Apple's iPhone estimated third on units, number one in revenue in China

But I agree on the why. Google took the right stand (IMO) a decade ago and decided the ultimate loss of tens of $B's in revenue was less important than moral principal. I totally get that the world is a different place 12 years on, and Google leaving didn't bring a sea-change to the Chinese governments efforts to control of its citizenry. Still sad to think that money is so terribly important than principals can be tossed aside for more of it. When Western techs roll over chasing Chinese profits it seems like this old exchange:

In a game of hypothetical questions, Beaverbrook asked the lady: ‘Would you live with a stranger (quite politely put as other sources said "sleep") if he paid you one million pounds?’ She said she would. ‘And if he paid you five pounds?’ The irate lady fumed: ‘Five pounds. What do you think I am?’ Beaverbrook replied: ‘We’ve already established that. Now we are trying to determine the degree.”
Why?
* First Google collects a lot of personal data (which is for the company’s use).
”The Journal says that, just like Facebook, Google is also profiling everyone using its services — or the web — and Google’s database contains a lot more information on both users and non-users. * Second, using that personal data, Google sells advertising to companies which can target ads to users.
“Google generates revenue primarily by selling online advertising over its sites and its network member sites.”
It's a shame we had to do the What About Google Shuffle in this thread though.
Google through its services tracks what a user buys, what they write, their searches, their destinations.
Google comes up with a summary of all that data, that the customer probably wants to buy a certain product.
(That is targeted advertising. Google is not randomly selling ad space.)
- Google connects with certain companies who fit what Google believes the customer may want to buy.
* While Google does not sell raw data, Google sells to companies a summary of the data about the preferences of the customer.
That potential buyer summary being sold is still data. -

- To me “screwing up royally” would refer to a common problem with a major product like the Pixel 2 XL having screen burn in issues. (Of course Google isn't going to be trashed by the majority of techies since Android has dominant marketshare.)

But my bringing up a few user reports would still be anecdotal evidence (the experience of a few people in a total customer base of hundreds of millions). * To look at Apple’s performance as a whole against the competition (the only fair way imo), it is better to look at surveys.

** I’m not denying that customers can have problems with Apple products. It is a fact that repair services have existed since the beginning of personal tech. - What I am saying is that overall Apple has not been screwing up royally.

Apple wants to make elegant computers. And part of that is having devices which are quiet.
This is well known, after all the first Mac (supervised by Jobs) had no fan.
With these new MacBook Pro Intel CPUs, especially the i9, Apple is faced with thermal loads which don’t fit their “quiet” design parameters.
As discussed before about the i9, Apple could give the user the option to have the fan blasting at almost all times.
In the Windows world this kind of PC/laptop is well known, sounding like a plane taking off.
