  • Man sues Apple for terminating Apple ID with $24K worth of content

Why I still buy and rip CD to lossless and am exploring open source software.   Has anyone else experienced the app store in High Sierra losing it's GUI...? Is Apple working hard to get customers on to a very short leash…?
Not only have I not experienced that the App Store in High Sierra losing its GUI, I haven't experience High Sierra in years. I had to look up to see how many versions of macOS have sense come out since that was the latest version.

Is it not possible for you to update your OS? I do see that it's now unsupported by Apple since it's so old so I doubt any problems you're experiencing are going to be resolved unless you can resolve them yourself.
Unfortunately no. I have a number of perfectly functional multi core i7 macs that were orphaned 'by design' for macOS... One of the nice things about orphaning is they mostly 'just work' in and of themselves, including the original install DVDs.

One in particular is a mac pro with Vega 56 graphics that is faster than the base current mac pro in some areas. It allows me to run metal as well as legacy software, including many 32 bit apps. One can also swap any number of drives or upgrade RAM in minutes. No T2 to fiddle with.  This works with long project cycles and clients returning after a decade or more for additional work, with a reasonable expectation to be able to access substantial sweat and financial equity in existing digital project files.

The dosdude hack may be an option with caveats, however I am fine working with an older, stable and resolved macOS, and not having to reinvent basic workflows every year, with the inevitable bugs.  I still use Snow Leopard on occasion, and have yet to find a compelling upgrade in ease of use to replace iWeb, for example.  Unfortunately Parallels hasn't proven foolproof for legacy access, especially when engaging large format imaging on older unsupported peripherals that are less 'chipped' for ink, offer replaceable wear items such as individual print heads and are arguably more efficient and sustainable to keep using until physical rather than software end of life...

  • Theoretically, you can upgrade RAM & SSD on your M1 Mac mini, but you shouldn't

...there are of course pros and cons to onboard everything, however the strategy that seems most plausible is towards hardware a consumable... This seems to be consistent with peripherals too, such as onboard battery keyboards, mice, headphones and others... I've moved back to wired everything save airplay which still seems plug and pray every time I fire up the audio system, even with Apple's own Airport Express and TC...

I am still using a 17" mbp and can order a new battery or larger SSD from OWC for a modest sum, and replace them in under an hour myself with a screwdriver and care, as I did upgrading the RAM and the original HD once SSDs became affordable...

I understand developers (how many such fanboys here?) have a vested interest in obsolescence, although I may be wrong about that...?

  • Retired leaker claims iMac with bigger screen is on the way

I hope they offer a 32” or 40” model.  If not I am going to go to the Mini with that size of display. I use my Mac for things that real estate is needed (desired) and as a movie watching device.  So 27” is the minimum and is small in comparison.  My work setup is one 32” and one 40” 4K displays and it is perfect.

I agree that having a user accessible port for ram and a hard drive would be perfect.  Maybe you have the AS unified memory and the user can offload the over burden to the user added ram instead of to the SSD?  Then the user added ssd can be a M.2 with a socketed lightning slot, so I could use it for my data files or process files so I don’t have to use up my integrated SSD so fast.  Right now I am doing the same with an external lightning 3 drive and while it works, I would love to keep the all in one aspect.
I too have a couple of 40" 4K curved displays and find them great for the pro work, also @ 110 dpi so the cinema and thunderbolt displays are size matched... The 40" also have multiple inputs and I can even run a legacy G4 powerbook to access older files at dual link resolution when needed...

  • Target iPad mini screen protector ad probably a mistake, not a leak of new details

I've long hoped for an ipad mini pro for exactly this reason...
