  • Three M3 chips could land in Monday's Mac line refresh

Meteor lake is supposed to launch in December. It will be very interesting to see how the m3 lineup compares. I wonder if meteor lake comparisons are one reason Apple is launching pro and max now
I've fallen out of following Intel's releases. Is Meteor Lake suppose to come close to Apple's performance-per-watt?
I don't think anyone outside of Intel knows.  The chip launches in December but systems using this chip won't go on sale until 2024

  • Latest 'Scary Fast' leaks double down on M3 iMac and MacBook Pro launches

At first, I thought "this makes no sense" - two high end laptops that almost end up in the mobile workstation market and a consumer desktop that sells a fraction of what the consumer laptops do. The iMac is the next machine up for an update, but it pretty much shares its innards with the 13" MBP or the Mini (ignoring the M2 Pro Mini) - it just didn't get those innards updated the last time around (why?).

Then I realized that it makes sense in one specific situation... What if all three chips are ready, but supply is constrained by yield? The pro laptops have very, very high profit per machine (their percentage margin is typical of an Apple product, or even slightly low - but their high selling prices mean a lot of dollars per machine). Building an M3 Max and sticking it in a $3000-$6000 workstation is a lot more profit per chip than selling a base M3 in an iPad or a MacBook Air. The M3 Max is also larger, and I don't know how profit per wafer compares...

The iMac is old, and it has been attracting attention in the Mac press for how old it is, so it's a good machine to update just for the PR. Why not update its innards-mates with it? If there are supply constraints, it shares its innards with the most popular Macs of them all...

If Apple updated the Airs, it's possible that the limited chip supply would simply shoot availability dates into March right away. Update the slower-selling iMac and people might actually get one in a reasonable time frame. Update the 14" and 16" Pro and you've made some very visible creative users happy, and sold a bunch of high profit machines
I generally agree with what you say with one caveat =>  releasing an M3 iMac now and not in the MBA / Mac mini could negatively impact (potentially) sales of the latter products for the holiday season in a big way.  I would like to see:

    M3 iMac
    M3 Pro / Max MBP

What I think we will see:

    M2 / M2 Pro (?) iMac
    M3 Pro / Max MBP

  • Apple promises 'scary fast' Mac announcement the night of October 30

    M3, Here we go!!
No way is the M3 being announced at this event.  Apple is the king of marketing and introducing a major processor change will not occur with a web evening event.  I expect an 24” iMac with an M2 and maybe an M2Pro as an option.   Be even better if they also introduced a new 27” iMac.
Like yourself, I'm expecting an M2 / M2 Pro 24" iMac  but also M3 Pro / M3 Max MBP models.  Full Stop.  No base model M3.

  • Apple allegedly has a 12.9-inch iPad Air in the works

    Mini.  iPad.  Pro.
    $299, $349, $599 to knock-yerself-out.
    Done.
    Differentiate by size and power.
Not 1/10 of an inch difference between the 9, 10 and air... No more air.
They're in Performa-land with this now.
    I prefer:

    Good (iPad USB-C model) - $399
    Better (iPad Air) - $599 (11") / $799 (12.9")
    Best (iPad Pro) - $999 (11") / $1,199 (12.9")

  • Rumors of all iPhone 16 models having an A18 processor make no sense

This absolutely makes sense.  Seems like it's been moving this directions for a while.

The new A series in the Pro and Previous A series in the "Regular" has been a stop-gap to a Pro model and regular model of Apple Silicon.

They first did separation with the extra GPU core on the 13 Pro.

Then the put that with the extra GPU in the 14, giving it sill an improved chip, and the new A16 in the 14 Pro.

But now that A17 introduced "Pro", it makes sense to have an A18 and A18 Pro.

This evolution has already been underway.
Apple can differentiate the non-Pro and Pro versions by GPU capability and USB-C speeds
