect to consume only accurate, researched news and current affairs coverage, if it is their intention to partake in only reputable sourced news. By limiting the news sources to established and respected services, all or most information has been adequately vetted.

if on the other hand, you tend to follow only the sources that reinforce a slanted or political view, than you are much more likely to be exposed to 'fake news'. The NYT, WP, CNN, Reuters, AP, Los Angeles Times, BBC are several of the worthy news sources, with Established and self critical news rooms and staff that I trust.

To trust many of the partisan sources beyond, those established sources mentioned above, for accurate reporting and vetting of information, especially those resources on the right, alt right and similar, is a challenge to a news consumers logic and good judgement.

Many detractors of the established news realm, Cast doubt on the reputable news sources and treat consumers minds like a piece of tough meat pounded into submission. This is happening on a institutional basis at the White House by minimizing opportunities for reputable news operations to ask pertinent questions and degrading the press corps as being fake news, both trends toward an authoritarian leadership style.

Apple realizes their responsibility, in this area, and I thank them for the Apple News App. and their work going forward.

  • Jawbone confirmed to make switch from consumer wearables to clinical health products, repo...

    Notsofast said:
I wonder how much the "election" of tRump influenced this?   He has promised to gut any and all regulations -- particularly those related to restrictions on health care innovation.
    .
For medical devices there are 3 main restrictions:
    1)  Health care professionals and organizations who have nothing but contempt for any and all consumer grade equipment.
    2)  Insurers only care about money.   "Will this increase or decrease my bottom line"  (It has little to do with "peer reviewed" anything)
    3)  Government (FDA) regulations and approvals trump the first two.

But, with tRump promising to gut the regulatory environment, he could open up the market for consumer grade wearables to quickly become medically approved devices.   But, both medical providers and insurers will still have the final say.

Please watch the politics so this site doesn't go off the edge like so many other places.  And if you do, please don't spread that fake news.  You have an interesting point, but it gets lost when you make up an absurd statement like, " the President wants to "gut any and all" regulations."  He, along with most of his party, and many Democrats at the federal, state and local level, have pledge to eliminate unnecessary regulations that are hurting small and large businesses, stifling innovation or job creation while still preserving the many important ones that protect the environment, consumer safety, etc.   As far as health, the pledge to remove unnecessary regulations to move life saving drugs to market is welcome by many who otherwise will suffer or die, and reducing unneeded costs will make treatments more affordable, again a benefit for all, but mostly for those with less means.

One very quick example from the state level  is that yesterday the great state of South Dakota eliminated the silly, absurdly expensive and time consuming and completely useless requirement that you had to obtain a license before you could braid hair which impacted many people, but especially small businesses, lower income people ,and minorities.

From Forbes --"Previously, braiders faced the toughest law in the nation. Before anyone could work twisting or braiding hair, they first had to obtain a cosmetology license. That license requires at least 2,100 hours of training, which can cost nearly $15,000 in tuition. Meanwhile, braiding without a permission slip from the government could lead to fines and even jail time. Adding to the absurdity, many cosmetology schools don’t even teach African-style braiding techniques, and those that do dedicate almost no time to the subject.

The South Dakota braiding lobby will be happy to know that the leadership of SD has their back. LMAO! While native rights, environmental and citizens needs are being neglected by that same South Dakota government.

It would be nice if all citizens were more certain of the skills, ethics and good governance of our national leadership. But for many elected and business officials, the opposite opinion holds true. Until a time when this becomes clear, it behooves those of us who do care about such things to speak out and challenge the more outrageous policies and other disfunctional plans intended to be foisted on us all.

Nosofast, you pick your battles and I will pick mine. Braiding laws, while antiquated in SD, don't rise to the level of climate change, constitutional freedoms, immigration policy, and a hundred other very important issues currently in limbo, under the new leadership.

Mr. Trump said that for every new regulation, two will be removed. This plan, now passed in Congress, is as absurd or more so than what you found fault with in the previous commenters general point.

If my right to post to this web site do not include speaking to the current affairs of this country, then so be it!

  • Apple suppliers Foxconn, Sharp, TSMC all weigh building manufacturing plants in USA

The overarching & unspoken reason for a potential move by these suppliers is to be able to continue production as a supplier to Apple and others when the international political scene becomes untenable in the Western Pacific. China/US problems are increasing, eventually putting all shipping, manufacturing, resourcing in jeopardy in the region. These issues are a real and present crisis, which has no easy solutions. Chinese civilian and governmental good will towards Apple and US as a whole is quickly waning, fostered by AntiAmerican rhetoric, if  it was ever genuine. This could well be a long term issue, putting historical expectations out the window. Trump era taxation is a secondary rationale.
