  • Family trapped on Mt. Hood rescued via Emergency SOS via Satellite

“I’ll take white people doing white people things for $800, Alex.”
It amazes me racism is back in fashion! I thought we left that back in the 50ies.

Not sure how I feel about that Sat feature. I guess overall it is a benefit to the outdoorsy.

On the one hand, fewer darwin awards handed out; on the other hand, fewer darwin awards handed out.

People should not be encouraged to behave stupidly in the outdoors; but the death penalty is too much, I am happy the family is safe and sound. I mean yes they did something stupid but I would still rescue them, because we are humans and have compassion.
Is your viewpoint of the satellite SOS feature really that myopic that you can't see how this can benefit anyone who happens to be outside of cellular and WiFi range? There's even be reports of people who were in a car accident that couldn't get a cellular connection but could use the SOS feature.

They've even added the ability to contact AAA via the system, which would be very useful if you break down along a stretch of road without other services, which is common — even along highways — in a large part of the midwest and west between cities. There's simply not enough people in those areas to warrant  cellular access everywhere. There are call boxes occasionally but walking to them could take awhile and could cause their own dangers. Getting a ride from a stranger also has its potential perils.

But you keep on thinking  that only Darwin Award nominees would ever use the feature. 🙄

  • New macOS Sonoma 14.4 bug kills file versions in iCloud Drive

I perceive there have been more than the usually number of problems with 14.x generally.  Contrary to the past 13 years of using Mac, I've held to the previous OS (13.6.4).
I don’t know if that’s the case since every major OS and point update will cause an issue for someone, but for me Sonoma has caused biggest upset in my workflow that I can recall. For me, it’s Automator no longer being able to create working applications. I can run them effectively from the workflow in Automator and still use Apps I’ve created, but if I edit them and then export them as an application there is something broken.

Good thing I don’t know anybody who gives a shirt about that, let alone any normals.
You know you can like Apple products -and- want them to be easier for DIYers to repair and upgrade.

I found the video interesting and I'm glad that these are easier to repair.
While I agree the video is interesting, 99.999999% of Apple customers really don't give a shit one way or another if they can repair it. The vast majority will just take it somewhere to get fixed should something go wrong. It's really only some on these Mac forums that make a big stink about repairability because they think Apple should make a computer like they did back in the 90's where everything is removable. .
Even if it only 1 in 10 million — as you state — that is apparently enough to keep iFixit and many other self-repair websites with plenty of business. However, your statement is clearly hyperbole even if we use the world's population of 8.1 billion.

I happen to be a very long time customer of iFixit. I've seen them go through many, many changes. They offer their guides free of charge but then offer tools that you can buy through them or elsewhere to repair and upgrade your own equipment. This isn't just invaluable to people like me that wanted to make changes to their own equipment without going in blind in terms of tools and what to expect once inside, but ratings so I can gauge how difficult it would be do complete the desired task. The last one I did was a RAM upgrade in a Mac mini, but unfortunately I think that's the last that my aging eyes will allow me.

There are many countries and people who simply don't have the luxury of getting new tech when their old one breaks. Having how-to guides can be indispensable tools for the DIYers.

Reducing eWaste, saving money, or just having fun tinkering with used hardware should not be a threat to anyone who wants the latest iPhone so I'm always surprised by how much pushback iFixit gets on this website.

  • Apple smart ring, glasses, camera-equipped AirPods rumored in wearables push

I could see Apple coming out with several wearable devices at once in about 5 years.
