  • Honey I Shrunk the Chips: How die shrinks help make processors more powerful

    Good write up!

Hopefully is pulls away the curtain a bit so people understand the Ying & Yang of chip manufacturing.

  • Honey I Shrunk the Chips: How die shrinks help make processors more powerful

One of the problems we face is knowing the true compute of a chip clock rate to compare to other CPU's that is just below the thermal threshold of the given system. So lets say the heatsink needs to stay at 95º what is the performance and then compare that to the other systems in the same way.

Trying to gage the betterment of a system is becoming harder! As an example the 2018 MacBook Pro i7 & i9 difference is so slight it did not make economic sense if you needed the full performance of the system. Whats important here is to have a scaling so people who really need the full performance a a given system have a way to know if they are getting what they are expecting.

The root cause we all know was both Intel's lack of getting to the next Node size so the heat issues within the system would be held in check with the design Apple ran with. But, its also a bit of Apples fault for not having a Plan-B ready or just passing on the chip until they could get a better cooling system built.

It would be nice to have a more objective idea of what an x-nanometer process means for Intel and TSMC.  Do we have any information on relative chip sizes for designs that Intel has partly offloaded onto TSMC, and what each called the process size?

TSMC is not producing Intel chips.

They are producing some of AMD's CPU's and chiplets which are sub units in the higher end CPU's & GPU's

  • Editorial: How AirPods and Shortcuts shifted Apple's Siri story and blunted Amazon's Alexa...

So I'm stuck using Siri Short Cuts to create cue's to play sound files I've had to prep up so I can play them on call for my 2 year old niece!

"Hey Siri what does a Dog say" >  play Bark
"Hey Siri what does a Cat say" > play Purr
"Hey Siri what does a Cow say" > play Moo
"Hey Siri what does a Horse say" > play Whine

    Or ...

"Hey Siri can you sing the song Farmer in the Dell" > Singing 'Farmer in the Dell'

This is simple stuff! That Alexa can do, Why do I have to make such an effort to build it to work with Siri?

Thinking Human is what Apple has failed to address with Siri.

Apple needs to build a home base Siri server so not everything is spilled out to the internet, basically, a
cache server. Until they educate Siri on being Human it will never get to the level we are demanding as users.

  • Apple Music option in Google Home app for iOS stirs rumors of coming support [u]

I just hope this isn't doom for Apple giving us more HomePod like devices.

I really don't want either Amazon or Google monitoring everything I say or read.
