  • Court rules man must be given access to husband's iCloud photos

We’re talking about family so why wouldn’t each of them have written down essential account information and stored them in a safe? If they had the surviving spouse would have been able to access the deceased Apple ID.

it’s not Apple’s responsibility to do this. Forcing Apple to do it sets a bad precedent for other types of access by police and others.
On one hand that’s true, but on the other hand it used to be normal for details about one’s spouse to be readily given to the other. Less than 20 years ago one could call up businesses and get details about nearly everything and make decisions on behalf of their spouse, and that was expected and normal (and on an unrelated side note, it was equally if not more normal for women to do the same for their husbands despite the false narrative modern feminism presents). As people have stopped valuing marriage, commitment, and unity and have instead shifted in favour of autonomy and self protection (because of the few who abuse those privileges), those privileges have changed.

In any case, I also wonder why this is news.

  • Apple shares photos shot on iPhone XR

How did the Eric get the shot of the leaf with the bokeh effect? I thought the iPhone XR was limited to human subjects in portrait mode. Does Apple show pictures taken from third party apps as well?
It’s likely the natural depth of field from focussing on something closeup.

  • Reduced iPhone battery life blamed on adoption of OLED screens

Aside from what others have already stated about OLED being more efficient than equivalent resolution LCD (due to no need for constant backlighting), the author’s choice of using an iPhone X vs. Xs to make his point is also a bit silly - didn’t he know they *both* used OLED??
Which is not true, at leat in the Apple implementation of it. OLED uses more energy than LCD even during off state. This was measured in reviews and likely have something to do with PWM, where Apple doesn't want to strain your eyes.
The idea that OLED in general (Apple or not) uses less power than LCD doesn’t work out in real life. For instance, when you visit a website with a white background, like this one, OLED screens are going to use more power than an LCD. The OLED screen is only going to save power in average use when the brightness is turned down lower than the LCD.

Of course if you have more black or darker colours the OLED will do better, but that doesn’t reflect most people’s usage.

It’s totally worth it though. OLED can be nice. I’m not sure why anyone cares that they can use more power.

  • Autodesk dropping support for Alias and VRED in macOS Mojave over OpenGL deprecation

    ...
The problem is that programmers are being lazy and not even writing games for the Mac properly anyway so their opinion is about as worthless as a festering ball of dog snot. Start porting games directly for Metal instead of wrapping DirectX games for OpenGL and then we’ll take you seriously.
This is an essential point. Most developers who are serious about developing for the Mac will port to Metal. Because they care. Those developers who only do the minimal work necessary to create a version which runs on macOS don’t really have a worthwhile opinion about what’s best for the platform. Kind of like when Microsoft finally decided to create a worthwhile version of Office for the Mac, they showed they cared and their software was significantly better.

  • How to send images from the Messages app on the iPhone in iOS 12

Sorry to disagree but that looks like an improvement to me. The camera icon normally means "use the camera": that is, take a picture. Using the photos icon to mean "use one of my photos" seems more intuitive to me. I suspect that the previous operation was due to someone taking a shortcut in the design and bundling photos in with the camera. If the iOS change was in the opposite direction, I would anticipate accusations of obscurity 🤓.
I disagree. Often the images I want to send were very recently taken, so when I press the camera icon the image I want to send is right there. It’s quick and simple. Sometimes quick and simple takes precedence over ‘sensible’, when sensible means it takes more time. And it’s not like it’s a stretch to associate photos with the camera. One might say it’s a pretty reasonable association.
